San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Good beer. Citrus, apricot, pine and honey. Finishes a bit too warm and sticky to make this a truly outstanding beer for me, but I will definitely try another one.

Bottle from Mcgee Liquor in Tucson. Clear gold pour with a short white head leaving moderate lace. Nose is pine, ganja and some caramel. Medium body with moderate, fine carbonation with a creamy mouth feel. Pine, ganja, caramel, lemon and a hint of orange, pineapple and ethanol. Finish is more bitter, with grapefruit and dendelion. Nice balance for a West Coast IPA, but a bit hot. Sorry, but this one just doesn’t stand out to me.

light amber color, aroma is citrus with lots of grape fruit, flavor is citrus and grape fruit and more grape fruit, slight caramel malt sweetness with a very dry finish, my favorite IPA! amazing beer!

On cask at The Flying Saucer in Raleigh. Light gold pour with a small white head on it. It was a little undercarbonated, but not too badly. Light and fruity hop flavor, but missing a little bit of hoppy bitterness that I was expecting. Easy to drink and very tasty though!

Happy to find this after seeing it on the Zymurgy list. Aroma was pleasant hop mixture tending towards the pine/dank side. Taste was appropriately bitter and well balanced; I found the mouthfeel somewhat towards heavy/mildly syrupy. I may have had unfair expectations.

The pale gold draught came with a light head, and that’s the way I felt when I left. The aromas and flavors were more hoppy than malty but faily balanced. Full bodied and tasty.

Hazy orange with a creamy off-white head. Nose : Loads of peaches and apricot, enticing. Palate : Medium to full bodied, creamy, refreshing, great bitterness, really bold with grapefruit and tropical fruity hops in dominance. Long lingering fruity bitter finish. Amazing IPA

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2007 Holy mother of god! Had it on draft at Ballast Point Brewery. This one caught my attention big time! I am now an avid IPA fan...thank you Sculpin an Ballast Point. Very citrusy, excellent aroma and excellent taste. Very balanced beer, bitter yet fruity, taste like a combo of mangos and banannas. Very bitter begining but smooth fruity finish....mmmmmm excellent especially for a 7.0% ABV!! Wish they bottled it or at least brewed it more often, sucks when you want a growler fill but they are still fermenting it.
