San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber, almost gold. Slight head. Aroma is a perfect mix of citrus and pine. Taste has all of the characteristics of a great ipa. Grapefruit, some lemon, and a subdued pine flavor are the highlights. Bitterness is not cloying or biting making it very easy to drink. Great ipa.

Clear, orange colour with big, stable head. Nice lacing too. After opening the bottle, it feels big punch of citrus (grapefruit!), exotic fruits (mango, maybe even passion fruit), some floral note and malty base on background. Taste is light to medium sweet, medium to heavy bitter, light dry. Finish is very long, biiter, but not harsh or tart. Soft carbonation. Medium to full body. Fantastic, very drinkable, no doubt one of the best IPA I’ve ever tried.

Pretty darn good. Very earthy dank and bitter. Good amount of pine. Not really citrus tasting. So darn fresh and tasty. Big down side, too darn expensive. The price is reflected in the Overall category. I usually wouldn’t let something like that reflect my rating, but $16 a six pack is too much money. Easily could be a 4.5 out of 5 if the price were closed to $10 a six pack.

Rating #111. Bomber. Strong floral aroma right at the pour, and after at the glass, with a faint but solid mango scent working in. Flavor is solidly floral with mango and something like orange-strawberry-pineapple juice kicking in toward the middle-end palate. Really complex brew here. There’s actually a bitter funk at the beginning that blossoms into the rest of the palate and makes the whole thing that much more lovely. Bravo Ballast Point. This is a beer to remember!

12oz bottle pour. Light golden orange with about a finger of sudsy head. Citrus aroma. Taste of grassy and citrus hops with a solid malt presence. Pretty decent amount of bitterness. Killer lacing left behind. This was good.

On tap at Duke’s, Malibu. Hot damn, this is a nice beer. Great aroma kicking my nose, nice great balance with malt. Alcohol is well hidden. I slurped two of these down in a hurry and would have had more but I was driving. Yummm0.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2011 Man, what a great IPA. Smells like mango, tastes like grapefruit, all wrapped in a bitter hoppy shell. The malts give Sculpin the tiniest bit of sweetness on the front, but the beer truly is a showcase of hops, bitter and citric and dry as the finish turns piney and resinous. Not an IPA for the timid, this bottle does stretch the limits of the amounts of hops that can be pounded into a single India Pale Ale. But, hey, fuck the timid. Life’s too short to drink underhopped IPAs. So drink Sculpin. It’s delicious.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2015 This is a great IPA! Bitter but still fruity. Great with spicy salsa. Refreshing. Apricot and grapefruit hoppy taste. Dry, but still quenching. Must try!
