San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. 7.0%. Best before 08.07.16. Pours a hazy orange with a lasting, yellowish head. Decent lacing. Grape fruit and pine hop aroma, a bit fat, and with a slightly dusty/dry overtone, bordering cardboard. Light cheesy/old hops note as it warms. Sweetish, bitter and fat flavour. Pine hops, and a wee bit juicy. Rather bitter finish with an alcohol burn, lingering, along with a light green apple note. Soft palate. Overall good, though not as good as I had expected/hoped for, and less complex but a fresher example might prove better. 04.02.16.

Great CA IPA on the nose, and one of the go to classics. Lots of citrus and pine. Taste imparts a little bit more tropical flavor which makes sense why the adjuncts of this have been grapefruit and pineapple. Whichever way you want to lean away from the base you can and both are excellent as well.

Aroma: fruity, very faint hops; Appearance: straw colored, clear with thin head and some lacing; Taste: acceptable but not much personality; not particularly bitter; not complex; Palate: finish a bit better - long, dry, more bitter; Overall: okay. Would drink if available but not seek out.

Bottle at Piccadilly, Bod. Has a slightly hazy orange color with a creamy off-white head. Fruity aroma of peaches, pine, orange peel, grapefruit and dry hay. More grapefruit in the flavor along with peaches, grassy hops, pine and citrus. Has a slick mouth feel, medium body and a balanced bitterness. A fruity and nice IPA.

Pours orange amber with thin head. Light lacing. Aroma of citrus and resinous hops balanced with apricot and malt. Flavor starts off a little sweet with flavors of peaches, lemon and oranges and progresses in to a long dry finish. Body is a bit thin but does not take much away from experience. Oily texture. Moderate carbonation. Really tasty but would do well with a bit more weight.

335 ml. bottle from Systembolaget, poured in to a Tulip. Hazy, amber-golden colour with a creamy off-white head. Fruity aroma with grapefruit, grasses, sweet, tropical fruits and caramel malts. A toasted note. Taste is bitter. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and bitter with citrus fruits and toasted notes. In essence a typical westcoast IPA.

Can. Just yum. Smells awesome, tastes awesome. Wonderful pithy bitterness, subtle honey sweetness, tidy balance. Feels properly put together and delivers on all the tasting note promises. Those 7 abvs go unnoticed. Im off to enjoy the rest of it.

Lots of licorice in the aroma. Fresh. Thick, oily mouth-feel. Distinctive bitterness that remains in the mouth for a very long time. Reminds me a lot of Ballast Point Fathom, I probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the two in a blind test. Good stuff nonetheless.

Nice ipa, kinda cheapened by the massive buyout. That doesnt take away from the fact that this is a great beer. Juicy and delicious. Will get again.
