San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Very nice IPA. Hoppy, but very balanced and not at all over the top in any way. Fresh.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber, golden yellow hues when backlit. Lasting wispy head with lacing. Solid full flavor with dry, bitter finish. From notes 2/15/10.

Even though I don’t play favorites Sculpin IPA could be my favorite. Its always tasty, I have it everytime I come to San Diego. I have had it 3 or 4 times now and never rated it, well here goes. Aroma is peach, mango, grapefruit and orange, theres alot there. Appearance is beautiful orange gold with a nice frothy head. Taste is only amazing, thats it. Bright punchy sparkling liquid gold, with hops at the front mid and back of your swig, followed by a beatifully citrus swallow. Palate is hoppy, spicy and very tasty. It leaves some hoppy residue but for an IPA lover this is bliss. Overall super awesome you have to try it. 5.0

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2016 Nitro version on tap showing neon yellow with half a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows clean sweet grapefruit. The palate is obviously extremely smooth, full bodied, a lot of pithy grapefruit bitterness, with the fruit showing more in the background and a light bitterness on the finish.

22 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours an orange color with medium head. Nose is peach, pineapple, citrus and pine. Flavor follows the hose, with a bitter hop finish. A very good summertime brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Golden, almost clear, medium head. Fat aroma with plenty of fruit. Full bitterness well balanced with mango, pineapple and citrus.

Can into a pint glass from The Drinkery, Londonderry NH. Aroma is strong pine, herbs, fruit, spruce, while still being able to glean a maltiness, and some basement toward the bottom of the glass. Appearance is mild hazy orangish yellow with mild sparkle but nice foamy white two-finger width head, mild lacing. Taste is dominant mild-to-moderate bitter but with some sweet fruitiness throughout for balance including into long-lasting finish. Palate is refreshing light-to-medium body with thin, slightly creamy texture and average carbonation. Overall, above average appearance and palate but won’t knock your socks off. Very interesting aroma with some of that complexity translating over to the taste but a little over to the bitter side for me.

Bottle. Wow! This is one of my favorite IPA’s of the last year. Sweet caramel scent with a mildly citrus hint, orange more than grapefruit. The appearance kept with the orange, a peach tint almost, with huge lacing. Beautiful. The palate was silky smooth, medium bodied, and the taste was vibrantly present although with a mild hoppiness, leaving a sugary taste on the tongue with the finish.

This should be the reference for an IPA. Tastes amazing! I wish it had better availability here in Maryland. Really nice hop balanced with the malt backbone. A joy to drink.

Good beer. Citrus, apricot, pine and honey. Finishes a bit too warm and sticky to make this a truly outstanding beer for me, but I will definitely try another one.
