San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours slightly hazy orange with big foamy off-white head. Big bold aroma of herbal hop, ripe peach and mango. Medium carbonation and light feel. Flavor matches the aroma: herbal hop with grassy/woodsy bitterness, slightly sweet with ripe fruit, crisp malt along with slight pepperiness from the alcohol. Finishes dry with lasting grassy/piney hop bitterness, slightly soapy though.

My my my..... I could smell this thing all day. Unbelievable. I wish it tasted as good as it smells. Flavor is still good however a slight letdown compared to the aroma. Very easy on the palate and one 12 oz bottle out of the 6’er disappears very quick, almost too quick. A very easy drinking IPA. Flavor is good, a little too resiny on my opinion and a slightly off aftertaste but good nonetheless. Gonna knock it down a notch or two overall simply because while it is a very good IPA for the price I’m paying for this 6 pack(recently available in GA) I expect to be blown away. Way overpriced. A great beer yes, but in a field filled with numerous solid IPA’s the price is just a little too steep. A great beer nonetheless.

Aroma is full of apricot and peach notes backed up by the hops. The appearance is very light golden. Taste is similar to the smell, however: the smell cannot communicate the crispness of the flavor. It is wonderfully balanced and light. It allows you to taste the hops more delicate notes due to the crisp and clean finish.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2011 Pint from my pal Jess down at the Local 4th and broadway SD.. The pour is typical ballast point,,, a little lighter in shade than some others but enough murkiness to let me know there is something behind the veil. The aroma is powerful.. Its deep robust experienced hops.. and the first hit to the palate is that of an impecably constructed ipa, hops yes, powerful yes.. Pine, bitter hops, but the surprise is how smooth this thing is on the afterbite.. I think its neck and neck with the Alesmith, or even nose to nose.. Now thats a heavy weight fight worth ordering.. Well down ballast point.. Oh and by the way.. the coolest name for a beer.> EVER!!

Wow. I thought I had some great ipa’s but this one takes the cake! Citrus grapefruit aroma. Perfectly balanced hop bitterness and grapefruit sweetness. The bitterness hangs around as an aftertaste a little bit longer than the grapefruit but isn’t unpleasant. Usually cans are associates with cheaper generic beer but this one tosses out that assumption.

Bottle. Would love to have this on tap from the brewery, but that’s not possible in Australia. Ok IPA, great body and tastes a bit like a nice earl grey tea mixed with an IPA, but most of the aroma hasn’t survived the trip to Australia (I presume). Not as good as some of the local IPA’s I’ve tried.

On tap, BrewDog Edinburgh. A fantastic IPA. Dark yellow/golden in colour, sweet pine and grapefruit aroma, taste is sweet, bitter, hoppy and delicious. A fantastically balanced beer.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2011 22oz bottle. Pours golden copper and a nice fluffy head. Amazing scent of mangoes and guava. I was ultimately disappointed with this beer, however, as the taste of this did not match the expectations provided by the aroma. There is a sweet bitterness here that I wish was featured a bit more, and there is definitely no "sting" that supposedly earned this beer its’ name.
