San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

From 355 ml in a tulip glass. Pour is clear orange with a frothy thick white head. Lots of floral and herbal hops in the nose. Tropical fruits dominate with passion fruit, lemon and grapefruit notes. Light bread notes. Taste is lots of fruit flavours with a medium but long lasting bitterness. Hints of bubblegum and very light malt sweetness. Pretty light body for an IPA! Well balanced! Great representation of an West Coast IPA, but not my favourite.

Slightly hazy, light golden-yellow. Smell is rich tropical fruit, mango, peach, apricot, fresh tangerine. Taste is fresh orange peels, hints of tangerine fruit, sweet, some earth tones, bitter vegetable hop flavor. Light body, long bitter finish.

22oz. Bomber. A little lighter color than expected would call it something similar to straw colored with a quickly disspearing white head. Crazy big nose that seems to be dominated by amarillo hops. Heavily tropical with hints of peach, mango and even a little melon. Flavor is similar with a strong grapefruit presence and a caramel note that is backed by a nice bitter streak that hits late. The malt is definitely there, but a bit understated to let the hops stand out. Mouthfeel is slightly thin, but not watery. Ends with a lingering bitterness and a touch of resin. Teetering on the border of a 2IPA. Impressive.

Can. Copper pour with small head. Aroma leans towards fruity and earthy hops. Taste is fruity, earthy and grassy. Bitterness is moderate. Decent IPA which fells short from the bests of its class.

Pours slightly darker than straw-colored with a large white head. There’s definitely orange and cat piss in the nose. I swear I smell marijuana, too. Bizarre. This would be a great summertime IPA because it is so refreshing. Lots of citrus on the palate, with flavors of orange and grapefruit. It’s not particularly dry and there’s just a small bit of sweetness on the tale end. Really great beer, but the hype seems a bit over the top.

On tap at Capone’s on 5/29/2010. Pale yellow, mostly transparent with a bit of head. Aroma has lots of clean pinecone hops, very similar to PTE, but a bit less dry. Flavor has lots of pinecone hops, good bitterness, some flowery and herbal character. A faint vegetal astringency and a touch of sweetness are all that separate it from PTE. Good carbonation and mouthfeel, hoppy bitterness finishes it nicely.

Near clear straw colour pour. Small lasting light beige head. Sadly it is clear right away that this is an old bottle.. I can see that this was great once but it has become a malty Sculpin I’m afraid... I get some fruity hops on the nose but a pretty malty base on the palate. Potentially a much higher rating but have to settle for 3.8 now. I’ll be back. I hope.

Light orange, a little hazy, and a little more than a finger of white head. Awesome sweet fruit aroma of peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, orange. Taste has a nice shot of bitterness on the tongue and then the fruity hops take over. It’s near perfect on the palate, light on the malt and hop forward. Great IPA!
