COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured from a bottle. Clear golden orange with foamy white head and some nice lacing. Fantastic aroma - citrus, pine and tropical fruit. Taste is bitter throughout with some sweetness opening up in the middle followed by a bitter dry finish that lingers and lingers. Very nicely balanced. Really enjoyed this beer, only thing that didn’t suit my taste was the heavy dryness. Mouthfeel was moderate with crisp carbonation. An excellent IPA.

Förhållandevis lättsam och snäll. Bra balans mellan fruktighet och beska. Helt klart en toppöl, även om det inte är en champ!

IPAs aren’t really my thing. This one’s good. It has a nice bitterness that’s a nicely balanced between astringency and citrusy/floral. And at 7% ABV it’s not too malty.

Maybe ts too cold, but there was not much of an aroma, but I did notice a hint of lemon peel. Definitely a good looking beer; amber body and slightly cloudy with lasting SUDS. Light on the palate. The taste is outstanding with something different than other IPA; almost a bit of smokiness to the hops. The hops are intense but not too overpowering. As far as IPAs goes, this one is up there with Bell’s Two Hearted.

Clear burnt amber color, moderately frothy white head. Pine, herbal, caramel malt, and perhaps a little citrus. Resinous bitterness throughout. Smooth, a bit oily, and leaves a somewhat astringent finish.

Very nice ale, served on draft at a spot in San Diego. Medium fizz, light golden colour.

Ballast Point Sculpin is listed by many as a great beer. I am often times leery of mass approval of anything, with that in mind I gave this IPA a try. it was poured into a pint glass and did have a very pleasing light color for an IPA. The aroma was strong but not overpowering and when I took the first sip, I realized many voters are just towing the party line. I like IPAs but I get the since many of these brews are made the "drier" the better and to me that takes away from savoring the flavor. I would drink it again but I don’t consider this a fantastic brew. I prefer Ballast Point’s Wahoo White which I consider to be an excellent brew. But for the craft beer aficionado this beer would be well worth a sample beer or two to see if it is your cup of tea (so to speak)

Mango, grapefruit, kiwi, sweet resiny aroma. Cloudy honey gold with a thick foamy white head that sticks around for quite a while. Lots of grapefruit. But not so bitter that it's overpowering. This is very well balanced and very smooth. It has a crisp finish but then a bit of an after-warmth in the throat. Pretty good stuff.

Gold color, clear Full body, packed with a rainbow of flavors, very complex and elegant, long on the palate. Bitter but not too dry, herby, ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
