San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

My investigation into American IPAs continues with this classic. Sure, yes, it’s obvious to anyone who can read, there’s a lot of overrating going on here. But still, what a beauty of an ipa. A workshop in taste, balance & drinkability. Offers a sucker punch of citrus hops, medium bitterness & crisp finish. Groovy hop juice for the wicked.

Good nose, caramel followed by citrus and stone fruit, I get pine forest. The taste is nicely bitter followed closely by delicate malt. Very well balanced and rounded out. Gets better as it warms up. Great beer!

Bottle. Deep go[den pour with a thin off-white head. Citrus hops, malt and a bit of pine in the taste and aroma. Really nice IPA, but, to me, it doesn’t stand out in a beer scene where there are a lot of really good IPAs.

This is a downright delicious IPA. Perfect level of hoppiness and alcoholic strength, for me at least, so as not to overpower its delicate qualities.

Just a great beer. Pours a classic IPA with generous but not too much head. Nose is sweetness - mango, maybe - and citrus. Mouthfeel is huge; a blast of resiny hops, and more sweet citrus. Clean, biting finish that makes you want more.

Draft. Pours orange-Amber with white head and lacing. Grapefruit and resiny hop aroma. Piney hood with grapefruit notes with malt in the resiny, mouthcoating finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma: citrus, grapefruit, mango, gooseberries, mango. Appearance: clear golden color and thin white head. Taste: medium citrus bitterness, nice intensive citrus notes, gooseberries, quite dry, thin malty backbone. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Great IPA, really drinkable and intensive.
