COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle poured into a Pint glass Standard pour, two finger off white head. Deep copper, darker than most IPAs Iíve had, with light but lively carbonation and little opacity. The head takes itís time to settle back in. Beautiful aroma of grapefruit, with citrusy and floral notes. Well balanced taste, with the bitterness biting first, followed by a pleasant sweetness. Grapefruit and sugar. Medium bodied. While the balance is great, I prefer a bit more bitterness in my IPAs. This would be wonderful for someone who likes them with more sweetness. No bottling date, perhaps the hops have faded? Iíll be sure to try this again when I find it on draft, for now itís an enjoyable IPA, but doesnít find itís way to the podium of those Iíve experienced.

Man, this beer is SO over rated. I donít understand the hype behind it. It tastes very similar to a Lagunitas IPA, yet at TWICE THE PRICE! WHAT?! Frankly, if youíre that curious, buy a 22oz bottle. I wouldnít shell out $16 for a six pack. That was one of the most retarded purchase of my life. If it was closer to $10, I probably would have rated this better.

Very bitter. Good aroma and appearance. Something off putting about this beer. Not a favorite for me in the IPA category. Also, extremely expensive. Not recommended.

Very good west coast IPA. Its what you expect with the style. Hops and fruit taste come together very nicely.

Gorgeous golden ale with beautiful white head. Perfect balance of sweet hoppy citrus at the front end with nice punchy bitter on the back end. (22oz Bottle / Walnut Liquorette, Walnut, CA / March 2012)

Beautiful sunset orange color, two finger head; aroma is mango, peach, lemon, grape, and some pineapples, but follows up with an abrupt metallic taste and nuts; lively carbonation with an oily texture, dry bitter herby finish

Draft at yard house. Thin white head, good lacing. Not a lot of aroma, but big hop flavor. Citrus pine, and evenly balanced malt on the tongue. Good, average IPA.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2014 12 oz bottle. Starts off with a grapefruity nose, that settles down to a pleasing maltiness with a slight banana-butterscotch ester. Yeasty haze in the glass. Balanced bitter and sweetness. Pleasant bitter finish. Itís a good one. A citrusy-hoppy pale ale rounded out with the right amount of maltiness.

A little hazy. Small head that vanishes fast. Aroma of passionfruit, pine, citrus, honey. Tastes as it smells.Powerfull lingering bitterness with fruit and alcohol. Nice but not more than that.

One of the perfect examples of an IPA. Aroma, taste, color, and palate all shine in unison. Grapefuits, lemons, hops, and crystal malt come through and leave you wanting more. My review: http://beerhatesme.blogspot.com/2012/03/ballast-po
