San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Crystal clear golden in color with moderate amount of head. Aroma is dominated by fruity hops. Lots of tropical fruit in the nose and in the taste followed by a hint of malt sweetness. Great balance between bitterness, malt sweetness, and hop character. Currently my favorite IPA.

Draught/Growler. Took one taste to know this would be good. Enjoying the great floral and citrus flavor, grapefruit. Delicious.

Amber in color, with small white head. Sweet aroma, lots of peach, pine and hop notes. A lighter IPA, taste of hops and peaches primarily with bread and citrus notes as well. A great beer and a cool example of the range of the IPA style.

Wow, wow, wow. I’ve always been a fan of Ballast Point’s Big Eye IPA, but Sculpin takes it to a whole different level. Aroma lets you know you’re in for a hoppy ride with some sweet grapefruit notes. Pours a clean, light golden color with a standard IPA one finger, quickly dissipating head. This tasty glass of hops doesn’t make sweet love to your palate, it smashes like two kids on prom night, drunk off cheap schnapps. Sweet, then bitter, then sweet again. Sculpin is intense and delicious at the same time. I gave my wife one sip of this and she said quote "I feel like it bit my mouth"...nuff said.

From a growler. Golden with nice head. Tropical fruit flavors. Not a hoppy as I expected. Very enjoyable.

Fantastic beer. Better than expected. Well balanced maltiness with bitterness. I will try and clone this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is mildly sweet floral, fruit, citrus, hops medium. this smells delicious. nice white head with lite lacing as it breaks up. A lite clear golden amber. small amount of tiny bubble rising up. Taste is not close to the smell. hops up front are balanced nicely with malts. The fruit, citrus sweetness is more buried than expected. Lite body to the palate not too much carbonation that holds up start to finish. Goes down easy with just enough mix of hops, malts, sweetness, bubbles to keep it interesting. Mild alcohol warmth in finish. A good brew I’d have again

Pours a golden clear with thick off white head off draft. Smells amazing...like the perfect rippened oranges and mangos. Starts very sweet with lots of citrus sweet notes. Ends quite dry.

From 12oz bottle. Pours clear golden color with a big white head. There’s a big hit of tropical fruits at the nose, a really inviting smell. The taste starts off the same, with flavors of mango, apricot, and some grapefruit. Then at the end you get the hoppy bitterness to balance it off. Really great beer, probably the best tasting IPA I’ve had.
