San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Clear, strongly-hued sunshine yellow. Very sharp, dank, resiny aroma. Tangerine, orange zest, basil (?!) - all come through in very modular, defined aroma. Thinnish, elegant but dusty maltiness, anchored by rich notes of mango, tangerine and cantaloupe. Creamy, judiciously carbonated finish.

Draft at O’Brien’s. Lots of citrus and apricot fruit aromas off this light coppery brew wtih a really nice white head. Flavors were similar with more on the citrus side. Grapefruit turned to pine somewhat as it warmed. Sweet fruits with a nice malty backbone. Pretty full mouth feel. Very tasty.

Thanks to Linus_Stick for sharing. Pour was a nice golden color with a thin white head. Aroma was filled with hops and just a hint of fruit. The taste was just excellent, clean, bitter, and filled with hops that lead you right to a crisp finish that left you wanting more. Definitely a beer I would drink on the regular were it readily available here in PA.

Bottle. Hugely sweet citrus nose, orange, mango, pineapple, and other tropical fruit. Clear gold with a thin white head. Balanced bitterness, aggressive but not harsh. Thick and sweet mouthfeel. Top notch.

I can see what the fuss is about! This is a wonderfully fresh, fruity and incredibly well-done bitter beer. Lots of lemon and grapefruit, but also just a huge sticky tropical thing -- thankfully. though, this beer is not sweet, not at all. It is hugely aromatic; incredibly bright grassy, herbal and fruity aromas just leap out of the glass. Great color and heft, leaves you salivating after a long bitter, drying-out finish full of lemon and tangy breadiness. Just fantastic. From stefanje - thanks a million!

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2009 bottle shared thanks to zinister. Pours a clear orange with a thin white head. Nose was of floral and citrus hops. Oranges. The taste was of orange and lemon citrus with hops just blowing you away! Mouthfeel was very hoppy up front. Super harsh and super bitter. Wow!

Bottled at Papsoes Blind tasting 19th. June 2008 no 27: Pine, herbs, flowers and citrus in the aroma. Flavour is sweet, herbal, has light caramel, flowers and pine. Meidum to full bodied. Dry. Medium to strong bitterness in the end. Is quite balanced. High drinkability.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2009 Bottle from Stan at Lone Hill. A good recommendation - not as citrus juicy as I like them, but I was intrigued with the mango notes. If the bottle you get is off, however, gets malty fast and starts to taste English. Beware!
