COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2011 22oz bottle. Pours golden copper and a nice fluffy head. Amazing scent of mangoes and guava. I was ultimately disappointed with this beer, however, as the taste of this did not match the expectations provided by the aroma. There is a sweet bitterness here that I wish was featured a bit more, and there is definitely no "sting" that supposedly earned this beer its’ name.

I have had this beer more than a few times but never written a review. This one is based on a 22 0z. bottle. Poured a light golden amber with an ample two-finger head which dissapted into a white covering fairly quickly. Lacing was on the lighter side but lasted. Nose is a wonderful collection of orange and mango, some pine and floral hops. Taste starts with a some sweetness and citrus and then quickly folds into a pleasantly dry and mildly bitterness. There is some alcohol warming at the end as well. Feel is medium to light and oily. This is a very refreshing beer you must try - IF it’s fresh. Highly recommended and near the top of my favs.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2011 Pint from my pal Jess down at the Local 4th and broadway SD.. The pour is typical ballast point,,, a little lighter in shade than some others but enough murkiness to let me know there is something behind the veil. The aroma is powerful.. Its deep robust experienced hops.. and the first hit to the palate is that of an impecably constructed ipa, hops yes, powerful yes.. Pine, bitter hops, but the surprise is how smooth this thing is on the afterbite.. I think its neck and neck with the Alesmith, or even nose to nose.. Now thats a heavy weight fight worth ordering.. Well down ballast point.. Oh and by the way.. the coolest name for a beer.> EVER!!

P: Pours a clear (tiny specks) apricot body with a off white milky head that leaves behind wet sloppy lacing. S: Aroma delivers lush peaches and apricots are leading the way of the tropical parade. Lemon tartness and faint pine resin contribute to the sweet fruit. T/M: Super sweet tropical fruits up front then the bitter lemon, grapefruit and orange oil take over the dry finish. Toasted toffee malt and pepper. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. O: Lush tropical fruits delicate spice and toasted malt. The bitterness in the finish really rounds out the sweetness. Fantastic easy drinking IPA to seek out.

Nice cloudy golden amber, about an inch of head settles to a half finger, pretty good lacing. Aroma is full of fruit and citrus. Lots of mango, pineapple, apricots, hops, grapefruit, and little honey. Taste is pretty close to the nose. Lots of mango and hop. It is sweet, tangy, and bitter all at once. Mouth feel is pretty bright, lots of "zing" from the carbonation. Smooth going down with some hop bitterness and a little sweetness in the body.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Arrogant Bastard 0.5 L glass. There is no freshness date. Beer is hazy and amber in color. Carbonation is moderate to high with biggish bubbles. Head is thick, large bubbles, leaves some lacing as it falls away. Beer smell like funky pine hops and not much else. Smells fine for an IPA. Spicy, citrus and pine hops. Beer is not dry but rather wet. Almost no aftertaste. The hops cover you mouth. Second taste oranges, pine, lemon, some sweetness, a very good tasting beer. Medium body good connectiveness in the flavors, hits all the centers on the palate, drinkability high. Serving type: bottl
