San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2013 Appearance: not much head at all, but it has a nice bright orange-gold appearance, and the little head it does have leaves good lacing. Aroma - lots of orange and grapefruit citrus, some pineapple, and lots of sweet caramel malts. Flavor - mmmm! Nice grapefruit and orange profile with a solid malt backing and some hops at the end. Very well-balanced. I was expecting something a little heavier and sweeter from the aroma, but this isn’t a sugar-bomb at all. This is really easy to drink, yet full of flavor - doesn’t whack you over the head with hops, but they are there. What a refreshing IPA. This would be even better in the summer. The more I taste, the yummier it gets - lovely citrus at first, and then the subtlest of hops and malt to complete it. Nomnom. The taste and palate of this are just perfect! Enjoyed slightly beyond the "best by" date - wonder how this would be fresh? JUNE 2013 UPDATE: Now enjoying this on a hot summer day. Every bit as good as the first one I had late last year. It’s fresh, but it smells and tastes the same as I remember my slightly expired one did. If this beer had a slightly more impressive appearance and more floral, balanced aroma, it’d easily rank as the top overall single IPA in my book. As it is, the palate and taste are definitely #1 for me, and that’s what matters most, IMO.

Pours a nice golden amber with little lacing. The nose is strong with floral and citrus. Grapefruit and mango definately mango and a little orange peel. The hops lingers forever, I love this beer.

Burk på bishop. Brunröd med mycket vitt skum. Kryddig humledoft. Lätt metallisk smak med lite fruktighet som försvinner fort.

On tap. Pours a medium gold with a white head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of citrus, pine, and grass, and the same notes are in the flavor followed by a bitter middle and bitter, slightly sweet aftertaste over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Nose is bright summery; peach, mango, lychee, sweet floral note. Taste is citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit, spruce, onion, very light resin the bitterness comes from the emerging grapefruit rind. A little to fizzy for me. It’s a class leading American IPA.

Bomber. Appearance is a light golden bronze color with a cap of off-white foam and bubbles. Lots of pine resin, tropical fruit, grapefruit and lemon in the aroma. The taste starts with a potent dose of tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit rind along with some pine, hops resin and toasted malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a clean, bitter citrus finish. Overall, a fantastic West Coast style IPA with just enough balance and complexity.

Bottle poured into a Sam Adams pint glass produced a finger worth of white head that laced out wonderfully. The body of the brew was a clear copper in color I got huge aromas of citrus fruits and flowery grasses coming off the nose of this one. It was really a pleasant aroma not harsh like some IPA’s it did add a lot to the experience. The flavor defiantly was a west coast take on a IPA very hop forward. There is also enough sweetness form the malts to keep this brew from being one of those one dimensional brews. It had a light to medium feel to it with good carbonation. I enjoyed the bomber and would love to have another glass. It was worth the wait and I will continue to look for a fresh bottle in Mass if I can come across one. I have been looking for two years now with no luck, they just don’t stick around. Now I know why.

Delightful fruity/citrus aroma, with bit of cereal behind. Taste is very west coast ipa, lots of grapefruit, other fruit. Quite dry, but a little sweetness in there to start, before fading to bitter, bitter, bitter. Finish is somewhat muted.
