San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap at Hashigo Zake The fruity nose described in the commercial description did not really present itself to me. I might have agreed on the vegetative growth of fruit trees however. It has a sense of the field and orchard other than the smell of ripening fruit. It is quite nice. The hops are in clear evidence too. It is clearly an IPA; -- - looks like a premium mainstream pilsner, even a champagne without the effervescence. good lacing and medium head; -- - bitter hops taste - nothing vaguely sweet, there is the sourness that one associates with grapefruit juice and no hint of saltiness though it is well rounded leaving me to suspect that there is salty aspect to the taste -- - medium body, good but not overdone effervescence, nothing oily or creamy and lacking anything suggesting thick or or sticky - it is clean and clear on the tongue. nice clean slightly bitter finish; -- - consistently a well rounded example of IPA.

22 ounce bottle courtesy of trade from mobz24, poured into a snifter glass. Clear golden color with frothy head. Very aromatic -- citrusy, tropical fruit flavors come through, especially pineapple, mango and grapefruit. Mainly grapefruit and more tropical fruit flavors in the taste. A bit of sweetness to start off, but then comes hoppy bitterness taste that mixes citrus, tropical fruits, piney and grassy notes and some resinous flavors. Mainly citrus and grapefruit in the finish. Light and crisp mouthfeel, good carbonation. Very long dry finish that leaves a resinous grapefruit flavor tingling in the mouth. Very drinkable and enojoyable beer worth seeking out.

22oz poured into a tulip lass. Pours a nice orangish yellow with a nice offwhite head that is substantial and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is straightforward IPA, resinous, citrus...yum. The taste has notes of apricot and lemon, with a pungent hop flavor. Nicely bitter...and the mouthfeel is thin with medium carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, this beer is a straightforward and delicious IPA....not one to miss.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2011 Draught at Galbraiths Alehouse (Auckland, NZ). Poured a hazy amber/yellow. Huge peach aroma. A creaminess to the palate that balanced out the hop and brought out the caramel in the malt. Went down very well with The GrandMistress, so kudos indeed.

Bottle pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma shows notes of caramel, mango, orange, and pine. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of peach, tangerine, and apricot. Overall body is moderate, and exceptionally fruity with well balanced bitterness.

Pours slightly darker than straw-colored with a large white head. There’s definitely orange and cat piss in the nose. I swear I smell marijuana, too. Bizarre. This would be a great summertime IPA because it is so refreshing. Lots of citrus on the palate, with flavors of orange and grapefruit. It’s not particularly dry and there’s just a small bit of sweetness on the tale end. Really great beer, but the hype seems a bit over the top.

On tap at the brewery location just north of San Diego. The color is more golden than I would have expected, it’s clear that there has been no attempt at tempering the hops with big malts. The bright west coast hops and their resiny character is what shines through in this delicious beer. A great representative of the area for my visit to Cali.

Tampa, Fl - Whole Foods - 22 oz bomber. Nice dark golden - light orange pour with a soft pillowy white head that leave plenty of lacing. Oh so pleasant aroma with some honeysuckle sweet accents, just a hint of spruce. Flavor is smooth, yet tangy. Pick up some mango, papaya and just a hint of grapefruit. Hope forward flavor with not much of a malty back end, but sits right on this one. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Had a few from this brewer in Hawaii a few years back - brings back fond memories - good to see them on the East Coast.

Cask at Get Real NY. Dry hopped with Fuggles. Very nice fruity aroma, lots of citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit. Taste is hoppy, pine and fruit, but very smooth. Light bitterness on the finish. Very fruity, flavorful, smooth, complex, amazing IPA. Need to try this again, and soon. One of the few beers at Get Real that really stood out.
