COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured a clear golden/copper color with a huge white, frothy head. Aroma is resin, floral, citrus, and grapefruit. Taste is grapefruit, lemon, pine, with a slight grass taste. This is what an IPA tastes like. Nothing more to say.

Pours a nice golden color with a decent head that only sustains a minimal amount. Aroma is not huge but very nice, notes of bitter and sweet hops, citrus providing the bitter and an almost fruity sweetness. Taste is fantastic, notes of citrus orange zest and floral bitter hops, an absolutely awesomely done IPA.

Poured a dark hazy yellow with a thin head which still had a nice lacing. The aroma has some strong aromas of fruits like apricots in addition to some vegetable like sweet baby carrots. Taste is quite heavy on apricot and some rather strong bittering hops. The high alfa acid bitterness lingers heavily on the aftertaste. Body is also quite heavy for the style. It’s very enjoyable, though certainly an unabashedly unbalanced IPA.

Pours a dark golden color with a white head that does not go away at all and leaves large amounts of lazing. Smells very fruity and a bit sweet maybe caramel on the head, yet the hops are there. This beer starts off with a bit og malty sweetness and fruityness at the the start and then goes into a hop parade and leaves a not so bitter finish. Great beer, wish I had more than one

Ported from BA. Appearance: Lots of foamy white head, almost 3 fingers of it. The beer itself is more of a golden yellow honey color. It has some slight haze to it, but that might be from the low temperature. Smell: Piney and lemony. What we have here is a bottle of Pinesol, no doubt. Some apricot also comes in, which is a pretty nice little change from the usual grapefruit flavors we’ve been seeing lately. Taste: Wow, WAY drier than what I was expecting from the smell. On top of that, it’s extremely piney. The bottle mentions several fruits, but if they’re in there, they can’t stand up to the crazy amount of pine in this thing. There’s a good amount of bitterness sticking around too. Mouthfeel: A light body that really sticks to you. There’s something kind of syrupy about it actually. Overall: Solid, but not as well balanced as I’d like. Definitely has a high drinkability, and it might be a good introductory IPA due to it’s light body and non-overwhelming bitterness. Would I have another? Maybe. Would I buy another bomber? Probably not.

From a 22 ounce bottle into a frosted pint glass. Harsh hoppy bitterness follows this from aroma to first sip to aftertaste. Excellent. I get pine and citrus (grapefruit) together. I find it easy to drink.

Strong citrus IPA smell. Pours clear orange with a white head. Flavor is all grapefruit and bitter. Light beer with average carbonation, very good!

Bottled. No clear date on this. Pours a nice clear golden color with a nice frothy head. Aroma is big bold citrus, grapefruit, orange. Flavor is orange, some grapefruit, and a sweet malty biscuitiness. Well-balanced. Nice pleasant and very slightly slick mouthfeel. I feel this would be better rated if on tap.
