COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Smell: Ruby Red Grapefruit, orange, citrus rind, and a touch of pine. Hints of tropical fruit. Pineapple makes a big appearance as it warms. Just a slight touch of booze. Very inviting. Taste: Lots of sweet grapefruit up front, but remains present throughout. Wave of hop bitterness and big pine comes next, with a finish that reminds me of biting into bitter grapefruit rind. Oily bitterness and dryness lingers afterward.

Ballast Point Sculpin, 22oz bomber picked up at Liquor Outlet Wine Cellar. Pours beautiful hazy orange color with large white head in shaker. Head sticks to glass nicely. Great aroma of grapefruit and hops. Super citrus flavor, clean malt base. Light, smooth and silky. Very drinkable, this is a superb brew. I was worried that the bottle may not be fresh but that was put to rest the moment I open the bottle and poured it. It smelled excellent before I could even get my nose near the glass.

Good citrus and spice hop balance. Heavy body and excellent mouth feel. Good piney aftertaste.

Aroma: Beautiful aroma, smells of orange, lemons, apples maybe, a little hoppiness at the end, pineapple, amazing. Appearance: Really nice, lacing is excellent, head is small but that could have been a subpar pour, continuous bubbling almost like Champagne, and a murky orange coloring. Taste: Hmm, surprising, a little watery actually, but maybe thats just the lack of hops, itís definitly light, and the aroma doesnít come out as much in the taste. Palate: Nice, the bittery hops stay on the palate for a while and it has a strong feeling as it goes down. Overall: Iím a little surprised, it seemed like a homerun in the beginning but actually felt a little watered down, maybe too light for my tastes. Definitely worth a buy though.

Had at Brewzilla during Cleveland Beer Week. Floral and citrus notes, just the right amount of bitterness. Finished nicely, very solid IPA.

Color is orange hued with frothy white head. Smells of tropical fruits, lupilin and a bit of sweetness. Palate is medium to light with a complexity and layering to the flavor profile. Beautifully done, one well worth seeking out!

I think this is a fine IPA but doesnít really stand out in any one way to me. A bit expensive too

very nice IPA, has a strong grapefruit presence and a nice bite, all while having a nice clean finish that has you sipping for more

Ballast point nails it again. As soon as I cracked the bottle open, the hops made their presence. Earthy hops dominate the front of the palate while fruity hops and the malts take over on the back end. Great stuff.

Great tasting IPA. Very smooth with a very nice dry finish. Doesn't finish too dry. One of the better IPAs I have had. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
