San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

The aroma had big grapefruits, and oranges w/ slight pine notes. The beer poured a yellow color w/ gold highlights; slight head and thin lacing. The flavor had grapefruits, oranges, pine and a very slight hint of flowers. The mouthfeel was light bodied and crisp, really good carbonation.

Clear golden pour, with just a touch of amber, coupled with a very nice head and long lasting lacing. The nose is a complex blend of grapefruit, mango and other sweet tropicals against a subtle spruce. Light medium body with a smooth texture. The carbonation level is a touch above normal. The outstanding flavor profile is expertly complex and follows the nose. Grapefruit leads then flows into the sweeter hop flavors. In the middle the biscuit malt comes through against a subtle spruce flavor. The finish effervesces into a grapefruit bitter tartness over a caramel sweetness. This is an outstanding complex hop flavor bomb.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2014 The aroma is tangy with lots of fruit, like grapefruit and banana. The taste is sweet and strong with hops. Very well balanced West coast IPA.

Rich, yet with so much balance. Very complex... Herb, concentrated citrus, tropical fruits... Bitterness definitely in control. Big and smooth, without being heavy and sticky. Long lingering finish. An impressive IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Mango, grapefruit, kiwi, sweet resiny aroma. Cloudy honey gold with a thick foamy white head that sticks around for quite a while. Lots of grapefruit. But not so bitter that it's overpowering. This is very well balanced and very smooth. It has a crisp finish but then a bit of an after-warmth in the throat. Pretty good stuff.

On tap at Tony Roma’s in Anaheim. Pours a clear golden with a creamy, small off-white head that laces. Sweet tropical fruit aroma of peach, mango, grapefruit and pine. Sweet flavour of grapefruit, malt, tropical fruit and pine with a dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Excellent. Best IPA I have tried.

Clear burnt amber color, moderately frothy white head. Pine, herbal, caramel malt, and perhaps a little citrus. Resinous bitterness throughout. Smooth, a bit oily, and leaves a somewhat astringent finish.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a stemmed glass. The color is a clear orange/gold with two or three fingers of foamy white head and some thick lacing. The smell is pretty floral hops with some funky citrus flavor. This has a nice west coast IPA feel and I am impressed already. The taste is pretty sweet and pretty bitter but with a fruity citrus flavor that does give off a bit of zing. Pretty good spiky flavor that does poke with a bitterness that is not surprising but fun. Some tropical fruit I can’t name brings you to a slapped back fruity flavor. The feel of this beer is a pretty smooth beer. It goes down pretty darn smooth but does leave it’s mark on your mouth as it bitters the palate with some nice flavor.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2014 Bottle pour from Whole Foods Market - Redwood City, CA. So crisp with heavy grapefruit and the right amount of honey. Ideal Sunday breakfast drinking.
