San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Clear golden pour, with just a touch of amber, coupled with a very nice head and long lasting lacing. The nose is a complex blend of grapefruit, mango and other sweet tropicals against a subtle spruce. Light medium body with a smooth texture. The carbonation level is a touch above normal. The outstanding flavor profile is expertly complex and follows the nose. Grapefruit leads then flows into the sweeter hop flavors. In the middle the biscuit malt comes through against a subtle spruce flavor. The finish effervesces into a grapefruit bitter tartness over a caramel sweetness. This is an outstanding complex hop flavor bomb.

Most delicious new IPA Iíve had in years. Color is a bright golden hue, transparent, with a slight tinge of orange. Head is white and frothy rich, thick, meringue-like and jiggles when nudged. Head recedes to a thinner, but long lasting lace and Belgian lace surrounds the inside of my glass as this one goes down. Nose is full of bright citrus and citrusy black tea aromas. Iím leaning towards tangerine and peaches with that black tea component, and a slight suggestion of biscuits. Sharp on the palate right away, but not an overwhelming in your face hop presence. Itís big but not an assault like some APAís can offer. The bright citrus comes through and again some of the black tea qualities. Faint biscuity malt is in there, and it has a smooth creamy mouthfeel. I pick up some lemon towards the end.

22 oz bottle pours a hazy golden amber body with a tall offwhite head that lasts forever. Lavish sticky lacing. Aroma is citrusy and floral(orange blossoms) with pink grapefruit, oranges, and other tropical fruits underneath. Taste has a prevailing citrusy hop bitterness that is mostly pink grapefruit. A plethora of tropical fruits peak adds delicate hints throughout. Malt presence adds a gentle whisper of sweetness. Very clean and even, supremely well balanced. Delicious and dangerously drinkable.

Bottle. Golden color, moderate head, big citrusy aroma. Flavor is big hop presence with some nice flavor notes of citrus and resiny pine, with just the right amount of malt. Substantial on the palate, with a chewy quality that I like. Has a long pleasing bitter finish with some other good flavors hanging in there too. Manages to stay just on the right side of line for bitterness. I can see why this gets the rating it does; itís a new favorite.

22. A very large IPA, XXXL. Massive hops press strong citrus & piney resins on your tongue. Last bomber. Will purchase again.

Draught. Pours a hazy dark orange with a moderately lasting off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, mango, passion fruit, orange. Taste is of more exotic fruit, orange. Really fruity and refreshing. Oily mouthfeel, medium to high carbonation. Great ipa.

Pours a deep golden amber with a medium off white head, light lacing. Aroma is a citrus grapefruit hops with a very good sweet caramel malt character. Taste is sweet caramel malt followed by some good citrus hops with some very good grapefruit tangy notes. A medium bodied brew has a smooth mouth feel and moderate carbonation, easy on the palate and taste buds. The finish is a well balanced combination of caramel malt and citrus hops with a bit of lingering grapefruit tangy flavor. Overall a solid, very good, tasty and enjoyable IPA

On draught at baileys / pours a very clear copper color. Nose of floral, hop, and citrus. Taste of candied hop - nice balance of hop and malt. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Golden pour with small white head, lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus, some hops. Flavor was more muted, less of citrus and more hint of hops. An OK IPA, but I think overrated consider how high its been scored and hyped.
