San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle with Nate. Gold with white head. West coast hoppy, citrusy and bitter. Lasting finish, decent body.

A great straw colored IPA with thin and quickly dissipating head. Nose and flavor do not disappoint with great hoppy bite in some of the more floral hop varieties. Malts still come through cleanly, making this a great drinkable beer, but perhaps lacks some of the depth or interest of other iPAs. Nonetheless, Ballast Point has a great brew here with durability through the seasons, with enough character for fall and a clean and effervescent mouthfeel to deliver through the summer. Cheers! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is pineapple peach hops. Looks refreshing with a nice tight head. This beer is amazing! Great hop flavor though not super bitter. I will drink this again for sure.

Medium, fresh aroma with sweet fruits, grapefruit and some caramel. Light orange with a it hazy liquid. Minimal white head. Medium/strong taste with fruits (not as sweet as the aroma suggested), peach, citrus, some pine. Also malts and quite a bit of hops. Very balanced with wide taste spectrum and medium, hoppy and malty aftertaste. Medium/light body with medium carbonation. A top-notch, schoolbook-like IPA. Could have a bit stronger taste and more individual character.

Pours a cloudy gold with typical lace. Lots of sweet orange on the nose, very nice. Taste? Well, maybe mine is a tad stale from being on the shelf for a bit, but I’m not seeing where this beer’s legendary status comes from. I get a fair amount of juicy orange, which I like, but it doesn’t have the biggest bite and there’s a funky aftertaste I can’t quite place. A good one for sure, but it wouldn’t make my personal IPA top-10.

Slightly hazy, amber liquid with a big white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Very fruity aroma, citrus and tropical fruits with a hint of caramel in the background. The taste is distinctly bitter with a little more caramel then on the nose. Long bitter aftertaste Medium to low carbonation with tiny bubbles, decent mouthfeel. Very, very good even if this bottle was a tad old.

Pours golden with decent sized white head. Nice citrusy hop aroma. Pleasant and nicely balanced hop flavor. A good IPA, but frankly it doesn’t stand out. I was expecting more based on the high scores.

On draft at Ballast Point. My 100 on rate beer and reasonably so! The best IPA out there! Insane hoppy aroma with a pungent, piney palate. One of the GOATs!

Pours a very light orange color with minimal head. Upon closer inspection there is a slight haze and I can see some extremely small particles floating around. Aroma is citrus and pine and I also detect some tropical fruits. There is a lot going on here. Taste is similar to the aroma with citrus being well represented along with some pine notes. The body is light to medium and the finish is very dry with a lingering bitterness. This would be fantastic on a hot summer day and what you would expect from a West Coast IPA. One of the better IPAs I have had.

Toronado, San Diego. Orange amber pour. Bountiful head. Dry hop aroma that doesn't overpower. Classic grapefruit and pine on the front end. A surprising hint of lemon to spice things up.
