San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2012 Bottle @ home, courtesy of daknole. Thanks! Slightly hazy, golden appearance with an off white head. Potent resiny, mary jane, piney hoppy, earthy, apricot, grapefruity, mango aroma. Resiny, sticky, piney, organic hoppy, sweet malty, fairly fruity, mango, grapefruity flavor with a sticky, organic hoppy finish. One of the more assertive IPAs out there and quite nice!

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2009 22oz bottle acquired in trade with WeeHeavySD (thanks!). Poured a medium to deeper and clear golden color with an larger sized off white head. Aromas of pine, citrus (grapefruits and lemons), and grassy. Nice and hoppy aroma. Tastes of citrus, light caramel, pine, some melons, and a little fruity. Nicely bitter with a light sweetness. 8 3 8 4 16 Retasted and I’m upping the numbers on this one.

Tap at the Ginger Man, Manhattan - 29/02/12. Pours to a slightly obscured orange/golden colour, good finger of creamy head with plenty of lacing and good retention as I drank. Full on piney nose, grapefruit, mango a little sweetness on the nose and a touch of caramel. Tastes allied to the nose, again with a litte sweetness and malt, not as bitter as you may expect from the aroma. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation and a smooth feel/finish.

Taste is very heavy hops.... pine, earth, vegetal and a little metal. Slight citrusy fruit and caramel notes. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours orange amber with white head. Nose/taste of mango, pineapple, peach pit, citrus, lemon and caramel malt. Dry citrus finish with hints of resin/pine. Body on the lighter side of medium. Hops are slightly perfumy. Easy drinking.

Pale golden pour. The nose is very, very tropical and fruity. Loads of bright, citrusy hops with a lovely mango/pineapple character. Very, very hoppy with a bit of rich light tropical fruit. A bit of sweet pale malt, but this is all about the hops. Very fresh and tasty with loads of sweet hops. It’s not really all that bitter, but it is a delicious, juicy hop bomb.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2010 650 mL from Southbay. HOLY $%@$!.Pours a clear, light amber with a two-finger, creamy, off-white head. Good retention and lacing. Okay lacing. Aroma is huge fresh grapefruit, tangerine, peaches and cream ice cream, huge butterscotch, caramel. Taste is fresh, citrusy, wet hops with butterscotch and a massive bitterness permeating throughout. Buttery, creamy on the palate that leaves a sort of oily mouthfeel. Wow. 9/4/8/5/17=4.3

After multiple samples of this beer on cask, tap, bomber all from Ballast Point itself, I really need to lower this rating. The IPA is awesome- that is a fact. The huge is massively rocky, leaves massive lace. But its superlative nose of mango peel, peaches, apricots is let down by a mostly voiding body, little butterscotch, very little creamy mouthfeel. More dry, seltzery, bitter. Still excellent.

Bottle [from trade with mista] @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear orange color, full sized off-white head that lasts for a long time. Aroma is malts, loads of hops, very fruity with grapefruit amd mandarin. Taste malts, hops, fruit hops, fruity, grapefruit, bitter. Lingering fruit and bitter hops in the aftertaste. Incredibly balanced flavor between the fruit hops and bitter hops. Medium to full body, perfect carbonation. I thought maybe this beer is hyped, but it is simply good. Very good, incredibly balanced. Lovely IPA.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2010 Sample from a bottle courtesy of JaBier at the Day Before Labor Day party. This brew is a hazy orange-gold color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily. Thin rings of lacing. Great aroma of ripe peaches, citrusy hops and pine. Medium body with a moderately bitter piney hops character along with flavors of citrus and malt. The finish is hoppy with a lingering citrusy aftertaste. Good IPA all around.
