San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA Pours golden with a medium white head and good retention. Oily appearance. Aroma is grassy and floral with citrus undertones. Very nice smell. Flavor is grassy hops and alcohol with some light sweetness to offset the bitter. Grapefruit like citrus character with some light malt notes. Good shit.

Bottle. Pours a orange hue with a nice off white head. Aroma is citrus with orange, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Sweet maltiness aroma comes through as well. Excellent tasting IPA with a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Finishes with a nice grapefruit flavor on the tongue. The palate is smooth with the right amount of carbonation, not crisp but it doesn’t need to be. Somewhat sweet but hoppy IPA. An excellent choice for a nightcap beer.

Orange-amber pour with a two-fingered, frothy white head. Very sticky lace. Awesome hops blast up front with fresh squeezed grapefruit and pine juice. Flavors of lemon pith, ruby red grapefruit, pineapple and pine resin. A good portion of caramel malt for a complimentary backbone. Good body, nice balance with a strong, lingering, bitter finish. This brews most significant feature is its freshness. Not bad at all.

Aroma: fruity, very faint hops; Appearance: straw colored, clear with thin head and some lacing; Taste: acceptable but not much personality; not particularly bitter; not complex; Palate: finish a bit better - long, dry, more bitter; Overall: okay. Would drink if available but not seek out.

Orange beer with a medium foamy white head that is actually pretty dense. Citrusy nose with grapefruit, orange, peach, and pear. Flavor has a bracing hop bite with some bright fruit notes reminiscent of the nose with the addition of some pine resin and pith, but overall it’s not really that bitter for an IPA. I would have liked a little more prominent malt profile to balance it out a bit. Still, it’s a refreshing, drinkable beer that is certainly worth your time.

A very well made west coast IPA with a clean finish. This is definitely a floral IPA with more of a citrus aroma than pine cone, similar to a better tasting Bridgeport IPA. However, the palate is a little empty leading a finish that leaves you wanting for something more. This makes for a good sessionable IPA although the ABV is a little high (and the ABV is masked very well!). While not an epic beer, I would definitely recommend this beer for casual drinking or a sample if you haven’t had it before.
