San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

It pours amber with an off-white head and lacing. The aroma is hops and citrus. The taste is floral hops, apricot, and grapefruit. Itís dry with a nice balance of bitterness and fruit. This is definitely a very good IPA. I think it fell a bit short of the hype. Itís definitely quality though.

355ml bottle into a tulip glass; served cold. Aroma: Lots of grapefruit and lemony hops. Zesty and bright for sure. Appearance: Clear, amber-yellow body with a dissipating white head. Nice lacing, though! Taste: Loads of citrusy hops with just a little bit of pine/resin bite. Malt is pretty mild; this one is all hop. Palate: Medium body, moderate prickly carbonation, and a long bitter finish. Overall: A very, very nice IPA. Great hop-forward beer, classic west-coast flavors.

Strong hoppy aroma and foretaste followed by a very malty taste that negates the hoppy bitterness. Some grassiness in the malt. Had a 6 pack and drank several before the review to try to understand the very high ratings but maybe just not my style of IPA. I am a hophead but am fine with well balanced IPAs too but I appreciate the initial hop bitterness but am not very crazy about the particular malt taste that follows in this beer. Certainly not a bad beer by any standard but for my taste not deserving the extremely high rankings.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear gold color with a finger-thick white head. Aroma is strong fruit - mango and apricot. Medium body, taste leans more to the hops but isnít overpowering, balanced well. Finish is a little dry with more of the fruit character coming through. Well done!

On tap, Finley's Pub, Denver. Pour is a nice Amber/orange, thin white head. Nose is big hop, big citrus, resin, floral. Taste is bitter, medium bodied. Finished very dry on your palate, but still a full bodied taste. Nice IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2015 Deep golden pour with frothy head, Iíve read a lot of mention that the hops deteriorate quickly in this one, so Iíll need to revisit. Initial impression was nonplussed. Hops had a slightly skunky aroma amonst citruses which followed into the flavor. Maybe just not my style (west coast) as there are more strongly hopped IPAs out there that I love.

Glad sculpin is hitting a wider distribution network. Pours a see through golden orange with a lacing thin white head. Aromas of huge citrus, lemon, apricot, slight grass. Similar flavors with almost a bubblegum finish. Hoppy with a dry finish. Excellent ipa.

Bottle. Amber, small off-white head. Aroma malts, citruses, hops. Taste first sweet, tropical fruits mix, then turning into a nice long happy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I donít drink much IPA because I usually find it too bitter and hoppy but I really like Sculpin. I have been going to Home Brew Mart since the late 90ís and have overall been impressed with their beers. This one has the characteristic grapefruit hop flavor but is much more balanced than most IPAís I have had. It is also refreshing and easy to drink. Has complex fruity, floral, and resin aromas, with a good balance of sweet and bitter in the flavor. This is one of the best San Diego style IPAís out there in my opinion.
