San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Out of a 12oz can the beer pours a clear golden tan two finger head. Hundreds of tiny bubbles shooting up. Marvelous. Tons of fresh hops on the nose including mangos, pineapple, grapefruit, and sweet peaches. As beer warms flavors are more pronounced. Medium smooth mouthfeel. Extremely well balance between the hops and malt. Love the hop bite on the swallow. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle 355 ml, bottled on 12/13, poured into a tall tulip glass, ABV 7% Deep orange colour on the body, small white head but with good retention, minimal lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malts, cookies, tropical fruits, some mango, caramel. Hoppy taste, very bitter from the very first sip all the way to the aftertaste, lots of pine, orange peel, citrus, tropical fruits on the finish, kumquats, fresh grass. Medium body, oily on the palate and at moments dry, carbonation is good, maybe a bit higher than I wanted. Overall a really great IPA.

On tap at Pizzeria Azzurri. Clear copper pour with a thin frothy white head. Nice thick lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits, sweet malts, citrus, and pine. Oily body, light carbonation, and medium bodied. Light and refreshing. Tastes just like it smells. Tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, caramel malts, pine, citrus, and a hint of tobacco on the backend. Dry hoppy finish. Nicely balanced.

This used to be up there for my favorite IPA, but recently I have noticed a decline in quality. Less of a grapefruity character, and less vibrant. Similar to Racer 5, but just better. Maybe the quintessential West Coast IPA in my opinion. Delicious stuff.

I’m pleased to say that this beer is as good as it has been made out to be. Aromas of pineapple, mango, banana and tangerine with a bit of pine resin and caramel. Light amber with a head of fine white froth and great clarity. Very well balanced taste, a little malt sweetness coming through with a lot of hop bitterness to finish but not overwhelm. Light bodied and smooth on the palate with a long, dry finish, lively carbonation. Overall this is a fine example of an American West Coast ipa and I’d be more than happy to drink a few of these anytime.

Can. Copper pour with small head. Aroma leans towards fruity and earthy hops. Taste is fruity, earthy and grassy. Bitterness is moderate. Decent IPA which fells short from the bests of its class.

Piney, hops, citrus and sweet fruit aroma. Slightly hazy golden color with a good head. Nice IPA taste. Not to bold, heavy or bitter. Nice and well balanced body. Good beer

Hell yeah. Ballast Point’s ale tastes every bit as aggressive as a West Coast IPA should, yet it has more balance than some of its peers. The aromas and flavors meld together with pine, spruce, grapefruit, resin, and the subtle juiciness overripe tropical fruits. The balance between malts and hops is fantastic. You get just a hint of biscuit taste among the bitterness. There’s also a note of earthy, grassy sweetness. While these kinds of IPA have become extremely common, Sculpin shares the stage with a select few ales that truly embody the West Coast art of hoppy beer.

Bottle. A- Citrus, pine, pepper, hoppy. A- Copper color, clear liquid, white head. T- Bitter, pine, resin, citrus, pepper. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- A good IPA as far as IPAs go, but just wasn’t my thing. A little too upfront and sharp for my liking.
