San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a tulip. Cloudy gold with a moderate, off-white head. Great fruity aroma with pronounced citrus and pine. Medium body, sticky, lightly sweet, with a nice bitter finish. Very easy to drink and quite refreshing. Among the best IPA’s I’ve had.

Pours dark golden color, clear, with on finger tan white head. Intense hop aroma with notes of citruses, especially grapefruit, lime tangerine. Flavor is very similar, very well balanced with malt flavors, which takes on biscuit, with just hint of honey. Finish is bitter and lingers in aftertaste. Body is medium, texture soft, carbonation is moderate medium.

Sculpin was very good -- somewhere between Dogfish 60 and Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. But, to be honest, I paid roughly 50% more for a 6 of Sculpin than either of those two IPAs locally here in Upstate NY and it didn’t taste 50% better to me. Unless the price drops, I would not buy Sculpin again.

clear golden colour, large, dense off-white heaad; aroma of tropical fruits (mainly mango), peach, pine resins, some lemony-grassy notes, biscuits and caramel; perfectly balanced bittersweet taste with tropical fruits, resiny notes, some peach again, biscuits and some medicine notes; just simply amazing IPA!

330ml bottle (thanks martjoobolut). Clear amber color. Small size, bubbly beige head, stays as a ring. Sweet, fruity, caramel, fruity, pine needles in aroma. Fruity, citrus, caramel, sweet in taste. Citrus, sweet and fruity in aftertaste. Drinkable brew, but not exciting.
