San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2011 Man, what a great IPA. Smells like mango, tastes like grapefruit, all wrapped in a bitter hoppy shell. The malts give Sculpin the tiniest bit of sweetness on the front, but the beer truly is a showcase of hops, bitter and citric and dry as the finish turns piney and resinous. Not an IPA for the timid, this bottle does stretch the limits of the amounts of hops that can be pounded into a single India Pale Ale. But, hey, fuck the timid. Lifeís too short to drink underhopped IPAs. So drink Sculpin. Itís delicious.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2014 Had it on tap at the Village Tap in Roscoe Village Chicago. Had it in a tulip glass had a slight head and even lacing with notes of citrus underlying its bold hop taste.

Another one of my all time favorites I had just never rated. †dark gold, with one finger foamy head. Strong pungent hop aroma, with some hints of grapefruit. Very well balanced taste for a big west coast IPA, plenty of hops but also nice body and some malty characters.†

Garlic_of_Doom (623) - SWEDEN - APR 22, 2016
Pours hazy light amber with a big frothy off white head. Aroma has lots of pineapple, pine and grapefruit. Taste is crisp and clean, hops play first fiddle with pineapple, pine and citrus pith, grapefruit bitterness, some pilsner malt. Medium body, medium carbonation, dry mouth feel. Short crisp, dry and bitter after taste.
Great balance, while the malt body isnít that big, the hops doesnít overpower while still being very present.

What I wish every IPA could be. Layered nose with caraway seed, pine and citrus. The palate is medium bodied, and shows excellent balance. A hit of grapefruit lingers as this is crisp and seamlessly transitions to the hoppy finish.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Pours an amber color with white head. Aroma is tons of citrus (grapefruit) and a bit of hops. Taste follows the nose. Grapefruit and a bit of bittering hops.

Bottle from the beer store in Southampton, PA. $20 for a six-pack. Hazy orange pour. Aroma of mango, peach, citrus, grapefruit, pine. Slightly fruity initial taste - tropical/mango, followed by a nice bitterness as the hops dominate the rest of the way through. Reminiscent of Dreadnaught. The high rating is completely justified.

A- Pours a golden hue with a nice, 2 finger, frothy off white head that is extremely chunky. S- Deep citrus fruits, mango, floral notes, grapefruit. T- Starts off light, floral hops, lots of grapefruit and tangerine on the back end with a deep bitterness. M- Medium bodied with carbonation that is a little too low. D- Very easy to drink. One of the best smelling IPAs out there. at 8.99 a bomber for an IPA itís definitely a once in a while thing.
