COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Strong hoppy aroma and foretaste followed by a very malty taste that negates the hoppy bitterness. Some grassiness in the malt. Had a 6 pack and drank several before the review to try to understand the very high ratings but maybe just not my style of IPA. I am a hophead but am fine with well balanced IPAs too but I appreciate the initial hop bitterness but am not very crazy about the particular malt taste that follows in this beer. Certainly not a bad beer by any standard but for my taste not deserving the extremely high rankings.

Sampled on draught at a bar in Las Vegas. Light orange/yellow colour with a white head. Aromas of fruit, and a flavour of apricots, oranges and lemons. There is also a very dry, almost astringent taste of grapefruity hops. A nicely bitter, well-made IPA in the American style.

Strong citrus IPA smell. Pours clear orange with a white head. Flavor is all grapefruit and bitter. Light beer with average carbonation, very good!

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2009 Bomber poured into a very clean snifter, slightly chilled. Slightly tarnished brass color with streams of healthy bubbles and a casual white cap. Very tropical nose, maybe I hould have an umbrella? Mango, passion fruit, and tangello juice dominate the stage as a sweet grain peeks out from behind the curtain. Palate actually begins dry and bitter, like the skin of stone fruit. The teeth continue to drive into the meat and hop flavor resonates. The grain seems to well up from a terra haut of lush malt and adds an incredible balance to what looks like a hop bomb. This beer drips the sweet smells and warmth of a brewery with refreshments at the end of the tour. A round hop lingers in room but doesn’t f%&k with the thermostat. As good as they come. Re-rate, 8-10. The numbers stay the same. I will say that the nose has turned the volume down with a few months in the bottle. No worries, this is still an intense experience. Last time I was obviously overwhelmed by the nose and entry. The palate is very interesting. This IPA finishes with some subtlety. Carbonation finishes smooth and the hops linger like a recessing tide. Very clean, with just the spice elements of the hops lingering. Interesting. This must be a seriously dry hopped beer.

Bright gold pour with a thin white head that left a few spots of lacing. Bready aroma with a lot of pine and citrus hops, which lean more towards lemon and grapefruit. Flavor is very lemony, somewhat doughy, with a sharp pine bite. Light and crisp, pretty refreshing. Well carbonated. Lingering bitter finish that seems slightly abrasive. A good beer, no doubt, but I’m having trouble trying to figure out why this is highly rated. For the trouble you have to go through to get it, I’d rather have Pliny, or even Blind Pig.

Bomber poured into pint glasses. Pours a clear amber color with a nice white head and solid lacing through the glass. Smell is resin, pine, a bit of grapefruit, and slight alcohol. Taste is again with the resin, juicy grapefruit, and again with the alcohol. Slightly oily finish, but still enjoyable. Note: there were 2 enjoy by dates on the bottle, so this quite possibly could be older. EDIT: had a second bottle with and enjoy by date of 07/11/13 and was much better.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. Aroma is dank, sweet tropical fruit, some malt, delicious. Appearance is gold-orange, opaque, white head. Taste is bitter, lemon tea flavor, bitter hops, piny, balanced. Mouthfeel is decent, crisp, decent carbonation, not too bad. Overall, it’s pretty good but I expected more.

Bottle (22 ounce): Clear, golden with a hint of copper and a thick head. Huge lift of fresh hops. Lantana, citrus, pine. Very fresh. Green but rich.. Dry to off dry. Medium to medium high bitterness. Not sour. Rich, very fresh. Great weight and length. Bitterness is balanced by flavor. Tropical, citrus, pine hop flavors with malt to match. Intense west coast IPA but as balanced as they come. Intense but lovely beer.

Bottle poured a light copper with orange hues, large white head, and excellent lacing. Huge citrus and piney resiny hops aroma flow from the glass before apricot and tropical fruits reveal themselves. Taste begins with citrus zest and tropical fruits and then palatable hop bitterness takes over leading to a smooth crisp finish. Nice active carbonation, good mouthfeel, and flavors linger on the palate long after each sip. Solid IPA.
