San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2008 On tap @ the Linda Vista brewery. I was really diggin this IPA. Tastes like the little brother of the Dorado double. Very nice hoppy aroma with some citrus fruits and a bit of grass. A nice slightly sweet and smooth finish.......bottle this!!....hahahaha

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2008 Mmmmmm. yummy. Tried from cask at Ballast Pointís 11th anniversary celebration. Nice creamy 1 finger microbubble head that quickly fades to nothing (very cask like). Pale yellow-orange color. Nice medium hoppy aroma after head has faded. Medium grapefruit hop bitterness. Kind of easy to drink. Becomes more watery after a few sips. 8,3,7,3,16:3.7 Tried again at Churchills with deftim 13 and Ivan 3/6/08. Wow! Super duper easy to drink. Much easier to drink than the younger and elder I had tonight. I have to bump the rating way up. I have spoken!

22oz bomber from SBD. Pours a brilliant light orange color with a crisp white head with decent retention. Smells of light citrusy hops, a bit of orangy sweetness, faintly grassy. Tastes light and citrusy, malty and hoppy sweet up front, crisply bitter on the finish. Very well balanced and 7% to boot. Light/medium body, very thin and smooth, but a little hop syrupiness as well. Crisp carbonation.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2008 Bomber courtesy of DarkElf. Pours a crystal clear gold with one finger white head and spotty lacing. Nose is very fruity with ripe oranges and pink grapefruit. Taste is caramel, apricots, orange peel and a resiny pine finish. Medium mouth feel. This is a full flavor IPA and Iím glad I got a chance to try it this fresh. Thanks Stephen again for the hook-up!

Cask at Bella Vista Grand Opening: pours a golden amber with a thin white head, aroma is full of citrus and hops (amazing aroma), taste is hoppy with some citrus, very easy to drink. This is a very nice IPA, I had assumed it was a DIPA,

22oz. bomber, with a big thank you to stefanje! Pours a clear golden orange with a creamy one finger white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma is very nice, with island fruits, floral, citrus, pine, and light caramel. Flavor is more of the same, with a milder but enjoyable hops bite that lingers a bit. I have been looking forward to trying this one for a long time, and it lived up to expectations quite nicely. Itís right up there with some of the best IPAís the West Coast has to offer. Thanks again Stefan!

Scored this via trade and drank is almost side by side with Pliny the Elder. This beat out Pliny overall. Bomber pours a clear orange with a white, creamy head. Nose wasnít nearly as nice as Pliny but still very appealing with tropical fruits, mango, citrus fruits, a touch of grapefruit and a sprinkling of sweet malt. Flavor is where Sculpin separated from Pliny, tons of sweet, sticky fruits of all shapes and sizes, sweet malts, but mostly a fruit explosion. Finish is bitter, but also clean and crisp. Really well crafted and a beer you could drink every day.

Bomber in trade with Stefanje. Nose is rich and has peaches, passionfruit, and heaps of pine sap. Body is on the light side of medium. Floral rounded hop infused malt balances easily on ones tounge. Hops are not omnipresent but certainly not wallflowers. A sweet even bosy and finish that blend into one another s well that the finish is nearly undetectable other than the lack of beer in your mouth. Very nice.
