COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Drank from a bottle after a sauna. Fruity, strongly hopped traditional IPA. The taste is a bit sharp but otherwise it’s good.

Pours a bright golden hue almost resembling a lager. Aroma is unique. I get lemon, melons, and a decent amount of booziness. It smells really fresh. The body on this beer is very light making it dangerously drinkable. Tropical citrus notes and a crisp finish with warming alcohol all the way through. Similar style to Pliny yet its own entity, really enjoyable and fresh.

12 oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: Orange/copper in color. Generous white head with good retention. Impressive lacing. Pretty close to ideal. Aroma: Lots of citrus on the nose. Orange, grapefruit. Peach. Some floral notes also. Really nice. Taste: Pretty dry upfront with mild bitterness in the finish. Palate: Medium/light body. Soft mouthfeel. Longer finish. Overall: This beer has a lot going for it. The aroma is fantastic. The hops profile is pretty much ideal for me. Appearance was very nice as well. The body was a little lighter than I prefer, but I know this was by design. Overall a very nice beer.

Pours a honey-orange color, one finger off-white head. Moderate carbonation running up the glass. Aromas of big citrus (grapefruit/orange) with subtle notes of pine, sweet malt and tropical fruitiness. Taste has a great balance of the bitter citrus notes and a light bodied sweetness then moving to some more sweet notes of papaya, kiwi....before harmonizing with a clean, moderate bitterness in the finish. Very well rounded beer.

Bottle (22 ounce): Clear, golden with a hint of copper and a thick head. Huge lift of fresh hops. Lantana, citrus, pine. Very fresh. Green but rich.. Dry to off dry. Medium to medium high bitterness. Not sour. Rich, very fresh. Great weight and length. Bitterness is balanced by flavor. Tropical, citrus, pine hop flavors with malt to match. Intense west coast IPA but as balanced as they come. Intense but lovely beer.

Poured from tap into Chimay glass a nice amber with white head and lace. Aroma was grapefruit and a bit floral. Taste to me was a better balance between the hops and malt. It was grapefruit not doubt but not a bomb. Med body. Really liked this one, a winner for sure.

Clear golden pour, with just a touch of amber, coupled with a very nice head and long lasting lacing. The nose is a complex blend of grapefruit, mango and other sweet tropicals against a subtle spruce. Light medium body with a smooth texture. The carbonation level is a touch above normal. The outstanding flavor profile is expertly complex and follows the nose. Grapefruit leads then flows into the sweeter hop flavors. In the middle the biscuit malt comes through against a subtle spruce flavor. The finish effervesces into a grapefruit bitter tartness over a caramel sweetness. This is an outstanding complex hop flavor bomb.

This is a great IPA! Bitter but still fruity. Great with spicy salsa. Refreshing. Apricot and grapefruit hoppy taste. Dry, but still quenching. Must try!

Grapfruit in the aroma, tropcial fruit and a bit of malt. Copper colored, not very long lasting white head. Very piney dry taste upfront with a dry finish. Not overly complex but very unique. A bit of malt and tropical fruit in the aftertaste. Not overly complex but very refined and unique. Carbonation feels very fine. Medium bodied.

On tap at Capone's in Norristown, PA. Actually tried this a few months after first trying the Habanero Sculpin, which was a beer I loved. It was nice to try this without the spice. Definitely a top tier IPA.
