COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours a clear orange, looks like your typical IPA. Very pleasant fruity floral aroma. Taste is sweet malts with solid hop backbone. Some citrus in their but the fruitiness wins out with this beer, which I love. I love my IPAs fruity. I usually donít have a sophisticated enough palate to distinguish certain flavors, but with this beer I was very easily able to distinguish peach/apricot, mango and a hint of pineapple. Fantastic, just fantastic. I think this will be my go to IPA.

Color light through copper Orange is slightly cloudy and has a short cream of a finger thick and creamy white and medium bubbles. Loops are evident along the cup rim and small bubbles form the body of this beer. The aroma brings much grapefruit, orange peel, a little resin, pine, honey flowers, full cookie, passion fruit, quince, and some citrus tones are found in the background. The fruity flavor of course with mango, peach, lemon, pineapple, grapefruit, a caramelized light, dryness pine and why not light passion fruit nuances. Very faintly bitter hops are dancing in our tongue and palate. Smooth and creamy with a slightly bitter ending. Great requested. Its aftertaste is very fruity and malty, but does not bring a remarkable sweet. Giving a beautiful complexity, power and great drinhability. The body is light, creamy carbonation, bringing a bit of viscosity, but it is still fluid me. Great IPA Beer!

Slight grapefruit notes. A very good IPA. Pretty much a hop bomb, but drinkable.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours slightly golden hazy with a white layer of foam that settles to fine but prominent layer through out the session. The aroma is all citrus, fruits, pines, anything but malt or yeast. The taste is medium-full, waves of citrus, fruit and pine. Somewhat sweet. Very soft and lovely texture. For an american IPA it is very tasty, but as with most of these beers I miss the maltiness.

Pours clear copper with a big puffy beige head, very good lacing, excellent retention. Aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral notes, bread, grass. Medium body, creamy. Lightly sweet, a hint of citrus, full bitter finish, but not over-the-top. Nice fruity-hop IPA.

Appearance: clear light orange, with a finger of near white creamy head. Aroma: smelled pretty good--grapefruit, orange pith, resin, pine, floral honey, light graham cracker, apricots (marmalade?). Taste: okaaaay--grapefruit, mango, pineapple, maybe some passion fruit, with light caramel, then a wave of apricot and pine. Finish: lingering bitterness, palate seems almost watery. Notes: Clearly mine will be an apostate opinion, but this to me just didnít live up to the hype. Especially when compared to similar items like Hopslam or Two Hearted, or even Dogfish 120, it just didnít compare. Plan to try again, based on reputation. Bottle from Total Wine & More, Fairfax, Virginia (Pickett Center).

Near clear straw colour pour. Small lasting light beige head. Sadly it is clear right away that this is an old bottle.. I can see that this was great once but it has become a malty Sculpin Iím afraid... I get some fruity hops on the nose but a pretty malty base on the palate. Potentially a much higher rating but have to settle for 3.8 now. Iíll be back. I hope.
