COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Very solid IPA golden slightly cloudy appearance, thumbs width head at pour, tastes of slight hops and citrus which comes off as a grapefruit flavor but doesn’t overpower like some I’ve had with that grapefruit taste.

One of the cleanest IPA’s on the market. Bottle pours a white fluffy head that sticks around for a bit, and laces well. The flavor is citrus fruit followed with a crisp hop finish. For a 7% ABV IPA this beer drinks like a session beer. It has great drinkability and will kick your d!#k in the dirt if you drink too many. Believe the hype and go buy a six pack.

Near perfect beer. Nose is super citrusy, grapefruit and some sweeter orange too. Taste is citrus hops, a touch of bitter peel, and more of a malt backbone than I expected. I know people are putting hoppier, higher abv IPA’s out there, but this one is just perfect.

Bottle. Pours a fairly clear golden-yellow with a thick white head. Considerable hop and citrus aromas. Citrus, spice, and floral hop tastes make way for a very long, bitter finish, although the flavors continue to resonate long after the beer has passed down the gullet. Very delicious, although I prefer the balance of their Big Eye. Not sure it lives all the way up to the "100/100" label, but easily one of the better IPAs I have tried.

Pours a clear caramel with a light foamy head. Strong aroma of grains and a hops. Very light and dry, with distinct aftertaste of grains and hops that is not to bitter. More drinkable than other IPA,s of its kind with a brighter crisp taste instead of a harsh earthiness. It almost has a fruity taste as you keep drinking, a menagerie of flavors but none of them fading to a flat aftertaste, it doesn’t leave much of a bitterness in your palate like "other" IPA,s. Its damn good and drinkable.

Awesome to see that Ballast Point’s Sculpin is starting to get the attention it deserves. A well balanced IPA combining some light fruit notes with well-rounded hop base.

Pours orange/golden. Aroma is one of the best ever in my opinion. Apricots orange jelly come to mind. Flavor was a bit too much citrus at first, but as I come back to it, I think it opens up as it warms. I liken it to grapefuit with a bit of sugar. Finish is nice a lingering with a bit of a hop bite. Very well done.

One of my favorite IPAs, i would really like to use this site to track my personal beer thoughts, this character count limit is sometimes annoying

UPDATED: APR 26, 2012 Fantastic ipa, ... pine, citrus, bready goodness. Lingering smooth bitterness. Quenching and easy to drink.
