COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bonused from snojerk321. Thanks Torry! Pours clear golden with medium carbonation. Aroma is citrus and the slighest touch of thiol, but not terribly strong. Drinks dry with nice bitterness but not too much flavor. Easy to drink, but not what I had been expecting. Still a well-made beer.

Dark yellow-orange pour with thin white head. Aroma is strong hops and citrus. Flavor is extreme hops, heavy citrus, light malt. Finish is dry & hoppy, fairly soft mouthfeel. Not as big of a fan of this IPA as others, mostly due to the dry-hop feel to it.

Pours golden with a small white head. Smells of hops and peaches. Tastes of hops, fruit, peaches, and slight bitter. Very refreshing and delicious. Simple but complex.

This beer pours out a pale orange with a white head and lots of bubbles. Aromas of weed, grapefruit, and alcohol. I like the flavor a lot more, waves of every kinds of citrus fruit I can think of. Some sweet and slightly bready malt lies underneath. There is a lingering orange zest and bitter aftertaste. Delicious and refreshing, it showcases what you can do with hop aromatics and flavors over hop bitterness.

Sipping on this one as I type... form a bomber (obtained from foppa78 at DLD - thanks bro!) into my Dogfish Head signature glass. Pours a mostly clear golden color with a nice fluffy white head. Aroma is solid but doesn’t really blow me away. I’m picking up a bitter citrus almost slightly lemon flavor. Bubbly carbonation rules the palate at first with a more gentle smoothness on the finish. Overall I have to say I was a bit disappointed by this. No doubt it is a great representation of the style, but I just didn’t love it as much as I was hoping I would.

From memory of taster @ the brewery. This coulda been a contender, if not for the onions. Awefully nice citrus and perfume on the nose, and then onion. No one else will really notice, but it’s there. Otherwise, excellent.

Pretty much the perfect IPA, plus it’s always readily available. Sturdy enough malt backbone that lets bright apricot and citrus shine.

Bottle @ home from SF (thx Erik!!) Pours clear gold-copper, smooth white foam. Nose is fresh, with stone fruits and pine. Taste starts fresh and crisp with citrus, to descend in depths of flavour: Granny smith apple, citrus, sugary white grapes and bags of hop. All in perfect equilibrium and with a modest 7%ABV. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Tried this with 3 other people. All over the board. One loved it, one hated it and two of us in the middle. Smells and tastes like a citrus bomb with a little bitterness. Surprisingly easy to drink.
