San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Amazing flavor and aroma, dominated by citrus but with a lot of depth. A little fruit sweetness that balances the bitterness nicely. Not quite a DIPA, but a strong IPA - this level of ABV & IBUís really allows you to savor each flavor without anything being too overwhelming.

UPDATED: OCT 8, 2014 Typical West Coast IPA with stable, coarse, off-white head and deep orange blonde colour, clear. Strong and resinous hops in the nose, tonic water, grapefruit peel, spices, bitter honey, orange zest, thyme, gin, white pepper, apple peel. Fresh citrussy onset with elegant and appetizing fruitiness, some apricot, minerals, slick and clean mouthfeel, with a very powerful, spicy, grapefruity, leafy hop bitterness drying the mouth and making for a very long and dry, complex finish without becoming too agressive. One of the best balanced IPAs I had so far, very memorable.

From 355 ml in a tulip glass. Pour is clear orange with a frothy thick white head. Lots of floral and herbal hops in the nose. Tropical fruits dominate with passion fruit, lemon and grapefruit notes. Light bread notes. Taste is lots of fruit flavours with a medium but long lasting bitterness. Hints of bubblegum and very light malt sweetness. Pretty light body for an IPA! Well balanced! Great representation of an West Coast IPA, but not my favourite.

Ballast Point Sculpin is listed by many as a great beer. I am often times leery of mass approval of anything, with that in mind I gave this IPA a try. it was poured into a pint glass and did have a very pleasing light color for an IPA. The aroma was strong but not overpowering and when I took the first sip, I realized many voters are just towing the party line. I like IPAs but I get the since many of these brews are made the "drier" the better and to me that takes away from savoring the flavor. I would drink it again but I donít consider this a fantastic brew. I prefer Ballast Pointís Wahoo White which I consider to be an excellent brew. But for the craft beer aficionado this beer would be well worth a sample beer or two to see if it is your cup of tea (so to speak)

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2014 The aroma is tangy with lots of fruit, like grapefruit and banana. The taste is sweet and strong with hops. Very well balanced West coast IPA.

Poured from tap into Chimay glass a nice amber with white head and lace. Aroma was grapefruit and a bit floral. Taste to me was a better balance between the hops and malt. It was grapefruit not doubt but not a bomb. Med body. Really liked this one, a winner for sure.

71 day old 12oz bottle to snifter. Crystal clear copper. White head. I wonder how fresh it needs to be to live up to the hype. Still good.

From a bottle. Pours orange with a thin white head, floral hop aroma, huge palate of hops with grapefruit punch that lingers. No hint of the alcohol, a great beer that is an excellent example of an American IPA.
