COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12 oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: Orange/copper in color. Generous white head with good retention. Impressive lacing. Pretty close to ideal. Aroma: Lots of citrus on the nose. Orange, grapefruit. Peach. Some floral notes also. Really nice. Taste: Pretty dry upfront with mild bitterness in the finish. Palate: Medium/light body. Soft mouthfeel. Longer finish. Overall: This beer has a lot going for it. The aroma is fantastic. The hops profile is pretty much ideal for me. Appearance was very nice as well. The body was a little lighter than I prefer, but I know this was by design. Overall a very nice beer.

Pours a very light orange color with minimal head. Upon closer inspection there is a slight haze and I can see some extremely small particles floating around. Aroma is citrus and pine and I also detect some tropical fruits. There is a lot going on here. Taste is similar to the aroma with citrus being well represented along with some pine notes. The body is light to medium and the finish is very dry with a lingering bitterness. This would be fantastic on a hot summer day and what you would expect from a West Coast IPA. One of the better IPAs I have had.

Clear copper colour and a small white head. Aroma is dominated by hops with faint citrus in the background. Taste is incredibly soft, only slight bitterness after you have swallowed a couple of times. Rich body, super soft mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Great IPA!

Pours clear golden with clean billowing head. It dissipates gradually. Fairly thick lacing. Burgeoning juicy aroma. Exactly how I need my IPA’s. Fresh apricot, grapefruit, with a hint of lemon and floral pangs. A little dash of pine emerges as it warms. Beautiful. Taste is more apricot, a touch of citrus and some soft caramel malt. Grapefruit-rind bitterness creeps forward and punctuates the moreish medium-bitter finish. My only small qualm is the palate. It feels slightly diluted. Perhaps carbonation needs better integration. My preference is for more creamy IPA’s but the filp-side is this mouth-feel suits a more refreshing feel. Supreme drinkability nevertheless. A quality, juicy IPA. Really enjoyed it.

An amber body with a thin head. Typical IPA aroma. Nice taste. Happy I got in on tap :) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A pretty citrusy IPA. Very strong grapefruit flavor - round citrusy nose. Tastes more sour than bitter. Finishes very dry. There are plenty of hops in there...but it starts off and ends with so much citrus, that it feels like a hop cameo.

Pours slightly hazy orange with big foamy off-white head. Big bold aroma of herbal hop, ripe peach and mango. Medium carbonation and light feel. Flavor matches the aroma: herbal hop with grassy/woodsy bitterness, slightly sweet with ripe fruit, crisp malt along with slight pepperiness from the alcohol. Finishes dry with lasting grassy/piney hop bitterness, slightly soapy though.

Aroma is full of apricot and peach notes backed up by the hops. The appearance is very light golden. Taste is similar to the smell, however: the smell cannot communicate the crispness of the flavor. It is wonderfully balanced and light. It allows you to taste the hops more delicate notes due to the crisp and clean finish.
