COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Orange-amber pour with a two-fingered, frothy white head. Very sticky lace. Awesome hops blast up front with fresh squeezed grapefruit and pine juice. Flavors of lemon pith, ruby red grapefruit, pineapple and pine resin. A good portion of caramel malt for a complimentary backbone. Good body, nice balance with a strong, lingering, bitter finish. This brews most significant feature is its freshness. Not bad at all.

Bottle. Clear amber with a medium to thick, lasting white head. Sweet, fresh aroma of grassy hops, berries. Taste is mild sweet, medium bitter. Nicely fruity and hoppy. Has a dry finish, very drinkable. Medium bodied, well carbonated.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2013 Orange pour into snifter. Piney and orange citrus on the nose then tongue. Dry. Missing the body of an East Coast IPA, but thatís the point, right? Lovely.

2013/10/30 - Pours a translucent orange/copper colour with a soapy, off white head that laces nicely. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits and apricots. Taste is citrus and tropical hops, with mild pine notes accompanied by nicely balanced caramel malts. Mouthfeel is medium, with biting carbonation and a dry and crisp finish followed by a lingering bitterness. Top notch IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Brass Tap on Round Rock. Pours a clear deep amber with small white head that leaves some lace. Nice is pine and lemon and grapefruit with some biscuit. Excellent upfront balance of sweet malts and bitterness with a great dry finish. Medium slick body with average carbonation. This is an exceptional example of an Ipa.

A very well made west coast IPA with a clean finish. This is definitely a floral IPA with more of a citrus aroma than pine cone, similar to a better tasting Bridgeport IPA. However, the palate is a little empty leading a finish that leaves you wanting for something more. This makes for a good sessionable IPA although the ABV is a little high (and the ABV is masked very well!). While not an epic beer, I would definitely recommend this beer for casual drinking or a sample if you havenít had it before.

Pours a light nearly transparent gold. A thin head retains well as the beer is drunk. The hop flavor is pronounced citrus and is crisp and refreshing for an IPA. Overall I think the beer is a tad overrated, but is none the less a strong example of the category.

Really nice aroma, heavy in both grape, passion fruit and mango
Nice clear straw colour and great head.
The taste is nice, you can notice that some maltiness is there but it is only in the background and just enough to carry the hops. Just as the maltiness in an IPA should be. The bitterness is nice and pretty round and smooth.
The body is light to medium, the carbination average and the finish is pretty long with the nice bitterness from the taste. The palate is okey but I prefer my IPAs lighter and more carbonated.
It is a relly nice IPA. It would be interesting to try this in USA to get it really fresh, ícause even if it is good it still has nothing on some locally produced IPAs we get fresh here in sweden

Pours golden yellow with white head which settles quickly to the rim. Aroma is honey, citrus and piney hops. Taste is a nicely balanced with initial brief sweetness followed by floral piney hops. Crisp and light mouthfeel however left a little bit of pill bitterness in the finish - par for west coast ipaís though. Nice IPA.
