San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

This is my second tasting of this beer. First time was in Las Vegas at the Freakin Frog. This time was in Sweden from Systembolaget (Oct 4. 2013). Aroma is citrus and hops. Quite light and fresh. Color is light amber and a 2-3 cm fading head. Taste is good. Lots of mango, citrus, tropical fruits. Very nice. Quite light on the malty side. Some sweetness and a rather strong bitter finish. Just a little to bitter to find the perfect balance in my opinion. This is a very good beer, but there are better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strong smell of citrus hops aroma of this beer is fantastic. Medium head and body. Taste reminds me of a Bells two hearted lots of floral hops with a nice bettering balance. Very sticky hop pallet. I would say the 7% abv is not well hidden if I was looking for a way to find the down side to this one. Very nice IPA

Gorgeous light orange color with about a finger’s worth of head that just sticks to the glass. On the nose, Groves of fresh orange, apricot and mango. Awesome west coast style. Delicious hop bitterness. You get a lot of the citrus with a splash of malt to balance it out. Just a really nice, crisp beer. World Class

Pine, citrus--strong and very bold for an IPA. Heavy finish. Hops fruity veering toward cloying without ever crossing over.

Rich aroma of orange peel, malt, bread, a little pine or rosemary. Appearance is a clear, burnt orange, minimal head that laces on the glass. Somewhat viscous body that slides over the tongue, leaving it’s rich taste behind to linger in a long finish. Lively but soft carbonation. A nice balance of rich body, slight sweet notes of currant, with an exploding carbonated dry bitterness A long, dry finish turns from slightly sweet to strong, dry bitter, leaving a clean lingering taste that lasts.

12oz bottle at ballast point. Pours thin with a finger of head. Head disappears pretty fast. Golden yellow appearance small steady bubbles. Taste definitely has bite. Hops, citrus, grapefruit, with a slight alcohol taste. Piney on the back end. Pallet is light and somewhat smooth. Overall great beer. I wish this was easily attainable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
