San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Lots of lemony grapefruit and pine in the nose. Looking for a little more malt to balance all those hop flavors. Some honey up front in the taste. however the bitterness does not over power the taste. Clean and very dry finish. Very good. There could be a couple of IPAs I like better, but this is up there.

Alla spina. Una delle migliori IPA assaggiate negli States, aroma di frutta tropicale, freschissima e intensa. Al palato ancora frutta fresca, esotica, pompelmo, kiwi e finale amaro ma non eccessivo.

Iíve been fairly impressed with the offerings from Ballast Point that Iíve been able to try so far. Itís newer to me, but good beer. The aroma is booming with fruity hop smells of peaches, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Had a nice golden tone to it with some haze. Some sweetness to start followed by a good medium bitter. If you havenít had a chance to try Ballast Point, I suggest you do.

12oz into a glass, pours a beautiful orange rose amber with sunshine ringing through. Head is fresh and bubbly, lacing is plentiful and sticky with a 2-3cm top that covers. Aroma is pine, lemon, citurs melodies, resin, and some peach vareities. Taste has a sweet mango/pineapple freshness to it that comes up first, then mixes in the nice hops that sprout all over the tounge, freshness ensues, pine, sap, grapefruit, fresh cut grass, and then somewhat bitter on the after taste. This is a wonderful ipa, brilliant, just brilliant.

On draft. Sure, this is commonly available all around the country and so ubiquitous that you donít even notice it in the grocery store anymore. But itís also a fantastic example of an American IPA. Itís got a really restrained malt profile, which makes it a clean, crisp hop showcase. Thereís a firm bitterness mixed with some fruit and pine aromatics from the hops. Classic and really good.

12 oz. bottle from Bevmo! Appearance: two fingers white head that lasts, great lacing, golden straw, clear. Aroma: grapefruit, floral, caramel, pine resin (all very strong). Palate: light body, average carbonation, bitter finish, sticky texture. Taste: nice light sweetness turning quickly into hop forward bitterness. Overall, great balance, great beer with strong tastes and aromas that compliment nicely and fit like a glove.

22 oz bottle poured into a tumbler pint glass. Best by date is 09/07/12, so this should be nice and (relatively) fresh... A: Pours a lightly cloudy golden amber color with light carbonation. The head is a nicely frothy two finger offwhite head with excellent retention and texture. Leaves a nice ring of lacing, and is a generally beautiful beer. S: Nicely tropical, with notes of mango, apricot, and passion fruit. A little bit of the malt backbone pops up here, too. Nice smelling, but not quite as boldly aromatic as I was expecting. T: Much like the nose, strong tropical fruits (mango, grapefruit rind, and apricot) open things up, and stay there throughout the flavor progression. Aside from the citric notes, this is also very piny (and almost peppery) in its hop composition, especially on the finish. The malt backbone is just there - all it does is provide a neutral canvas while giving a nice balance. I like the complexity of the hop character, but this isnít the end all be all I was expecting it to be. Itís still a good IPA, though. M: Very dry and very oily. Itís a rather coarse and prickly beer in general; a little more smoothness would be incredibly welcome. While the coarse, well carbonated character gives it nice drinkability, it means itís a little harsh going down. O: Itís a good IPA. Itís a very good IPA. But itís NOT the masterpiece I hoped it would be. I feel like itís too resinous and dry to truly belong in the elite tier. And given its price here on the East coast, I doubt Iíll revisit this again (except on tap).

Bottle. Nose is bright summery; peach, mango, lychee, sweet floral note. Taste is citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit, spruce, onion, very light resin the bitterness comes from the emerging grapefruit rind. A little to fizzy for me. Itís a class leading American IPA.

Nice fresh citrus/fruity aroma. Apricot, grapefruit flavors dominate, but all in all a extremely well balanced IPA. Very drinkable, but with plenty of character.

Cask at Blind Tiger. Poured a clearish light mahogany with a thin bubbly head. Nose is nice floral and piny hops. Mouthful is a bit on the thin side. This is a nice an easy drinker for the hop fan, and also for the non hop fan. The hop flavor is prevalent but not overpowering. There is a hint of sweetness up front, then it is full on hops with a nice and long lingering bitter finish.Very well balanced and extremely drinkable.
