San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2008 Bomber courtesy of DarkElf. Pours a crystal clear gold with one finger white head and spotty lacing. Nose is very fruity with ripe oranges and pink grapefruit. Taste is caramel, apricots, orange peel and a resiny pine finish. Medium mouth feel. This is a full flavor IPA and I’m glad I got a chance to try it this fresh. Thanks Stephen again for the hook-up!

Bottle Shared with GMCC2181, thanks Gabe. Aroma was pine, citrus and hops. Color was a nice bright light orange with nice head. Taste was pine, floral, and grassy. A nice easy to drink smooth IPA.

Cask at Bella Vista Grand Opening: pours a golden amber with a thin white head, aroma is full of citrus and hops (amazing aroma), taste is hoppy with some citrus, very easy to drink. This is a very nice IPA, I had assumed it was a DIPA,

22oz. bomber, with a big thank you to stefanje! Pours a clear golden orange with a creamy one finger white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma is very nice, with island fruits, floral, citrus, pine, and light caramel. Flavor is more of the same, with a milder but enjoyable hops bite that lingers a bit. I have been looking forward to trying this one for a long time, and it lived up to expectations quite nicely. It’s right up there with some of the best IPA’s the West Coast has to offer. Thanks again Stefan!

Scored this via trade and drank is almost side by side with Pliny the Elder. This beat out Pliny overall. Bomber pours a clear orange with a white, creamy head. Nose wasn’t nearly as nice as Pliny but still very appealing with tropical fruits, mango, citrus fruits, a touch of grapefruit and a sprinkling of sweet malt. Flavor is where Sculpin separated from Pliny, tons of sweet, sticky fruits of all shapes and sizes, sweet malts, but mostly a fruit explosion. Finish is bitter, but also clean and crisp. Really well crafted and a beer you could drink every day.

Bomber in trade with Stefanje. Nose is rich and has peaches, passionfruit, and heaps of pine sap. Body is on the light side of medium. Floral rounded hop infused malt balances easily on ones tounge. Hops are not omnipresent but certainly not wallflowers. A sweet even bosy and finish that blend into one another s well that the finish is nearly undetectable other than the lack of beer in your mouth. Very nice.

Pours a crystal clear light orange with a thin white head. The nose is an all out assault of juicy tangerine and bubble gum. The flavor doesn’t live up to the expectations set my the aroma, but still its very good with some piny and citrus hops. Medium body and super easy to drink. Thanks for sharing Josh.

Bomber, thanks to WeeHeavySD for this one. Pours a light orange color with a nice foamy head, I could smell the citrusy hops the moment I cracked the cap, but it smells like a grapefruit in the glass. The taste is a little bit more subtle than I expected, not as much bitterness, just a LOT of hop flavor and aroma. A tasty brew. Thanks Jon!

22oz bottle from Hillcrest Whole Foods (San Diego, CA). Pours a little paler than most San Diego IPA’s, a light golden amber with large carbonation bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. About one finger of white head. The wonderful hoppy aroma is less citrusy than many others in this style but still fruity -- I do get the mango, apricot, and peach in there as the label promises. Tastes hoppy and bitter with pine and grapefruit but the bitterness finds a very pleasant level. There is a definite hint of some fruity sweetness in here as well. Lighter body than most others in this style; good carbonation.
