COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz bomber via trade courtesy of Snojerk321. Poured into a tulip. Pours a clear golden color, similar in color to Two Hearted, with 1-finger white head. Aroma of huge citrus and fruit - lemon, orange, papaya, mango, peach, along with some pine. Taste of sweet caramel malt and big bitter citrus, nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with medium carbonation. This is considered a world-class IPA for good reason!

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a short-lived white head the coats most of the glass it is poured in. Aroma is tropical fruit. Taste is a similar peach/mango/tropical fruit combination with a slight bitterness on the finish. Thick mouthfeel. Lovely beer.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2014 Bottle pour. Golden with thin white head. Some lacing. Pleasant citrus hop aroma. Taste is bitter and grapefruit with some sweetness. Refreshing. I enjoyed this again from a can, with the same impression. A very nice IPA with citrus and fruity aromas and taste.

Yellow, almost straw-colored (great to see an IPA of this magnitude that’s actually a pale ale). A rather thin white head settles in a moderate pace. Massive hop aromas in the nose. Plenty of exotic fruits, but not so dominated by grapefruits as many other hop forward beers are. Instead here are generous amounts of mango and passion fruits (along with the grapefruit of course). Here is also a very pleasant smell of elder flowers. Some pine needles and hop resins. Biscuity malts are present as well. The taste replicates the smell with very fresh hop flavors all around. Exotic fruits (grapefruit, mango, passion fruit) mix with elder flowers and hop resins. A semi-sweet crisp and biscuity malty backbone. The finish is really bitter with notes of pine-needles and, citric notes and grassy hop notes. Medium to semi-full body, nice sticky mouthfeel. Crisp carbonation. This is a great IPA with a massive and very tasty hop profile. Still, it manages to stay very balanced. The malts are almost perfectly suited for the hop centered flavors. Bottle t h a n k s again to YaMar. Pours a clear yellow beer with a nice head. Aroma is grapefruit and pine, extremely hoppy. This compares to Hopslam. Bitter dry finish, very nice beer!

Pours a clear golden amber color with a thin white head. Super fruity aroma with lots of mango, pineapple, citrus, and apricot. Similar flavor profile--explodes with juicy fruit madness and a sharp bitter hoppy edge. Complex, but straightforward. Medium to heavier body. Slightly slick finish. Awesome stuff, it’s very very easy to get used to drinking these.

P: A nice golden orange pour with a thick white head. S: Oranges, tropical fruits, pineapples, grapefruit, slight caramel, but its pretty much hops all the way. T: Pineapples, some tropical fruits, slight pine, some bready cracker malt, but thats really hidden, pretty much it just pounds you with hop. M: Carbonation sting, crispy, with slight bitterness with a grapefruit sticky finish. O: Just a wave of hops.
