COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

From a bottle. Pours a dark golden orange with a thick white head that dissipates. Aroma is rather muted but is well balanced with hops, citrus and other fruits and a hint grass. Taste is well balanced with citrus up front. Do I taste a hint of caramel from the malt? Perhaps that is the mango and other fruits but it is a nice middle tone to balance out the citrus and hops. Middle is a bit of hop and a crisp and clean finish. Palate is citrus/grass followed by hops and a nice finish.

Pour is a transparent straw color that is surprisingly light and clear. Nose, however, is lively with wonderful hoppiness that is full of citrus and dried fruit. Palate is medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Flavor is very enjoyable and intensely dry with lots of puckering fruitiness. A very nice and tart as hell IPA that has an abundance of flavor with a relatively low ABV.

This is a tremendous little IPA from BP. One I didn’t know much about prior to the GBBF ’11. Pours very pale golden, looks like a blond beer. Nice one finger bright whit head with average retention and decent lacing. Aroma is pretty knock out stuff, big tropical aromas of passion fruit and mango with a heavy resinous and slightly spicy character, real earthy in the background, but very fruity at the same time. Nice touch of a honeyed note to keep a balance to the earthy hop/tropical hops. Flavour is so incredibly crisp for the style, I was expecting mouth coating San Diego style IPA, but no, it’s almost Pilsner in feel but with massive flavour, Incredibly crisp and refreshing, it opens with citrus and peach, moves to a slightly honeyed cereal note in the mids and out of nowhere comes some note worthy bitterness which takes you in to a great highly aromatic finish with grapefruit bitterness, orange, perfume and highly floral notes. Oddly enough the characteristic I love most about this is also the only gripe I’d have: I want more body, but yet at the same time I’m blown away by the crisp drinkablity of the beer, so do I need more body? It just drinks like it were 4.5-5% rather than 7% It’s a real master class in how to make a light crisp and ultimately highly refreshing IPA but pack in as much flavour without it becoming cloying or oily. Brilliant stuff.

Amazing, the smell of hops knocks you off your feet. Couldnt believe it when I took a wiff. My friend got a growler filled with this and gave me some. Truly a great beer. Nice and bitter, but not to bitter, hoppy taste and aroma really make this a great beer.

Served from bottle into a Spaten mug. Pours a nice golden color with a two finger frothy head that subsides to one finger slowly. Maintains nice lacing throughout. The aroma is comprised of an excellent sweet hop note. The flavor is of pine, spicy hops, and a hint of malt. It has medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this is the second time I have had this brew but the last time was prior to reviewing brews. I am glad I was able to get my hands on it again so I could relive my previous experience. You NEED to try this one if you are an IPA fan. No excuses... Believe the hype.

Shockingly good for an ipa. Bitter aftertaste. Commoner in the ipa style category. Lacks standout character. Pretty street. Commoner. Just like everyone else's. Why not standout from the pack? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a bomber with no noticeable date on it. Aroma - tropical, sweet, almost peppery Appearance - crystal clear light golden color Taste - Very nice....very smooth with a great bite at the back of the tongue which I like. Palate - Great lingering taste. Overall - I can see why this beer gets such high ratings, it is a top notch beer. Can’t believe I waited so long to have it.

Drank ice cold from a bottle. Great hoppy citrus aroma. Fruity light flavour with a generous dose of hops. Really nice and refreshing.

Clear brassy pour. Massive rocky white head with tons of chunky lacing. Apricot and resin in the nose with just a wisp of pale malt. Medium mouthfeel. Just enough carbonation to carry the nose, but not so much it gets fizzy. Peach, apricot, honeydew rind, and whole lemon in the middle, followed by a touch of honey, bready malt, and lingering pine. Delicious.
