San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle from SD at home. Bright (almost neon) translucent orange pour - looks delicious. Aroma is apricot and peachy sweetness - not that strong. Taste is fruity hoppy with a very strong crisp bitterness. Not as big as I thought it would be. Solid crisp IPA with some juicy flavors. I think my expectations were too high.

22oz bomber thanks to mar (for a great beer!). Pours a clear, deep golden body with some off-white head that leaves lots of sticky lacing. Aroma of Ruby Red grapefruit and other fresh citrus hops. Sort of reminds me of a South Texas fruit stand in the summer. Flavor of citrus hops, grapefruit, pine, floral hops and citrus zest. Medium mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Absolutely great!!

12 oz bottle poured into my Ipa glass. Pours a golden amber color with a thick fluffy white head that leaves awesome lacing. Smells of pine, tropical, citrus and floral. Tastes of all the same things in the smell with a good hoppy finish. Mouthfeel is silky, creamy and chewy with good carbonation and a semi dry finish. Wow this is one of the best ipas I’ve ever had. Well balanced and full of flavor. Glad this is finally on the Washington State market. Will be buying this regularly.

Canned 6/26/13 and picked up at The Beer Temple in Chicago. Oh, how I’m looking forward to this... Appearance: Pours with a massive four finger soapy head that stays for quite awhile. Sculpin has a pretty clear light amber color. The lacing is fantastic. Excellent looking IPA. Smell: Grass and peaches are the two things that I get most. There is also a slight citrus note in there as well. Really does smell nice. Taste: Quite a lot like the aroma, really. Kind of tastes like a ripe peach at first, and the medium feel of Sculpin gives that impression even more. There’s then a bitterness on the middle of the tongue, with a sticky, dry, piney and bitter finish. The aftertaste is just lingering pine and peach bitterness that I love. Sculpin’s an excellent name for this IPA, especially as it warms up. After being out for about ten minutes, the bitterness intensifies, and the alcohol becomes traceable. Canned and put onto my tastebuds here in Michigan just 12 days later. A six-pack ran me $14 or $15, which is definitely kind of steep (considering I can get a sixer of Two Hearted for $10), but this has an excellent bitter pine and peach flavor that I thoroughly enjoy. If this were available in Michigan, I’d definitely pick it up from time-to-time... even with the slightly higher price point.

Nice specimen. Almost a bit pale but very happy and a bit floral/piney as well. Mild bitterness.

Oranges & pineapple aroma. Excellently balanced between slightly sweet malts & bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel with a fruit salad of flavours. Believe the hype! Rated by BrewTom

Quite yeasty blonde colored IPA. Deliriously appealing aroma of mango and grapefruit. The intense hoppiness takes a lot of place in the overall flavor, with its piny and tropical fruits notes; very pleasant mouthfeel, especially in the deepness, or the “full-mouthness” of the hop flavors Not much sweetness comes out, except in the cookie notes provided by the delightful malt backbone. Amazing IPA, amongst the best I had. This beer is not overrated; it is just awesome!

Amazing flavor and aroma, dominated by citrus but with a lot of depth. A little fruit sweetness that balances the bitterness nicely. Not quite a DIPA, but a strong IPA - this level of ABV & IBU’s really allows you to savor each flavor without anything being too overwhelming.

Bottle 0.33l at Monk’s American Bar Stockholm. Pours orange with a large white head. Aroma is full of grapefruit, peaches and more. Taste is an amazing blend of bitterness, exotic fruits without being sweet. A perfect IPA.
