San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours orange-amber with a white head. Aromas of orange, peach, grass, green tea, slightly floral. Taste is grapefruit, orange, apricot, grass, and resin. This is mostly hops all around, but there is a backing of delicate malt sweetness. Finish is resinous, bitter, and mostly dry. Citrus, tropical, green and juicy with great balance. Excellent IPA.

Shockingly good for an ipa. Bitter aftertaste. Commoner in the ipa style category. Lacks standout character. Pretty street. Commoner. Just like everyone else's. Why not standout from the pack? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pineapple, apricot, citrus and pine aroma. Taste is very spicy, tropical fruits, big hop bitterness and some grapefruit. Really refreshing and addictive. A first class West coast IPA.

Another great IPA. What can you really say about the best IPAs they all taste so similar. Nothing special other than being really good.

Pours out a clear orangeish gold with lots of head. Taste is creamy and hoppy. Lots of spicy hops. Great IPA with, some sweetness and lots of pine. Had last year, best IPA.

When pouring the beer, you get an amber beer with white foam. The foam has small means bubbles and is perfectly right. The foam stick around for a while and leave little trace in the glass. Hop aroma will direct, a little malt notes. Behind this, we find the fruity tones of grapefruit. A little tropical and mixed herbs, and a little caramel. The first thing you taste the hops and subsequent bitterness. Both hops and bitterness are dominant but behind that is a lovely taste of the grapefruit. Some mixed tropical flavors of orange and a little lemon. Some spices, herbs and a touch of toasted coming towards the end. The hops and bitterness are dominant and sits in all the time and a moderately while afterwards. I think both hops and bitterness takes over a bit much and that the other flavors will not forward enough.

12 oz bottle poured at souplantation in San Diego. Smells like citrus, drank from the bottle so unsure of appearance. Great taste; citrusy hops. Very refreshing. Great beer.

My my my..... I could smell this thing all day. Unbelievable. I wish it tasted as good as it smells. Flavor is still good however a slight letdown compared to the aroma. Very easy on the palate and one 12 oz bottle out of the 6’er disappears very quick, almost too quick. A very easy drinking IPA. Flavor is good, a little too resiny on my opinion and a slightly off aftertaste but good nonetheless. Gonna knock it down a notch or two overall simply because while it is a very good IPA for the price I’m paying for this 6 pack(recently available in GA) I expect to be blown away. Way overpriced. A great beer yes, but in a field filled with numerous solid IPA’s the price is just a little too steep. A great beer nonetheless.

Piney, hops, citrus and sweet fruit aroma. Slightly hazy golden color with a good head. Nice IPA taste. Not to bold, heavy or bitter. Nice and well balanced body. Good beer

Aroma is dominated by hops, grapefruit and spruce. Just a bit of bready malt. Light copper or amber color with a fairly substantial white to off-white head. Clear. Taste is quite dry and quite bitter. Palate is interesting, fairly light body, really crisp and dry. Carbonation average. Finish is grapefruit and carbonation. Overall I like the crispness and dry bitterness. Definitely a hop bomb though, not much malt balance.
