San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Courtesy of NorCalgrowler. Lots of citrus fruits in the nose, potent hop and pine bouquet. Smell is fantastic. Pours a nice orange color with a full fluffy white head, dissipates to a persistent thin head. Flavor is full of hop character and bitterness, honey, pine, fruit, and a good malt presence to balance. Medium body, a bit resiny and sweet, smooth with good carbonation. Overall a great beer, very well balanced with hop additions in all the right places.

Golden yellow with a small head. Floral and grapefruit hops aroma. Bitter and astringent flavor, but a bit of misplaced funk. This is quite good, if overrated.

Crazy delicious. I like my big IPA’s to pucker me up and say "Damn, man!". This does that to me. Like freshly squeezed hops and hemp, this is a fresh tasting, big time IPA. One of my favorites from Ballast Point.

On draft. Sure, this is commonly available all around the country and so ubiquitous that you don’t even notice it in the grocery store anymore. But it’s also a fantastic example of an American IPA. It’s got a really restrained malt profile, which makes it a clean, crisp hop showcase. There’s a firm bitterness mixed with some fruit and pine aromatics from the hops. Classic and really good.

Strong citrus bitter hop nose. Gold amber, with a small head and great lacing. A little syrupy. Tart acidity undertones. Citrus hops dominate the palate, lemon, grapefruit. Bitter hop carbonation, and slight lingering bitterness aftertaste.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2014 This is like a comfortable cardigan, a bit thin in places. Draft and highly anticipated and recommend. It is something I’d happily drink a lot of in a session. But it is safe. I was expecting something more aggressive, or peaky in the profile, and I got a very very good, easy drinking safe beer. 2nd January I had this again in a bottle. I’ve thought about this, and this really is a good beer, and to be enjoyed. I think I was harsh in my previous thinking, lumping this in ’the pack’ when it’s one of the leaders. I gave myself an uppercut.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2012 the aroma right off the bat was the citrus of the hops and as it warmed some i picked up the apricot and peach...what a wonderful scent to have in this beer...medium bodied and smooooooth...hops do no over power this beer at all..the citrus flavor and the apricot are forefront on this one and the smoothness as it goes down. on the back end you do get a bit of the lemon blended with the bitterness of the hops and it works...very very good beer.

amazing fresh-hop aroma full of apricot, grapefruit, and just a touch of cheese. pours a clear light yellow/orange with fizzy white head. flavor is predominantly bitter, but mild medium-thin body, crisp, lightly carbonated, with long hoppy finish.

wow. 650ml bottle poured hazy gold with rocky sticky yellowish head. Aroma is bright and very flural with sweet mago and grapefruit notes up front other citrus fruit notes in the mix also like oranges and peaches. Taste is hoppy and piney notes but still holds a citrus fruit taste with a very good body. Extreamly complex and the aroma is very strong. phenominal IPA
