COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz bomber. The pour is a darker orange-ish gold with a thin white head and some great lace as it falls to a soapy film. The aroma is just great. There is a lot of tropical fruits and a malty hop presence. The pineapple and tangerine really pop through, but it's not overly done. The maltiness is a little surprising here. The flavor is much more malt forward than I was expecting. The fruits and hoppiness are really relaxed, letting the malts control it. There is a light bitterness on the back end. The mouth feel is really good. The carbonation is a little light, so it does fall off of the palate pretty quick. The aftertaste is really malty and dank, not really bright and hoppy as I would like to see. Not bad by any means, but it could be better, for sure ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drank ice cold from a bottle. Great hoppy citrus aroma. Fruity light flavour with a generous dose of hops. Really nice and refreshing.

First I noticed the awesome head this beer gets on the pour. Then the awesome fruity/citrusy aroma. And the clarity of this beer blew me away as it was crystal clear. First taste I noticed the tangerine/orange hints then on the swallow moved to the grapefruit pine bite finish LOVE this beer. Great American IPA and first beer for me from this Brewery.

Fruity aroma with tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, and some pine resin. Bitter flavor with lemon, orange, and a little bready malt. Bittersweet finish. A fine, well-balanced IPA.

Not your average IPA with loads of mango, apricots and peaches on the nose. Taste is not as sweet as aroma, instead subduing the fruits and the pines creating a mild yet distinctly bitter beverage. Different.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2015 From BandC. OK so this was really good at what it was. Quite hoppy but balanced and knew when to easy off so that it wasn’t a hop lozenge. Serving: Can

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2015 The aroma is grapefruit, orange, orange peel, a bit of lawn, some resin, and a malty background of bread and caramel. The mouthfeel is medium, with a smooth body of medium viscosity and soft carbonation that wakes up when you press it against your palate. The taste is medium bitter, with some fruity and malty sweetness rounding it out. Swallow, and orange zest lingers under your palate. There is also an aftertaste of malt loaf and resiny hops. Very, very pleasant, but not as bright and fruity as I thought it would be. I probably need a fresher bottle.

It’s hard to imagine a more prototypical west coast IPA than this one. Chock full of citrus and stinky sock nose, and caramel-bread malt nose. Flavor spicy with resinous and citrus hops, malts still come through with a light breadiness, semi-sweet at the finish. Utterly drinkable, it magically disappeared from the glass. Pure gold color, modest head.

One of my favorite IPAs. Bursting with fresh hop aroma. Crisp, clear and a wonderful finish.
