San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Best aroma Iíve had since Hopslam. Big grapefruit bitterness and piney hops. The foam is filmy and clustery, like sea foam. Nice oily finish. Really good, I hate Iím heading home away from this!

Glad sculpin is hitting a wider distribution network. Pours a see through golden orange with a lacing thin white head. Aromas of huge citrus, lemon, apricot, slight grass. Similar flavors with almost a bubblegum finish. Hoppy with a dry finish. Excellent ipa.

I enjoyed this one, but it was different than i expected. cloudy appearance. has a very apricot/peachy sweet flavor with a big load of dry hop in the finish. i think its just personal taste, because obviously this is a well made beer, but i prefer my IPAs more on the bitter and dry end of the spectrum while this one is more bright and zingy while still having some IBUs. I will have to revisit someday, as iíve only had one 22oz bomber, but as it stands I prefer their Big Eye to this one.

From a 22 ounce bottle into a frosted pint glass. Harsh hoppy bitterness follows this from aroma to first sip to aftertaste. Excellent. I get pine and citrus (grapefruit) together. I find it easy to drink.

Strong citrus bitter hop nose. Gold amber, with a small head and great lacing. A little syrupy. Tart acidity undertones

355 ml, bottle conditioned. Golden amber, thin beige head, lively carbonation. Aroma is citrusy and bready. Medium mouthfeel, long aftertaste. Flavourwise, I think the hops have died down a bit. The bottle may be a bit old, and has lost some of its former glory. The sample for this rating is not a world class beer.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2015 12oz can with 11/5/15 code date. Appearance: Golden and slightly hazy, with a thick white foam cap. Aroma: Intense mix of melon, grapefruit, pineapple, grass, and resin. Taste: Light bready malt that quickly turns to sharp bitterness and dank, resinous, earthy hop flavors. Grapefruit and grassiness is there, but very low. Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with a medium-high carbonation Finish: Seems to balance well on the finish, with only a slight lingering bitterness. It does leave a sticky resin on the tongue. Overall: Well done west coast IPA that has a great aroma, with a dominant hop bitterness that doesnít overpower thru the finish. Fairly light malt base that letís the hops shine but still remains balanced.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2015 Deep golden pour with frothy head, Iíve read a lot of mention that the hops deteriorate quickly in this one, so Iíll need to revisit. Initial impression was nonplussed. Hops had a slightly skunky aroma amonst citruses which followed into the flavor. Maybe just not my style (west coast) as there are more strongly hopped IPAs out there that I love.

Pours a beautiful gold color and has some lacing, but minimal head retention. This beer smells floral and hoppy. It does not disappoint in the least. An amazing beer, and one that is absolutely legendary for a reason. Excellent!
