San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap at the Brass Tap on Round Rock. Pours a clear deep amber with small white head that leaves some lace. Nice is pine and lemon and grapefruit with some biscuit. Excellent upfront balance of sweet malts and bitterness with a great dry finish. Medium slick body with average carbonation. This is an exceptional example of an Ipa.

Cask at Get Real NY. Dry hopped with Fuggles. Very nice fruity aroma, lots of citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit. Taste is hoppy, pine and fruit, but very smooth. Light bitterness on the finish. Very fruity, flavorful, smooth, complex, amazing IPA. Need to try this again, and soon. One of the few beers at Get Real that really stood out.

Bottle. Pours an unclear orange with an average, off-white head. Aromas of light malts, caramel, and lots of hops (pine, orange, grapefruit, peach). Flavor is slightly sweet with a strong hop flavor. Hop notes of grapefruit, pine and other sweet fruits nicely balanced by some moderate malts.

Bottle. Translucent golden pour. Half inch head. Aroma of pine and sweet malts. Tastes sweet up front with a bitter hop finish. Not as hoppy as I expected. Soft mouthfeel.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2015 This is a great IPA! Bitter but still fruity. Great with spicy salsa. Refreshing. Apricot and grapefruit hoppy taste. Dry, but still quenching. Must try!

Appearance was amber gold with diminishing whitish creamy 1 finger head, spotty lacing.Aromas where sweet honey malt with grapefriut, lemons, oranges and spices. Taste was sweet figs, honey sweet malty backbone with melony citrus lemony hops comes through in the back. Palate was smooth creamy carbonation with beautiful medium balance of sweetness and hops. Wonderful IPA...

Pours a very clear, coppery-amber color, with a decent, stable head. Smells of biscuity malts, with a hoppiness featuring a grassy dankness as well as an orange ripeness. While the hops are beautifully well pronounced on the nose, they blend well into the malts with a note of lemon zest standing out from that mixture. Drinks outstandingly soft, with a well integrated aqueous note, perfectly covered by pungent hops, creating a fantastic refreshment. Begins with bready malts, together with a short appearing coppery note, integrated into the overall taste by sun-bathed, sweet oranges. They introduce an exuberant fruit note to the palate, covered by dry, bitter lemon, pushed by a slightly metallic carbonation. Finishes with luscious lemon rind, leafes, a sparkly burn and a dried orange. Convinces by a world-class balance between sweeter malts and distinct hops, which blend marvelously well together. The hops provide an awesome flavor profile, around which the flavors are successfully build, exhibiting a great depth

Clear orange. White foam. Sweet grape fruit on the nose. Lots of bitter grape fruit and grassy harsh hops. Medium body. Very nice but a little too harsh for my taste.

Wow, this is a gem from the first mouthful. Sl cloudy golden and this head but that’s about as bad as it gets. Rich honey malts with a raspy citrus hop bite. Mouthfeel is all grapefruit, best pink grapefruit. Lovely balance of malt and sweet and bitter citrus and that dry mouthfeel with afterburps for a long time to come. The best beer I’ve had for a long time - well done

2 week old bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. The beer pours a mostly clear, brightly colored amber with a thick white head that slowly shrinks to a finger and leaves lots of lacing. This beer is beautiful. Immediately I smell tropical fruit aromas as I pour. Upon further inspection I can detect bright mango, pineapple, and bubblegum. Real nice and fruity. When finally tasting the beer I first note an immediate piney hop bitterness that is quickly met with the tropical flavors detected in the aroma. The resinous qualities of this beer come back just as quickly as they faded and mix with a somewhat restrained caramel malt. Very nice. The mouthfeel is nice and full and the beer clings to your tongue and mouth. It is still refreshing despite it’s body, and I could sesh this beer, at least for a 6 pack. Overall this is a fantastic IPA and worth seeking out, fresh if possible.
