San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

It pours amber with an off-white head and lacing. The aroma is hops and citrus. The taste is floral hops, apricot, and grapefruit. It’s dry with a nice balance of bitterness and fruit. This is definitely a very good IPA. I think it fell a bit short of the hype. It’s definitely quality though.

Great IPA. This is how an IPA should be. Fabulous beer. Very mourish. Dorado is even better.

330ml bottle. Golden yellow colour. Medium white head. Lots of apricots, tea and citrusses in the aroma. Apricots, tea, citrusses in the taste. Citrussy, slightly sweet, apricoty finish. Apricots and bitterness in the aftertaste. Rather light bodied, very well drinkable IPA.

Not gonna lie, I find this to be very similar to their Grunion Pale Ale. But it’s a very smooth IPA - it has the characteristic bitterness from an IPA but it’s light like a Pilsner.

Great bottle. Pours with a lovely golden colour. White, medium lasting head. Nose: A very hoppy nose with lots of pine tree and citrus. Taste: Almost soft, fruity arrival with quite rich carbonation. Immediately followed by a grapefruity, long lasting bitterness. Fruity, fresh and bitter. In the exit the malt appears, with notes of nice caramel mixing into the hoppy bitterness. A very good IPA but rather on the bitter side for my taste.
