COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Yellow, almost straw-colored (great to see an IPA of this magnitude thatís actually a pale ale). A rather thin white head settles in a moderate pace. Massive hop aromas in the nose. Plenty of exotic fruits, but not so dominated by grapefruits as many other hop forward beers are. Instead here are generous amounts of mango and passion fruits (along with the grapefruit of course). Here is also a very pleasant smell of elder flowers. Some pine needles and hop resins. Biscuity malts are present as well. The taste replicates the smell with very fresh hop flavors all around. Exotic fruits (grapefruit, mango, passion fruit) mix with elder flowers and hop resins. A semi-sweet crisp and biscuity malty backbone. The finish is really bitter with notes of pine-needles and, citric notes and grassy hop notes. Medium to semi-full body, nice sticky mouthfeel. Crisp carbonation. This is a great IPA with a massive and very tasty hop profile. Still, it manages to stay very balanced. The malts are almost perfectly suited for the hop centered flavors. On tap at Pizzeria Azzurri. Clear copper pour with a thin frothy white head. Nice thick lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits, sweet malts, citrus, and pine. Oily body, light carbonation, and medium bodied. Light and refreshing. Tastes just like it smells. Tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, caramel malts, pine, citrus, and a hint of tobacco on the backend. Dry hoppy finish. Nicely balanced.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2014 This is like a comfortable cardigan, a bit thin in places. Draft and highly anticipated and recommend. It is something Iíd happily drink a lot of in a session. But it is safe. I was expecting something more aggressive, or peaky in the profile, and I got a very very good, easy drinking safe beer. 2nd January I had this again in a bottle. Iíve thought about this, and this really is a good beer, and to be enjoyed. I think I was harsh in my previous thinking, lumping this in íthe packí when itís one of the leaders. I gave myself an uppercut.

Bottle t h a n k s again to YaMar. Pours a clear yellow beer with a nice head. Aroma is grapefruit and pine, extremely hoppy. This compares to Hopslam. Bitter dry finish, very nice beer!

Pours a clear golden amber color with a thin white head. Super fruity aroma with lots of mango, pineapple, citrus, and apricot. Similar flavor profile--explodes with juicy fruit madness and a sharp bitter hoppy edge. Complex, but straightforward. Medium to heavier body. Slightly slick finish. Awesome stuff, itís very very easy to get used to drinking these.

Pours clear light amber with an orange hue. Not much head, no real retention. Bubbles are streaming up from the bottom of the glass. Soapy wet lace. Nose is good deep caramel malt, breaddy and it smells really smooth. Hops are fruity and tropical. Mango, hints of citrus, very floral and tea like and just a touch of pine for depth. Peaches too. The malt is really captivating me and I love malt. Taste is scrumptious. It drinks light and fruity and like iced tea. Body is supple but not biting, carbonation is ample but soft. The malt is so smooth and offers plenty of bread and a little cracker. It doesnít outshine the hops though which remain delicate as the fruit takes over the palate. Itís juicy and sweet. It isnít too oily or resinous but it has a good bitter and it itís almost dry but not quite. It has perfect balance and it isnít too sweet and the bitter isnít all there is.

This was so well done. The malt was immediate, always near at hand. The hops were civilized and cultivated in this drink. It was bold but not audacious. This was extraordinary.

Pretty much the perfect IPA, plus itís always readily available. Sturdy enough malt backbone that lets bright apricot and citrus shine.

On tap at Ballast Point. Pours clear pale yellow. Nose has lots of citrus hops, relatively strong. Flavor is solid hops, on the lemony citrus side. Very good IPA.

From the brewery to my fridge in a few days courtesy of annapolisbeer. Dank/resinous, beautiful nose. Loads of citrus, and some papaya and strawberry Ė even a little Kiwi? I could smell this for a long time. Taste is upfront a lot woodier than expected Ėsome resiny, piney hops, then the citrus returns with a really nice balancing sweetness, just enough malty character to add a touch of balance and an oily , really resinous and just slightly mouthcoating finish (yeah Ė the finish is pretty much weed in a glass). This is a world class IPA. Thanks a ton, Kevin. I may hit you up for more freshies of this one in the future.
