San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12 oz bottle from New Seasons - Golden orange with a white head. Aromas of citrus, perhaps a little peach. Great balance between the bitter hops and enough malt backbone to keep it interesting. This is a really good beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tumbler on 11.03.14. A: Orange. Maybe honey malt. It smells sweet, but itís not a very strong smelling IPA. A: 1/2 finger head with a moderate pour. Hazy pale orange body. T: Orange, tropical fruit, and honey malt dominate. Pine, lemon, and biscuity malt are subtle. P: Crisp with bubbles on the back end. O: This is in the San Diego style, obviously, but itís a well-balanced IPA. It has a subtle piney bite on the back end. Overall, itís not very strong, but it might make a good entry IPA. Stone IPA is similar but seems to have a stronger kick to it as itís more hop forward.

Floral aroma with notes of lychee and grapefruit. Clear amber colour. Bitter front with notes of citrus and malt. Medium body with lively carbonation. A very tasty brew.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a Duvel tulip. Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger foamy white head. Excellent lacing. Smell: Pine and grapefruit with subtle notes of orange, tangerine, mango and pineapple. Smells amazing. Probably the best IPA aroma Iíve ever smelled. Taste: Pink grapefruit up front followed by orange and lemon in the middle then ending with resinous pine at the finish. There is a hint of caramel malt in the background. Aftertaste is a mix of bitter lemon peel, pink grapefruit and fresh orange. The taste doesnít feature much of the sweetness that I expected coming from the aroma. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Goes down very smooth. Hops are very sticky. Drinkability: High drinkability. After finishing a bomber, I could see coming back for seconds. Overall: Excellent IPA overall. This is a must try for any hop head. Iíll definitely be buying more once we get a distributor down here in Fort Myers.

Aroma fake orange, Appearance orange, clear, white foam, Taste light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium bitterness, Palate medium body, Overall to me there is a unnatural orange flavor that is not doing it for me. I am a fan of the grapefruit and pineapple but not this one. I would not suggest this beer to a friend.
