San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours clear golden with clean billowing head. It dissipates gradually. Fairly thick lacing. Burgeoning juicy aroma. Exactly how I need my IPA’s. Fresh apricot, grapefruit, with a hint of lemon and floral pangs. A little dash of pine emerges as it warms. Beautiful. Taste is more apricot, a touch of citrus and some soft caramel malt. Grapefruit-rind bitterness creeps forward and punctuates the moreish medium-bitter finish. My only small qualm is the palate. It feels slightly diluted. Perhaps carbonation needs better integration. My preference is for more creamy IPA’s but the filp-side is this mouth-feel suits a more refreshing feel. Supreme drinkability nevertheless. A quality, juicy IPA. Really enjoyed it.

Smell: Ruby Red Grapefruit, orange, citrus rind, and a touch of pine. Hints of tropical fruit. Pineapple makes a big appearance as it warms. Just a slight touch of booze. Very inviting. Taste: Lots of sweet grapefruit up front, but remains present throughout. Wave of hop bitterness and big pine comes next, with a finish that reminds me of biting into bitter grapefruit rind. Oily bitterness and dryness lingers afterward.

Bottled. Brightn pale amber color, creamy and lacy head. Very fresh and fruity nose. Sweet mango, cataloupe, lemon zest and floeal notes. Dry, pale malt character has minor caramel notes and just a touch of biscuity toast. Crisp, grapefruity bitterness is intese and smooth at the same time. Lingering, slightly resinous but more graperfuity aftertaste. Smooth texture and medium body. Amazingly good IPA. Smooth and intense, dangeroysly drinkable. If it so good after bottling shipping all the way to Finland, how close to perfect it would be in San Diego?

I’ve had probably over 100 IPAs and this is by far one of my favorites. Wish I could find it sold in more locations
