San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Clear copper gold with a thick, foamy, off-white head that lasts and laces. Aromas of pine resin, biscuit, grapefruit, light mango and peach. Flavor is pine, biscuit, grapefruit, mango, and light orange zest. Medium bodied, smooth with a dry finish. Lingering tropical fruit and pine.

Mooie koperkleur. Mooie dikke schuimkraag. Ruikt naar citroen/sinasappel/grapefruit. Bittere citrussmaak die lang blijft hangen. Heerlijk bier dat me nieuwsgierig maakt naar andere bieren van deze brouwerij.

courtesy of fiulijn - hazy reddish-orange beer with a poor head retention; solid aroma of oranges and grapefruit; full-bodied, juicy and very tasty; a solid bitterness and quite dry; long and very fruity hoppy finish (tangerines and oranges)- clean and straightforward

12 oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: Orange/copper in color. Generous white head with good retention. Impressive lacing. Pretty close to ideal. Aroma: Lots of citrus on the nose. Orange, grapefruit. Peach. Some floral notes also. Really nice. Taste: Pretty dry upfront with mild bitterness in the finish. Palate: Medium/light body. Soft mouthfeel. Longer finish. Overall: This beer has a lot going for it. The aroma is fantastic. The hops profile is pretty much ideal for me. Appearance was very nice as well. The body was a little lighter than I prefer, but I know this was by design. Overall a very nice beer.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs, lemon), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately astringent. Rated this side-by-side with the Big Eye IPA, which is also 7.0% and in the same style. The differences are significant, however...this has almost no aroma, which is strange for an American IPA, but it’s much better balanced in the mouth. Big Eye is an abrasive, astringent, crude west-coast resin bomb, whereas this is more British-styled, like a really high-ABV Bitter. It would be well enough if this was 4.0%, since it would be usable as a mindless session beer...but with all this booze and the lack of an enticing nose, it’s not really suited for either sipping or quaffing. So, pretty much the same score as Big Eye but for different reasons.

Nice complex taste with a few different levels. A fruit taste in the beginning with a finish of bitter at the end. Not to mention a nice kick.

Gold orange pour. Aroma of mango, tangerines, dank garlic herbal. Tastes grape, pine, big resin, honey, barley, orange, tangerine, peach. Long bitter finish of apricots and minerals.

Maybe my palate is numb due to so many high alcohol IPAs but I did not feel this beer had the sting that it describes. Lacking the sting does not take away from the balanced smooth drinking IPA that the beer is. I didn’t find there to be any dominating or overwhelming flavors but I did find that the first sip was just as good as the last. As I move away from the double and triple IPAs, this beer will definitely be added to my rotation.

Poured from a can into a snifter. Pours a cloudy orange/amber with a small white head. Aroma consists of pine, resin, peach, mango, and tangerine. Taste is much the same with a nice and balanced malt backbone that does not take away from the hop flavors. It has a very nice dry bitterness on the end. Medium bodied brew with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. Amazing.

Poured a pretty clear light orange with good lacing. Very balanced in the mouth with decent malt to hold back the hops.
