San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12 oz bottle poured at souplantation in San Diego. Smells like citrus, drank from the bottle so unsure of appearance. Great taste; citrusy hops. Very refreshing. Great beer.

I have had this beer more than a few times but never written a review. This one is based on a 22 0z. bottle. Poured a light golden amber with an ample two-finger head which dissapted into a white covering fairly quickly. Lacing was on the lighter side but lasted. Nose is a wonderful collection of orange and mango, some pine and floral hops. Taste starts with a some sweetness and citrus and then quickly folds into a pleasantly dry and mildly bitterness. There is some alcohol warming at the end as well. Feel is medium to light and oily. This is a very refreshing beer you must try - IF it’s fresh. Highly recommended and near the top of my favs.

P: Pours a clear (tiny specks) apricot body with a off white milky head that leaves behind wet sloppy lacing. S: Aroma delivers lush peaches and apricots are leading the way of the tropical parade. Lemon tartness and faint pine resin contribute to the sweet fruit. T/M: Super sweet tropical fruits up front then the bitter lemon, grapefruit and orange oil take over the dry finish. Toasted toffee malt and pepper. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. O: Lush tropical fruits delicate spice and toasted malt. The bitterness in the finish really rounds out the sweetness. Fantastic easy drinking IPA to seek out.

Mango and caramel on the nose in balanced succession. Enchanting appearance: very lively carbo bubbles; two-finger creamy ivory head; sparkling clear light gold. Taste: tart citrus, sweet mango, and finishes with bitter pine and saltiness. Palate: thin to oily. refreshing carbonation feel. lingering bitter finish.

A decent IPA, with some good tropical aroma, but I just felt the body was a touch thin in relation to the scent up front

Clear, deep amber in color. Rather minimal off-white head. Rich, powerful aroma. Notes of resin, citrus, herbs, toast, and caramel. Taste is earthy, with underlying hints of fruit and a bit of citrus tartness. Medium body, slightly oily texture, lively carbonation and a hoppy, bitter finish. An excellent beer.

Aroma is dominated by hops, grapefruit and spruce. Just a bit of bready malt. Light copper or amber color with a fairly substantial white to off-white head. Clear. Taste is quite dry and quite bitter. Palate is interesting, fairly light body, really crisp and dry. Carbonation average. Finish is grapefruit and carbonation. Overall I like the crispness and dry bitterness. Definitely a hop bomb though, not much malt balance.

4 finger beige head that sank to 6 mm, amber body. Nose: Peach, passionfruit, kiwi, starfruit, green pepper, melon and oranges. Aroma: Oranges, grapefruit, resin, cookies, starfruit, passionfruit, kiwi, caramel, green pepper and melon. Semi-long, semi-bitter ending.

Nice cloudy golden amber, about an inch of head settles to a half finger, pretty good lacing. Aroma is full of fruit and citrus. Lots of mango, pineapple, apricots, hops, grapefruit, and little honey. Taste is pretty close to the nose. Lots of mango and hop. It is sweet, tangy, and bitter all at once. Mouth feel is pretty bright, lots of "zing" from the carbonation. Smooth going down with some hop bitterness and a little sweetness in the body.
