COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12 ounce bottle poured into Duvel tulip. Pours an undistinguished golden orange color that is fairly translucent. Barely-off-white head is fluffy with relatively lengthy retention duration. Nose is green apple hops, some grainy aroma along with resinous hops, and medium amount of malty sweetness. Hint of vegetable aroma as well. Taste is piney hops on front of palate. Grain and cereal mid palate. Resinous hops on back palate. Bitter finish. Finish has short duration. Mouth feel has nice and pleasantly lively carbonation. Overall, enjoyed the hop aroma and taste, though found this IPA, generally, a bit grainy.

On tap at Dublins Downtown Los Angeles. Pours out a hazy yellowish orange witha good head. Aromas of grapefruits, California hops lemon ppeels, a pineapple that has been picked too early and roasted malts. Tastes of intense hops at first which settles into a crisp bitterness. The citrus fruit flavors adds a refreshing quality to this beer. Nicely balanced with the malt sweetness providing the backbone. This brew finishes perfectly crisp and leaves a subtle bitter taste. One of my favorite single I P A s.

22 oz Bottle from Churchill’s in San Marcos. Pours cloudy amber orange with a fluffy white head. Sweet aroma of hops and citrus. Flavor begins with sweet hops and ends with hints of lemon and orange. A very very good IPA!

This is a really great IPA. It has a lot of grapefruit on the nose. The flavor is very big but just enough muted so that the hops are not overpowering. This is a very good IPA that anyone could love.

Had this on tap 3 weeks ago, pouring from the bottle as I taste tonight. Equally enjoyable from the bottle, orange-lemon aroma that translates to a somewhat piney flavor, I’m thinking Simcoe hops in here somewhere. Clear golden color in the glass, carbonation and viscosity add up to all you’d want in an IPA, not as thick as some Imperial IPAs but approaching that slightly thicker mouthfeel. Not a "session" IPA, a bit of a palate-wrecker, so best to reserve to end of the evening or better yet, just enjoy it on a night when you’re just ready for ONE exceptional beer. Because YES this one is worth the 100-point rating, outstanding effort.

Finally in Maryland!! Been waiting a long time for this one. 22oz bomber into a craft glass. The pour is a very clear, light golden color. Aroma makes my mouth water. Peach blasts the nose right away. I get citrus and tropical notes as well. Mouth is also blasted with peach right off the line. Solid hop bitterness throughout. Nice resin character and slight dryness in the finish. Superb IPA! Now I must find a way to try AleSmith’s.
