San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours a hazy gold with nice big white head. Aroma is awesome with some fruit, caramel and pine notes. Taste is very hoppy yet a bit sweet with some grapefruit and pine as well. Palate is nice and has decent carbonation. Overall, i really enjoy this IPA, it is a bit on the citrusy side and is really bright with a long finish.

Pours clear amber with minimal head. Good hoppy aroma. Good mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Flavor is piney, slightly sweet with a biting bitterness at the end. Overall a good textbook IPA.

To date my favorite ipa when fresh. I say when fresh cause we hardly ever get it fresh in NJ. When fresh the bitter, flavor, aroma combo is near perfect. As it ages the bitterness starts to become to much ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wonderful aroma of caramel and a subtle but profound hoppyness. Quite balanced but nothing to write home about. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

9/21/13 Butcher and the Boar, Downtown Minneapolis. Aroma of hops. Light copper in color. Starts smooth and finishes hoppy. Probably not hoppy enough for hopheads but all I taste is hops. OK at best . ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle poured into a Pint glass Standard pour, two finger off white head. Deep copper, darker than most IPAs I’ve had, with light but lively carbonation and little opacity. The head takes it’s time to settle back in. Beautiful aroma of grapefruit, with citrusy and floral notes. Well balanced taste, with the bitterness biting first, followed by a pleasant sweetness. Grapefruit and sugar. Medium bodied. While the balance is great, I prefer a bit more bitterness in my IPAs. This would be wonderful for someone who likes them with more sweetness. No bottling date, perhaps the hops have faded? I’ll be sure to try this again when I find it on draft, for now it’s an enjoyable IPA, but doesn’t find it’s way to the podium of those I’ve experienced.

Man, this beer is SO over rated. I don’t understand the hype behind it. It tastes very similar to a Lagunitas IPA, yet at TWICE THE PRICE! WHAT?! Frankly, if you’re that curious, buy a 22oz bottle. I wouldn’t shell out $16 for a six pack. That was one of the most retarded purchase of my life. If it was closer to $10, I probably would have rated this better.
