San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap, Finley's Pub, Denver. Pour is a nice Amber/orange, thin white head. Nose is big hop, big citrus, resin, floral. Taste is bitter, medium bodied. Finished very dry on your palate, but still a full bodied taste. Nice IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strong hoppy aroma and foretaste followed by a very malty taste that negates the hoppy bitterness. Some grassiness in the malt. Had a 6 pack and drank several before the review to try to understand the very high ratings but maybe just not my style of IPA. I am a hophead but am fine with well balanced IPAs too but I appreciate the initial hop bitterness but am not very crazy about the particular malt taste that follows in this beer. Certainly not a bad beer by any standard but for my taste not deserving the extremely high rankings.

Aroma is overwhelmingly citrus. Taste has citrus, some more elusive fruitiness - is this apricot? Appearance and Pala late are good.

12 oz bottle: Amber color. Sweet tangerine and lychee hop aroma, very distinct and fragrant. Full flavored, honey and melon, rather balanced bitterness. Just a very good beer.

Glad sculpin is hitting a wider distribution network. Pours a see through golden orange with a lacing thin white head. Aromas of huge citrus, lemon, apricot, slight grass. Similar flavors with almost a bubblegum finish. Hoppy with a dry finish. Excellent ipa.

I don’t drink much IPA because I usually find it too bitter and hoppy but I really like Sculpin. I have been going to Home Brew Mart since the late 90’s and have overall been impressed with their beers. This one has the characteristic grapefruit hop flavor but is much more balanced than most IPA’s I have had. It is also refreshing and easy to drink. Has complex fruity, floral, and resin aromas, with a good balance of sweet and bitter in the flavor. This is one of the best San Diego style IPA’s out there in my opinion.

Orange beer with a medium foamy white head that is actually pretty dense. Citrusy nose with grapefruit, orange, peach, and pear. Flavor has a bracing hop bite with some bright fruit notes reminiscent of the nose with the addition of some pine resin and pith, but overall it’s not really that bitter for an IPA. I would have liked a little more prominent malt profile to balance it out a bit. Still, it’s a refreshing, drinkable beer that is certainly worth your time.

Bomber bottle: Pours a clear golden with a thin frothy off-white head that diminishes to the perimeter of the glass. Has an excellent hoppy aroma with hints of peaches and apricots. Citrusy lasting flavor is hoppy with a medium body and a mild bitterness in the finish. This beer is very refreshing with an all around WOW factor-excellent!
