San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bursting with citrus and pine aroma. Pours a deep golden color with generous white head. The taste is bitter but opens up to some sweeter tropical flavors towards the end. This beer is so good, I feel lucky to be able to drink it.

Transfer from BA review on 8-17-13- Poured from the bottle into a pint glass Appearance- The beer pours an orange-amber color with a one finger foamy white head. The head fades over a moderate level of time leaving a very persistent foam on the top of the brew as well as some foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is rather sweet with lots of tropical fruits of mango, pineapple, and tangerine, accompanied by some caramel sweetness as well. With these aromas is a lighter hop aroma of grapefruit and a little bit of pine. Taste – The taste begins with a lighter sweet flavor of tangerine and tropical fruits mixed with a cracker and biscuit flavor. The biscuit and cracker create a base for the brew, lasting throughout the entire taste. The tangerine and tropical sweetness fades however, leaving a much drier taste at the end. Initially the taste is smoother with only a little hop bitterness of a more grassy and grapefruit nature. As the taste moves on, and the sweetness fades, the hop gets more bitter as other hop flavors of a pine nature joining in. The grassy and pine flavors take on the bulk of the hop flavor as they increase to the end, leaving a rather bitter and dry flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. The mouthfeel is rather nice for the crisper and drier flavors of the brew all while keeping the hop flavors well supported. Overall –Starts out sweeter and finishes a bit drier and more bitter. A rather tasty IPA.

Great all around IPA. Glowing orange colored. Citrus, apricot, some pine, and some honey in the aroma. Great balance between sweet malts, juicy citrus and mango, and light hopping bitterness. Easy drinking. Fine stuff indeed.

One of my favorite IPAs. Very fragrant with fruity hops and really well balanced with a nice bitterness to the finish. Price point is only major downfall of this beer. Have only had this one in cans.

Poured from 2 bombers into a pint glass. This is the first time I rated beer in the opposite, usually I go to places and buy beer, drink it, and then rate it. This time I found a highly rated beer, sought it out, and then drank it. It’s funny how expectations change things because after reading the reviews of this beer I guess I must have been expecting a genie to fly out of the bottle and grant me three wishes. Well since this did not happen I will tell you what those wishes would have been. 1.) I wish this beer was $12 a six pack instead of $9 a bomber. b.) I wish this beer was a bit stronger maybe closer to 8% for the price. 3.) I wish I could taste any of the fruit listed on the side of the bottle that was mirrored in many of the reviews. I have had $100 a bottle cognac and can appreciate the reasons why it was 3 times the price, this is not the same, there are better IPA for cheaper. It’s good not legendary.

This IPA does live up to the hype. Medium bodied with a nice mouthfeel. Hoppy with notes of grapefruit and a good bitter finish.

Bottle at Brewdog Stockholm, april 18th 2014. Hazy orange body with a nice white head. Finally getting to try this hyped beer, and it delivers. Citrusy pine aroma with a late apricot and peach kick, taste is floral with grapefruit and apricot, subtle balance of caramel, hay, strong bitter finish, with a dry clean lemon and apricot aftertaste. Very nice!
