San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2013 Orange pour into snifter. Piney and orange citrus on the nose then tongue. Dry. Missing the body of an East Coast IPA, but that’s the point, right? Lovely.

12 oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: Orange/copper in color. Generous white head with good retention. Impressive lacing. Pretty close to ideal. Aroma: Lots of citrus on the nose. Orange, grapefruit. Peach. Some floral notes also. Really nice. Taste: Pretty dry upfront with mild bitterness in the finish. Palate: Medium/light body. Soft mouthfeel. Longer finish. Overall: This beer has a lot going for it. The aroma is fantastic. The hops profile is pretty much ideal for me. Appearance was very nice as well. The body was a little lighter than I prefer, but I know this was by design. Overall a very nice beer.

2013/10/30 - Pours a translucent orange/copper colour with a soapy, off white head that laces nicely. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits and apricots. Taste is citrus and tropical hops, with mild pine notes accompanied by nicely balanced caramel malts. Mouthfeel is medium, with biting carbonation and a dry and crisp finish followed by a lingering bitterness. Top notch IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

PunkAGM2015 rate catchup from notes. 6/6/15. Hazy gold. Oily with soft carbonation. Big grapefruit (not so different from the Sculpin Grapefruit in many ways) and tropical notes. Fruity deliciousness. Outstanding IPA,

Heard rave reviews about this and had to give it a go. Clear, golden pour with a nice, sticky head. Nose is packed with citrus and pine notes. The flavor keeps up where the nose left off, lots of citrus and dry, earthy hops permeating throughout. Can’t say I’m disappointed from what I have heard about this brew, it is solid through and through.

Can from Mother Kelly’s. A juicy banger in the parlance of our times. Decent bitterness for a West Coast, not too malty essentially.. Nice tropical notes. Good fare indeed.

From a bottle, pours light amber with white head quickly fading to ample lacing. Very fragrant, lots of floral and citrus. Nice hop bite balanced with notes of honey. An outstanding IPA... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

One of the IPAs I’ve been lucky enough to sample, they are my favorite brew and what I rate beers by, trip to LA and first stop was Whole Foods Redondo Beach, they had 22 oz bombers, bought 2. tangerine gold hue with white head, nice citrusy smell, nector and resin they way it should be, well balanced texture, medium carbonation, not too bitter, very good stuff

Clear golden pour, with just a touch of amber, coupled with a very nice head and long lasting lacing. The nose is a complex blend of grapefruit, mango and other sweet tropicals against a subtle spruce. Light medium body with a smooth texture. The carbonation level is a touch above normal. The outstanding flavor profile is expertly complex and follows the nose. Grapefruit leads then flows into the sweeter hop flavors. In the middle the biscuit malt comes through against a subtle spruce flavor. The finish effervesces into a grapefruit bitter tartness over a caramel sweetness. This is an outstanding complex hop flavor bomb.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2013 Pours hazy deep orange gold with a fluffy, golden-tinged head that settles to a finger and fades gradual-like. Wafts a wonderful sweet aroma that carries over into the front end of a sip. Floral hop notes and vanilla, caramel, orange and peach. Taste has powerful and complex citrus from sweet orange and lemon to bitter grapefruit. Incredible balance - this beer dances along your tongue. Pine hops and caramel malt in there too. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitterness is enhanced with warming. Outstanding depth of flavor and truly amazing balance between sweet and bitter. A world-class IPA.
