San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a large, creamy, white head. Aroma has lovely hops, peach, grapefruit, resin, citrus. Medium carbonation, fine dry and quite creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is mild at first, bringing out sweetish doughy malts, then turns more fruity, peach, grapefruit and citrus with a piney punch. Lingering heavy bitterness.

Bomber poured a clear gold with a lingering ring of white foam. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, biscuit, orange zest and light melon. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, pine, grapefruit and light tropical fruit with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.

A pale blonde IPA with a thick white head. In aroma, nice citrussy hops with light pinhey notes, floral, pure californian. In mouth, a smooth IPA with light biscuit malts, floral hopping, well balanced and smooth. On tap at Cajun Café, Jan. 5 2011.

Bottle. Orange blonde color. Oily hops, grapefruit and pineapple in the aroma and flavor. Blackcurrant. Thinnish. Long earthy oily hopbitter finish. Well balanced, but not a hop monster.

Woh, cabbage aroma?!?! Onion. Stinky dishcloth. Simple palate. Stick, forced carbonation. One-dimensional resiny bitterness. No depth, sweet malts, flavourless bitterness. Everything that is wrong about modern IPA. No balance, no drinkability, no integration of the flavours. If another ticker had appeared, I would immediately have offered my glass. I can finish this, but I’d rather give it away. Give me something tasty instead, I’d rather the spring onions in my salad.
