San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours amber with a large, lasting head. Nose shows sweet clean malt, resinous hops, piny notes and a little citrus. Enticing. Great balanced flavours, again there’s a mix of sweet clean malt and piny, resinous hops. Some spicy notes as well. Superbly balanced, very drinkable.

12oz can. Lively pour. Peachy zesty aroma. Frothy off white head. Golden brite and bubbly. Highlight is the smooth creamy mouthfeel that contrasts with some tangy, tonsil-itching bitterness. Fruity lightness of flavor belies 7% abv. Superb.

Cobrizo limpio y espuma blanca. Aromas de uva, mango, pomelo y pino. Cuerpo medio y meloso con sabores afrutados de melocotón, cítricos de pomelo y final de amargor intenso y redondo que recuerda a la resina y el pino. Muy rica.

Fresh 12oz bottle. Aroma is so fruity, with rounded harmonious notes of dried mango, pineapple concentrate, fresh berries and a sweet, understated malt presence that doesn’t allow the beer to meander too far into one-dimensional juicy fruit territory. The "sting" comes from an initial wave of piney hops combined with generous carbonation. Interesting hop profile in that juicy, fruit forward aromatics juxtapose nicely with slightly harsh, dry piney hops. This IPA definitely has it all; finishes a little dry for my palate and would like the fruit forward hops to be featured more in the flavor but all in all a great beer.

Poured from bottle into a Spieglau IPA glass. Clear light orange amber with persistent off-white foam and lace. Malty, honey, faint caramel, with a rich Munich-like sweetness to support the intense grapefruity American hops, equally strong flowery essence unusual in these flagship West Coast IPA. Great strength, no unpleasant alcoholic heat. Medium body, well-rounded mouthfeel, long-lasting hops-forward aftertaste. Really good stuff. I’ll have to get this again next time I’m in California or Illinois.

The IPA character only hits the front of one’s mouth and does travel back. It medium body with good scent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Burk pĺ bishop. Brunröd med mycket vitt skum. Kryddig humledoft. Lätt metallisk smak med lite fruktighet som försvinner fort.

I keep telling myself that I shouldn't make beer the focus of my life, but then I drink this Sculpin, and of course I have to continue. Beautiful, aromatic, rich, and flavorful (live the hops). I think I'm weak, and will continue to live beer.
