COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Nice citrusy ipa that is really crisp and refreshing. Aroma is citrus faint pine with only a hint of grapefruit. Taste is hoppy with lots of citrus and light resin with only a faint undertone of malt flavor. This finish is crisp and good. Wanted to be blown away by this one, but hey itís still pretty outstanding!

2 week old bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. The beer pours a mostly clear, brightly colored amber with a thick white head that slowly shrinks to a finger and leaves lots of lacing. This beer is beautiful. Immediately I smell tropical fruit aromas as I pour. Upon further inspection I can detect bright mango, pineapple, and bubblegum. Real nice and fruity. When finally tasting the beer I first note an immediate piney hop bitterness that is quickly met with the tropical flavors detected in the aroma. The resinous qualities of this beer come back just as quickly as they faded and mix with a somewhat restrained caramel malt. Very nice. The mouthfeel is nice and full and the beer clings to your tongue and mouth. It is still refreshing despite itís body, and I could sesh this beer, at least for a 6 pack. Overall this is a fantastic IPA and worth seeking out, fresh if possible.

a damn good ipa....lighter in color and body then alot of the other examples of the style.... but......darn good nose of grapefruity hops....and also the lighter body helps to showcase the hops more....good stuff

Great beer. Aroma is strong in hops, fruit, and sweetness. The appearance is a clear light orange. Taste is complex with hops, fruit, bitter, then a bit of a sweet finish.

Bottle. Pours golden yellow with white head that dissipates. Piney hop aroma. Nice hop flavor that isn't too overwhelming or boozy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Lots of grapefruit in this one. Bitter citrus hops, caramel, orange, tart fruit and pine with undertones of bread. Well balanced and a dry finish. Lives up to its reputation as a world class IPA

Not your average IPA with loads of mango, apricots and peaches on the nose. Taste is not as sweet as aroma, instead subduing the fruits and the pines creating a mild yet distinctly bitter beverage. Different.

Incredibly fruity aroma that is intrusive - in a good way. Very fruity but still well- balanced. Not too sweet, still has that bitterness. A hefty 93 SEK (approx 14 usd) at Bishop Arms in Kiruna, but in Sweden thatís not too bad for great craft beer.

Draft. Tap takeover at Original Gravity during SF beer week. Pours half way between gold and orange. Loads of grapefruit. Orange. Bitter grapefruit and rind hops. Aroma is the same. There seems to be some peach in both the aroma and the flavor.

Thanks kmweaver for sharing this bomber: Tremendous resin and orange notes in hop aroma exponentially increased in hop flavor. I suspect a touch of crystal malt supplements the lean base malt profile. There is a curious drying note in finish that I find leans toward solvent warmth, yet my knowing informal tasting partner kmweaver calls íslightly vinousí. This may be balancing, or possibly a mark off (most prominent as beer warms). Amazing hop schedule-- is it simcoe/amarillo?
