COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Drank from a 22 oz bottle poured into a glass. Pours with very little head but a rich peachy/gold color-beautiful. Aroma is piney with a hint of apricot and mango. Taste is fabulous mix of bright crisp hops, citrus and apricots. Neither sweet or dry, and one of the easiest to drink IPAs I have tried. Good thing it is light on alcohol (for an IPA that is). Perfect amount of fizz to go with the fresh flavors and aroma. Overall a delicious beer perfect for late afternoon relaxin'! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a bottle. Clear golden orange with foamy white head and some nice lacing. Fantastic aroma - citrus, pine and tropical fruit. Taste is bitter throughout with some sweetness opening up in the middle followed by a bitter dry finish that lingers and lingers. Very nicely balanced. Really enjoyed this beer, only thing that didn’t suit my taste was the heavy dryness. Mouthfeel was moderate with crisp carbonation. An excellent IPA.

Pretty much the perfect IPA, plus it’s always readily available. Sturdy enough malt backbone that lets bright apricot and citrus shine.

Nicely carbonated and clear golden in color. The aroma is of citrus, hops, and lite sweet malts. A simple, balanced, and perfect IPA. The flavor matches the aroma. The finish has a mild bitterness that is very pleasant. It doesn’t linger either. Overall this is an excellent beverage to try.

May 2012. 22. oz. bottle. A masterpiece of an IPA. So balanced and well made and close to perfection. Only a few others can stand up to this one. Pine, citrus, hops, tropical fruit, it’s all there.

Bomber from Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont (love that place!). Pours clear golden with goodly white, foamy head. Aroma of malty fermenting beer/slight alcohol, pine and slight background orange. Flavor, carried by a medium body, comes on softly and well-balanced. This is one of the most well-balanced, well-behaved and well-roundedly delicious IPA?s in my experience. It?s a crime beer like this isn?t more available on the East Coast. I would be drinking this every week if i could find it, and I?ve been looking for weeks now!

Bursting with citrus and pine aroma. Pours a deep golden color with generous white head. The taste is bitter but opens up to some sweeter tropical flavors towards the end. This beer is so good, I feel lucky to be able to drink it.

Ar: Bright grapefruit, orange, and pine. Ap: Orange, clear - medium off-white head with good retention, and leaves a ring of creamy foam. T: Sweet, bread malt, with some biscuit flavor - lots of grapefruit and pine, some lemon notes, too - high, clean bitterness - finish is orange, bitterness, and toasted malt. P: Medium body with high carbonation - finish is dry. O: Excellent American IPA - big and bright hop flavor with a clean and supportive malt backbone.

Orange pour into snifter. Piney and orange citrus on the nose then tongue. Dry. Missing the body of an East Coast IPA, but that’s the point, right? Lovely.

12 bottle supplied by SHERM1016....thanks! Pours a rich dark yellow; moderate head. No lacing. Who cares....this is one very great beer. Bitter / hoppy (juniper / pine) nose and dry / hoppy initial taste. Bitter taste lingers....but what an excellent bitter it is! Very tasty!!

12 ounce bottle divided into tulip glasses. I’m glad to see this distributed in the Chicago market in the past few weeks. It’s the gold standard, in my mind, for the single ipa style. I’ve benefitted from a fresh bottle, less than a month old, so the hops were at their juicy finest. Slightly herbaceous and veggie in character, and those hops pair up deliciously in a non-citrus sort of way. Medium bodied, ruby red, good amount of bubble and foam presence. At 7% abv, they’ve crafted a finely balanced ipa that you can drink without knocking out your senses nor your tastebuds. If you haven’t tried this one, it’s worth hunting down.
