San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

With Larry. Pours paler than typical IPA...almost a cross between between a typical IPA and a pilsener. Great nose -floral, pine, citrus. Taste has citrus and caramel malts up front - but a muted hop finish. Great except the finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rating from a 6-pack enjoyed this week, less than a month old per bottle date. Sculpin was one of my first favorite IPAs and I had forgotten just how good it can be. When you find it fresh it is a monster. Juicy and pungent with powerful hop flavor and wonderful balance. When itís been sitting on the shelf a while, it loses some luster.

Check the bottle dates, explained on their website. If itís fresh, buy it.

Com um aroma satisfatório, bem lupulada. Espuma nao se mantém por muito tempo, amargor bom mas poderia ser mais presente em toda degustação. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Great everyday (and hig quality) drinking. Lovely balanced IPA with spicy hops, some resin, good length; everything just seems to fall into place. A little fruit early but does dry out a touch. Terribly sensible beer but very appealing.

Pours clear golden with clean billowing head. It dissipates gradually. Fairly thick lacing. Burgeoning juicy aroma. Exactly how I need my IPAís. Fresh apricot, grapefruit, with a hint of lemon and floral pangs. A little dash of pine emerges as it warms. Beautiful. Taste is more apricot, a touch of citrus and some soft caramel malt. Grapefruit-rind bitterness creeps forward and punctuates the moreish medium-bitter finish. My only small qualm is the palate. It feels slightly diluted. Perhaps carbonation needs better integration. My preference is for more creamy IPAís but the filp-side is this mouth-feel suits a more refreshing feel. Supreme drinkability nevertheless. A quality, juicy IPA. Really enjoyed it.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber, golden yellow hues when backlit. Lasting wispy head with lacing. Solid full flavor with dry, bitter finish. From notes 2/15/10.
