San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Pours an amber color with white head. Aroma is tons of citrus (grapefruit) and a bit of hops. Taste follows the nose. Grapefruit and a bit of bittering hops.

On tap at Duke’s, Malibu. Hot damn, this is a nice beer. Great aroma kicking my nose, nice great balance with malt. Alcohol is well hidden. I slurped two of these down in a hurry and would have had more but I was driving. Yummm0.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2014 A hazy orange beer with a small off-white head. The aroma is bready malt, tropical fruit, and floral. The flavor is grapefruit, citrus peel, and earthy.

This was recommended to me by the bartender at Naja’s on Redendo Pier. What a fantastic IPA. One of the best I’ve ever had. Tons of hop flavor, well balanced with malts. Great palate. I’ll take 10 more please.

Pours gold with a thick white head. Aroma is pine and exotic tropical fruits. Taste is a mellow blend of pine, mango, and light malts. The hop resins linger in the aftertaste. Pleasant IPA & good session beer.

Pours clear copper with a big puffy beige head, very good lacing, excellent retention. Aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral notes, bread, grass. Medium body, creamy. Lightly sweet, a hint of citrus, full bitter finish, but not over-the-top. Nice fruity-hop IPA.

Slight grapefruit notes. A very good IPA. Pretty much a hop bomb, but drinkable.

Orange, amber color..not very aggressive pour..into snifter leaving 1/2 finger head..what carbonation..great action that rises to the top in somewhat even rows..aroma of orange, mango, citrus dominant, quite juicy on the nose..hop juice..palate is very smooth and grapefruit heavy..almost like the bubble action is continually pushing up more waves and layers of hoppy ipa goodness...this is extremely drinkable and fresh.Solid dry finish..bitterness is spot on...glad that this is now available in MD..can see why this is one of the finest west coast ipa’s..everything is so well done here hard to find any real flaws..

Bomber shared with and thanks to Axilla. Poured slightly cloudy orangish in color with a nice off white sticky head that left great lacing on the glass. Aroma is very piney and floral with a nice sweetness to back it up. Tastes of sweet american hops, grapefruit, piney, resin, with a nice caramel malt backbone. Very fantastic and drinkable IPA.

Poured from a bottle into dogfish ipa glass. Golden orange clean appearance with a hearty white head. Smells very heavy on pine with citrus overtones. Fruit is in the background too, apricot I think? Bitter front that gets a bit malty, then more fruit and citrus, mostly grapefruit, into a bitter finish. Nice, crisp, refreshing, balanced.
