San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: FEB 27, 2014 Beautiful light orange color, with an equally beautiful nose with notes of orange zest, lemon and hops. Flavors of ripe apricot, lemon, and orange blossom balance out the persistent hop bitterness throughout the palate, even if it does finish rather quickly. The lack of depth with this ale is the major reason keeping it from being perfect in our opinion.

From 12 oz. Bottle. Small head lots of carbonation from bottom. Aroma of pine apricot. Pretty dry and a bitter aftertaste. A bit too bitter for my taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

220z bottle poured into a tulip. No freshness info. Pours a relatively clear and bright amber, more yellow than orange. One inch of frothy foam slowly dissipates leaving good lacing. Little carbonation. Beautiful nose! Mango, pineapple, and fresh, piny hops. A hint of rich malt sweetness can be detected under it all. Medium-light bodied but also flat. Not syrupy at all though. Goes down smooth without destroying the palate. Bight and playful hops have only light resiny character. Citrus, orange blossom, and pine on the palate with almost no trace of malty heaviness. Just the way I like it! This is probably the best non imperial IPA I have ever had. I can only imagine how good this would be if it were fresh from the brewery.

Wunderbar! This is an awesome IPA with more than just a hint of pineapple and grapefruit. It has a good solid amount of bitters which contribute to the fruity aroma. This beer will make you salivate, a must have!

Pineapple hops, pungent and pleasant aroma, and clear as a bell liquid gold. Smooth going down, fruity and bitter at the same time. Might be my favorite IPA, or more accurately, my favorite that I can regularly get at the store. Great stuff.

Pours light amber/orange. Nice lacing. Spicey citrus aroma. Pungent hops. Taste... Wonderfully balanced. Sweet start with floral spicey hops kick. Perfect palate. Not too thin but not overly thick. Bitterness lingers until the next sips. Truly world class DIPA. On my short list.

Can- pours yellow with an off white head. I taste all the fruits that are advertised. This is by far my favorite IPA my lips ever touched. Smooth and subtle touch to the end. Great taste. 7% too win win win

This is a great beer if you like something between an IPA or double IPA style. It is fresh, crisp and fully hopped. This beer is less malty than some of my favorites. Funny thing is that it did not taste terribly strong either, but at 7% it is definitely an IPA but perhaps shy of some double IPAs. I have no criticism. The high attenuation of this brew lends itself to higher alcohol than an IPA, but less sweet and malty product than many IPA or doubles. It seems to cleanse my palate rather than saturate and overwhelm it with sticky sweet nectar. It is very good. I donít think it deserves a 100 rating, but beauty is in the taste buds of the beholder. Iíve recently rated the Odell Myrcenary Double (9%) and Green Flash W Coast IPA (7%), which Iíve recently loved. This double is definitely not as sweet or sticky as another favorite, Great Divideís Titan IPA (7%). Several Mid American IPAs Iíve tried in Kansas and Nebraska lately have had off flavors that I believe may have resulted from wimpy to nasty tasting hopping. I keep finding myself returning to Rocky Mountain and West Coast ales that satisfy. This is a top IPA in my book, but one possessing a lower residual gravity and malty character. And the high quality hopping delivered exactly what I was looking for.

Crystal clear golden in color with moderate amount of head. Aroma is dominated by fruity hops. Lots of tropical fruit in the nose and in the taste followed by a hint of malt sweetness. Great balance between bitterness, malt sweetness, and hop character. Currently my favorite IPA.
