San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle pour. A little underwhelmed by this, given the hype. Has a unique taste but a somewhat weak body. I don’t even know if i’d call it an IPA. Not bad though.

Bright amber with a white head. Pure hop goodness in the aroma, tropical fruit sweetness and fresh citrus, far from harsh. Flavour is also very tropical, inviting and clean with a mindblowing hop composition that comes across more as lovely juice rather than hop plants. Body is light and it goes down easily.

Bomber from Hy-Vee Liquor (!) in Quincy, IL (!!). Pours a clear golden orange with a windowpane-inducing white head. Aroma is a mix of subtle light-colored fleshy fruits, mostly apricot with a piney backbone. Tastes like a pine cone wrapped in incredibly subtle fruit flavors, and has a surprisingly dry finish. Not too boozy, but the malt characteristics do get crushed a bit by the fruits and hops.

Nicely carbonated and clear golden in color. The aroma is of citrus, hops, and lite sweet malts. A simple, balanced, and perfect IPA. The flavor matches the aroma. The finish has a mild bitterness that is very pleasant. It doesn’t linger either. Overall this is an excellent beverage to try.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. Aroma is dank, sweet tropical fruit, some malt, delicious. Appearance is gold-orange, opaque, white head. Taste is bitter, lemon tea flavor, bitter hops, piny, balanced. Mouthfeel is decent, crisp, decent carbonation, not too bad. Overall, it’s pretty good but I expected more.

Mildly hazy orange with some light carbonation and a filmy head that has good retention. Aroma has a very strong apricot, mango and grapefruit scent along with some pale malts. Flavor is very citrus forward with grapefruit, apricot, piney hops, resin, mango and peaches with some slight caramel maltiness. Body is heavy along with the carbonation. I think I may have found my new favorite IPA that isn’t local!
