San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2009 Bomber. This is a fantastic IPA. Pours very clear and has the citrus aroma in spades. White peach, grapefruit, lemon, honey. I think these beers go from the far "pine" spectrum to the far "citrus" spectrum. This is far on the citrus side. Fantastic and easy to drink, I could have this all day long. Rerated 11/25/09: from 4.1 to 4.5 this is amazing beer, Huge aroma of fresh citrus hops and absolutely delicious on my tongue. wow, killer beer.

From notes, at Craft Beer event in Puerto Rico. Cloudy amber orange colour. Aroma of citrus fruit, noticeable lemon, and some tart apples. Nice hop bitter and carbonation.

Pours clear copper with a big puffy beige head, very good lacing, excellent retention. Aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral notes, bread, grass. Medium body, creamy. Lightly sweet, a hint of citrus, full bitter finish, but not over-the-top. Nice fruity-hop IPA.

Most delicious new IPA I’ve had in years. Color is a bright golden hue, transparent, with a slight tinge of orange. Head is white and frothy rich, thick, meringue-like and jiggles when nudged. Head recedes to a thinner, but long lasting lace and Belgian lace surrounds the inside of my glass as this one goes down. Nose is full of bright citrus and citrusy black tea aromas. I’m leaning towards tangerine and peaches with that black tea component, and a slight suggestion of biscuits. Sharp on the palate right away, but not an overwhelming in your face hop presence. It’s big but not an assault like some APA’s can offer. The bright citrus comes through and again some of the black tea qualities. Faint biscuity malt is in there, and it has a smooth creamy mouthfeel. I pick up some lemon towards the end.

Pours a deep golden amber with a medium off white head, light lacing. Aroma is a citrus grapefruit hops with a very good sweet caramel malt character. Taste is sweet caramel malt followed by some good citrus hops with some very good grapefruit tangy notes. A medium bodied brew has a smooth mouth feel and moderate carbonation, easy on the palate and taste buds. The finish is a well balanced combination of caramel malt and citrus hops with a bit of lingering grapefruit tangy flavor. Overall a solid, very good, tasty and enjoyable IPA

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2014 Bottle pour. Golden with thin white head. Some lacing. Pleasant citrus hop aroma. Taste is bitter and grapefruit with some sweetness. Refreshing. I enjoyed this again from a can, with the same impression. A very nice IPA with citrus and fruity aromas and taste.

Bottle. Golden color, moderate head, big citrusy aroma. Flavor is big hop presence with some nice flavor notes of citrus and resiny pine, with just the right amount of malt. Substantial on the palate, with a chewy quality that I like. Has a long pleasing bitter finish with some other good flavors hanging in there too. Manages to stay just on the right side of line for bitterness. I can see why this gets the rating it does; it’s a new favorite.

22 oz bottle pours a hazy golden amber body with a tall offwhite head that lasts forever. Lavish sticky lacing. Aroma is citrusy and floral(orange blossoms) with pink grapefruit, oranges, and other tropical fruits underneath. Taste has a prevailing citrusy hop bitterness that is mostly pink grapefruit. A plethora of tropical fruits peak adds delicate hints throughout. Malt presence adds a gentle whisper of sweetness. Very clean and even, supremely well balanced. Delicious and dangerously drinkable.
