San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Glad sculpin is hitting a wider distribution network. Pours a see through golden orange with a lacing thin white head. Aromas of huge citrus, lemon, apricot, slight grass. Similar flavors with almost a bubblegum finish. Hoppy with a dry finish. Excellent ipa.

Bottle. Amber, small off-white head. Aroma malts, citruses, hops. Taste first sweet, tropical fruits mix, then turning into a nice long happy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Orange beer with a medium foamy white head that is actually pretty dense. Citrusy nose with grapefruit, orange, peach, and pear. Flavor has a bracing hop bite with some bright fruit notes reminiscent of the nose with the addition of some pine resin and pith, but overall it’s not really that bitter for an IPA. I would have liked a little more prominent malt profile to balance it out a bit. Still, it’s a refreshing, drinkable beer that is certainly worth your time.

Pours a bright golden hue almost resembling a lager. Aroma is unique. I get lemon, melons, and a decent amount of booziness. It smells really fresh. The body on this beer is very light making it dangerously drinkable. Tropical citrus notes and a crisp finish with warming alcohol all the way through. Similar style to Pliny yet its own entity, really enjoyable and fresh.

22 oz bottle. Aroma: citrusy and resinous. Taste/Palate: starts creamy and sweet, and finishes crisp and bitter. Perfect malt/hop balance. Perfect beer.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2015 Deep golden pour with frothy head, I’ve read a lot of mention that the hops deteriorate quickly in this one, so I’ll need to revisit. Initial impression was nonplussed. Hops had a slightly skunky aroma amonst citruses which followed into the flavor. Maybe just not my style (west coast) as there are more strongly hopped IPAs out there that I love.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 This coulda been a contender, if not for the onions. Awfully nice citrus and perfume on the nose, and then onion. No one else will really notice, but it’s there. Otherwise, excellent. Re-rate: The onions are milder this time. But I still don’t understand the hype. I like their Big Eye better.
