San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Purchased in a bomber from a Las Vegas convenient store. I was super stoked. Also had on tap at Public House in the Venetian. (Notes from the bomber though) Appearance: hazy golden orange with sticky, heavy lacing. Off-white head. Aroma of citrus and pine hops. Super resiney bitterness, smooth, well balanced with malt. Complex hops with grapefruit and citrus. This beer is absolutely fantastic.

From a 650ml bottle on 27/1/2015. Pours a slightly cloudy golden with a big fine white head. Have been waiting to try this for ages, as their Big Eye IPA is both a regular and a big fave of mine. The aroma is exquisite, with lots of caramel malt and fruity, piney hops. In the mouth, thereís a big caramel malt backbone with some toffee, masses of tropical, stone fruit and citrus fruit (mango, peach, apricot, mandarin, grapefruit), marmalade, and big dry resiny hops. The palate is a little syrupy with average carbonation. This is a truly wonderful IPA which is difficult to fault. To me, itís only subtly different to Big Eye - a little sweeter, smoother and ever so slightly less aggressive. Perhaps a touch more enjoyable, but only just.

On draft. Copper color with one finger head. Citrus aroma. Very citrus taste, a little earthy. Exactly what I like in an IPA.

One of the first beers I tried after arriving in California, on tap at the black cat in Silverlake. A pleasure.

Pours a handsome golden color with a slight orange hue. Limited head. Beautiful citrus smells. Floral scents and fresh grass also come through. Crisp hop flavors include grapefruit and pine. Extremely drinkable, very refreshing. Me gusto mucho.

Quite possibly the best IPA I've ever tasted (haven't tried Pliny or Heady Topper though). Nevertheless it's just a damn fine IPA. Very smooth, not bitter, yet has all the citrusy, piney, hoppy flavor that you love from an IPA. Great mouthfeel. Aroma is citrus. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

650ml bottle from cellarbrations super store in hami hill. Pours golden with a thick white head leaving some nice lacing. Aroma is subtle with hints of lemon citrus, apricot and perhaps a touch of mango. Body is quite light with a medium to low carbonation. Taste is lovely with lots of citrus characters with a subtle dry bitter finish. Such an approachable IPA. Smooth and crisp and just Awesome !

The smell was superb, one of the finest Iíve felt. Very fruity (9/10). The appearance is a flat yellow. Nothing special (3/5). The taste is very light, maybe too light for me (7/10). Palate leaves a hoppy & fruity ending (4/5). Overally an excellent beer, but for being honest, I expected more. Iíve tried better from Ballast Point (16/20)
