San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

This beer has a huge citrus, pine aroma. Strong hop flavor, but smooth and balanced. Had from a can while watching the NCAA basketball championship. Taste is excellent, canít really find fault with this beer. Highest rating

So yeah, I bought another CA beer. And yeah, Iím supposed to be in the middle of some sort of CA beer boycott. But when you see a top 5 IPA on tap, and the keg is purported to be fresh, you forget your convictions for a moment. At least I did. Aroma: Grapefruit and mango with a very light caramel malt backbone; the pungent quality of the aroma hops here really is nearly unparalleled in my experience. Appearance: Copper body with a thick, still tan head. Flavor: Grapefruit takes over, but does leave some light caramel; the hop profile doesnít strike me as overly dynamic, and not as impressive as the nose. The finish is moderately bitter and dries out somewhat. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Easy to see why this is highly regarded, but didnít "wow" me all around.

Sample on tap at Eureka. Pours a deep gold, with whitish head. Strong aroma of floral and grass. Tastes of hops and grass. A very distinctive IPA. Thumbs up.

Smell with orange, hop, peach, color in light yellow, orange, good amount white crown, Taste good but mild fire ipa, right texture, but I concur perfect 100 is overstatement

Bottle shared at Anchorage Apr í15 Tasting: Poured coppery orange with an off white head. Aroma was strong citrus and tropical hops. Taste was soft hops not as strong as the nose led me to believe, balanced finish.

Strong hoppy aroma and foretaste followed by a very malty taste that negates the hoppy bitterness. Some grassiness in the malt. Had a 6 pack and drank several before the review to try to understand the very high ratings but maybe just not my style of IPA. I am a hophead but am fine with well balanced IPAs too but I appreciate the initial hop bitterness but am not very crazy about the particular malt taste that follows in this beer. Certainly not a bad beer by any standard but for my taste not deserving the extremely high rankings.

Pours a hazy straw with a thick head from a tap. An excellent representative of what an IPA is or at least should be in the flooded market that exists today. Good beer.

(12 Oz. Btl) - Pours a nice wedding gown white frothy head. Strong aroma of pine resin. Body is a dark apricot color. Flavors of sour orange and apricot. Bitterness lingers on the palate. Nicely done. But, itís definately a sipping beer!

Bomber to the dome. Pours very hazy Orange with a medium to small white pillowy head. Orange is orange zest and fruity. Tate is orange marmalade and jarmy. Very quenching with a light peppery finish with slight warning in the ears. Lots of bÝÝöt in this one. Or fusels. Hips are pleasant and well done.
