COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours a beautiful gold with a thick white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, oranges, HOPS!!! Hops and more hops on the palat, but somehow not overpowering; very easy to drink. Nice dry bitter finish. This is without a doubt one of the best balanced super-hoppy IPAs I have ever had the pleasure to try; glad I bought more than one bomber!

Beautiful orange copper with a pillowy white head. Gorgeous lacing throughout. I just have to sit and admire this baby. Bouqet of grapefruit and melon. Pungent hop flavor with citrus and the perfet malt balance. Lingering sweetness with long lasting bitterness. Dry finish with some alcohol warmth, I canít put it down, it is soo good.

This was my first time ordering online and none of the hop forward beers I purchased came with any dates that I could tell, disappointing. This one is over the hill. Nice golden pear tone, thinner head that recedes to a minimal cap but then retains throughout Nose is a bit subdued, mostly citrus but truly difficult to discern, I have an easier time smelling the glass that I poured it into. The character isnít nearly as muted as I wouldíve guessed by the smell - all that citrus - tangerine, grapefruit, abstract bitter... clearly outdated though. Mouthfeel is thinner than I wouldíve expected but seems appropriate for this particular brew, carbonation is still spot on. Overall, I guess Iíll just wait for a good trade opportunity or a vacation to give this one a real review.

Bottle Shared with GMCC2181, thanks Gabe. Aroma was pine, citrus and hops. Color was a nice bright light orange with nice head. Taste was pine, floral, and grassy. A nice easy to drink smooth IPA.

Poured from tap into Chimay glass a nice amber with white head and lace. Aroma was grapefruit and a bit floral. Taste to me was a better balance between the hops and malt. It was grapefruit not doubt but not a bomb. Med body. Really liked this one, a winner for sure.

Grapfruit in the aroma, tropcial fruit and a bit of malt. Copper colored, not very long lasting white head. Very piney dry taste upfront with a dry finish. Not overly complex but very unique. A bit of malt and tropical fruit in the aftertaste. Not overly complex but very refined and unique. Carbonation feels very fine. Medium bodied.

Iíve been fairly impressed with the offerings from Ballast Point that Iíve been able to try so far. Itís newer to me, but good beer. The aroma is booming with fruity hop smells of peaches, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Had a nice golden tone to it with some haze. Some sweetness to start followed by a good medium bitter. If you havenít had a chance to try Ballast Point, I suggest you do.

22 bottle at Smithís in downtown Springfield. This might be my new favorite IPA. The citrus flavors are over the top. I love the orange juice finish balanced with a light sweet malt. As it warmed up a bit, the floral and grassy flavors appeared. This was the perfect break from the kitchen renovation. I asked Jimmy for something with citrus hop flavors from his private stock... and he delivered.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 This coulda been a contender, if not for the onions. Awfully nice citrus and perfume on the nose, and then onion. No one else will really notice, but itís there. Otherwise, excellent. Re-rate: The onions are milder this time. But I still donít understand the hype. I like their Big Eye better.
