COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Wow. This IPA has a very strong citrus grapefruit taste. I wasnít able to notice all the subtle flavors because of this, but it was still a good brew. I think I may stick to their big eye for now though.

Pours a golden amber color with a medium head the leaves decent lacing. Aromas of hops and citrus with more hops and a bit of pine. Flavors of hops grab you with citrus notes, a botter but pleasant aftertaste. Definitely a top selection for IPAs.

Pours a nice bright gold with a small white head. Really looks good. Smells of a west coast style IPA. Citrus/Grapefruit/Pine all hit your nose with a gusto. A little grassy too. Piney hop burst up front. Then the malts become slightly detectable while finishing with a lingering dry bitterness. Mouthfeel is fairly light with good carbonation levels. Sculpin has a reputation as one of the best West Coast IPAís and doesnít disappoint. The only knock is I wouldíve liked a little bit more grapefruitiness to balance out the piney resin, but a small nitpick at that as this beer is still good, just not elite.

22oz bottle courtesy of wavers1. Pours hazy orange with a thin white head that sticks around leaving thick lacing. Aroma is juicy, citrusy hops. A little breadiness in the background. Body is full, but crisp. Flavor is not very bitter, but very hoppy. Again, citrusy, juicy hops without being resiny. A little crisp maltiness in the finish. Incredible IPA!

Bottle acquired from a trade with stefanje, thanks much. This beer is everything I look for in an IPA. Very well balanaced, with a fantastic hop profile. Sadly, I have only one bottle.

On tap at Mountain Sunís durring their Hop Havrest Month. This is a great IPA with all of the charachteristics I like. Great citrus aroma, tonís of hop flavor and a nice bitter finish that keeps the taste lingering. Ballast Point has really improved their beers over the years.

Orange beer with a medium foamy white head that is actually pretty dense. Citrusy nose with grapefruit, orange, peach, and pear. Flavor has a bracing hop bite with some bright fruit notes reminiscent of the nose with the addition of some pine resin and pith, but overall itís not really that bitter for an IPA. I would have liked a little more prominent malt profile to balance it out a bit. Still, itís a refreshing, drinkable beer that is certainly worth your time.

Bottle pour from Whole Foods Market - Redwood City, CA. So crisp with heavy grapefruit and the right amount of honey. Ideal Sunday breakfast drinking.
