San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

I drank Alpha King for the first time earlier today, and this beer is eerily similar, but to me it is a decent bit inferior in quality. It starts with a rather boring appearance, a golden color verging slightly into orange territory but with a head that fades quickly and leaves little or no lacing. The nose is of similar quality to AK, with mango absolutely jumping out and a slight note of pineapple juice acidity. The taste is good, but not as pleasant as that of Alpha King, being less varied in its fruity flavors and also shockingly bitter. I appreciate some bitterness in my beers; Pliny the Elder is probably my favorite beer for drinking in a session, but Sculpin is a bit less graceful than that beer and takes a hit because of it. The palate is nice, with a medium body and decent malt smoothness mostly on the front end. Overall, Sculpin is a really, really good beer. A 4.1 makes this very clear. But I do wonder if I would have like this beer a lot more with just a slightly lower IBU level.

Awesome aroma dripping of resinous hop oils. The flavor is a little lighter than the aroma and has some more fruit than the aroma would lead you to believe. Grapefruit surrounded by cannabis. A DIPA aroma with a lighter IPA flavor and body. Good stuff.

Bomber thanks to Amy
Appearance : Clear pale yellow big foamy and creamy head. Extensive lacing.
Aroma : Fresh and green hops. Very leafy and slightly floral. Nice notes of mangos. Quite malty. Light notes of honey.
Taste : Some spices. Lots of malt. Leafy hops with fruity mango notes. I was expecting a bit more hops considering the powerful nose. Finish is slightly resinous. Rather bitter.
Overall : Amazing nose, leafy and fruity hops. Taste is a bit disappointing compared to the nose but still very good. Highly drinkable with a nice sharp but light bitterness that only makes it even more drinkable. Nice crisp bitter finish. Amazing beer !

Pours tea-orange into the glass, with a retentive frothy head. The nose contains a huge bouquet of pine and citrus elements. Flavors of grapefruit, mangos, pine resin, tea-leaf tannins and fresh grassy hops intermingle in a perfect balance. Although complex, each pull provides an easy quaff and a light-round mouthfeel. Carbonation is smooth, yet provides for a lightly zesty palate. Perfect execution of an IPA. Great brew.

7/23/10. Thanks to Tim for sharing! Piney, floral aroma, very nice. Sweet floral hop flavor with just enough balancing bitterness. This is very good!

Pours a light orange with a foamy off-white head. Sharp, piney hops are balanced with sweet mandarin on the nose. Some nectarine as well. Strong, refreshing, bitter hops in the flavor - pine resin and grapefruit. Big, but clean - goes down smooth. This one is seriously tasty - I’m a fan.

This ale is a murky light copper color with a faint touch of carbonation. The nose of this beer is complex with notes of farmers market peach, passion fruit, citrus, and apricot jelly. On mouth this is a smoothly balanced IPA with a medium body, plenty of hops, and the slightest green hop flavor. The finish is chewy and of medium length.

bomber shared by rudolf with me, blankboy and garthicus. Looks the part - hazy gold, quite bubbly, average lasting white frothy/fizzy head. Well-balanced aroma - lovely sweet maltiness, peach & pineapple, sweet and tart both, with plenty of hemp, citrus and lemon zest bitterness. Taste follows - again, nicely balanced, and the west coast bitterness takes its sweet time building, but when it finally arrives, it’s pretty big, bitter, and acidic - good thing there’s a lot of malt alredy on the scene - somewhat strong alcohol too, just what I wanted. Solid body on this one, well-carbonated, enough hops in there to make it both acidic AND astringent, and it lingers a long time - dry, bitter, a bit alcoholic and definitely resiny - this is top-shelf stuff, big and balanced both, I want more (thanks, Rudy!!!)

@ the homebrew store - Straight clear gold, thin white creamy head. Nose was just freakin loaded with pine, pine needle, pine resin, pine everything! Oh yeah, just a hint of grapefruit I suppose. Deep bitter flavor from start to finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, super hoppy finish. Any sign of sweet malt would have upped the score even more, but I personally always dig a good hop bomb...

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2008 Serious need of a re-rate as the first time I rated this it came right after a pint of Elder so this seemed like crap. Bomber from the Homebrewmart brewery. Pours much yellower than I expected with a big 3 finger creamy tan head. Nose is sweet, grassy and hoppy. Taste is sweet and hoppy with a very piney grassy feeling, a different but big and good IPA.
