COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Tasted from 650ml bottle. Tending towards the tropical fruit end of the spectrum. Nothing immediately jumps out because this beer is incredibly balanced. Great length on the palate, This beer is really hard to pick individual flavours because it is so intertwined. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

Pretty darn good. Very earthy dank and bitter. Good amount of pine. Not really citrus tasting. So darn fresh and tasty. Big down side, too darn expensive. The price is reflected in the Overall category. I usually wouldn’t let something like that reflect my rating, but $16 a six pack is too much money. Easily could be a 4.5 out of 5 if the price were closed to $10 a six pack.

Bottle 12 oz...one of my top three...greatest hop aroma of mango grapefruit and pine. Favor is as crisp and clean as you can with fantastic hop flavor and dry clean crystal clear greatness.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. This is a very well balanced IPA. Citrus with not a lot of aftertaste.

From 12 oz. Bottle. Small head lots of carbonation from bottom. Aroma of pine apricot. Pretty dry and a bitter aftertaste. A bit too bitter for my taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled on draught at a bar in Las Vegas. Light orange/yellow colour with a white head. Aromas of fruit, and a flavour of apricots, oranges and lemons. There is also a very dry, almost astringent taste of grapefruity hops. A nicely bitter, well-made IPA in the American style.

Now THAT IS a good IPA! Beer in the glass is magnificent: orange/golden colour, lot of carbonation coming from the bottom of the glass, nice thick white head on the top of the beer. Head disappeared quite rapidly though. Aromas of pine, citrus and mango. The mouthfeel is warm, and the mouth gets filled with this incredible hoppy flavour as the beer gets down the throat. The after taste lasts for hours and is really evolutive. Splendid!

From a 650ml bottle on 27/1/2015. Pours a slightly cloudy golden with a big fine white head. Have been waiting to try this for ages, as their Big Eye IPA is both a regular and a big fave of mine. The aroma is exquisite, with lots of caramel malt and fruity, piney hops. In the mouth, there’s a big caramel malt backbone with some toffee, masses of tropical, stone fruit and citrus fruit (mango, peach, apricot, mandarin, grapefruit), marmalade, and big dry resiny hops. The palate is a little syrupy with average carbonation. This is a truly wonderful IPA which is difficult to fault. To me, it’s only subtly different to Big Eye - a little sweeter, smoother and ever so slightly less aggressive. Perhaps a touch more enjoyable, but only just.

33cl bottle from saveur-biere.com. Gold to orange color. Thin white head. Taste is high bitter, light sweet. Aroma is piney, orange, hop, wood, light malt, spicy. Nice!
