San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Summer Beer Dabbler 2014. I don’t know how I missed this beer for so long. Good, sweet malt. Bitter hops with flowers, citrus, and some pine. Thick palate for the style.

6-pack from Applejack. Golden orange and clear appearance with medium-sized, lingering white head. Citrus, tropical fruits, floral notes and light earthy tones. Crisp, fresh, hoppy and easy to drink. Top notch IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear light copper orange with a big frothy white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet fruity piney hops. It’s a bit subdued.

The flavor is sweet bready malts and a little fruit with big piney peppery hops and a dank finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a very nice IPA. It reminds me of Odell’s IPA but is a bit pricier.

courtesy of fiulijn - hazy reddish-orange beer with a poor head retention; solid aroma of oranges and grapefruit; full-bodied, juicy and very tasty; a solid bitterness and quite dry; long and very fruity hoppy finish (tangerines and oranges)- clean and straightforward

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2014 12 once bottle. Nice orange body, orange and other citrus on the nose. Pretty clean, bright and refreshing. Finally got a fresh bottle. Not my favorite IPA but good stuff. Make sure you have a fresh bottle!

Pours with an orange-amber body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and hoppy with a nice pine note and a slight citrus note. The finish is nice and hoppy. Medium bodied, smooth and very drinkable with a dry finish.

On draft at brewery. This is a special brew that may appear again in the future - let’s keep our fingers crossed! Pours clear dark golden color with a creamy white head that left good lacing. Aroma is all hops, very crisp, citrus, pine and herby notes. Flavor is sweet (like lemonade is sweet) but dominated by the tangy, tart hops, grapefruit, pine, grass and subtle earthy notes as well. Leaves the mouth with a wonderful tingly, pucker. Medium body and smooth carbonation. Very nice IPA, at 7.5% abv and 70 IBU’s this is bordering on a DIPA.

UPDATED: DEC 14, 2013 Giant vanilla, oak, bourbon aroma, but a wild sour funky tropical fruit flavor. Giant contrast between aroma and taste, which can be fun! Yeah, there’s hops but this mofo be wild and funky, monky mamma boongie boomie yaaah...! Yummm!!! On tap at O’Briens...good thou wild tastin’ ayieeeee!!! :) Re-rate May 2013: Pours gold from 22 oz bottle. Aroma of straw hops, grarefruit, sweet malts. Flavors of big grapefruit rind, cream of tartar bitterness, pepper. Overall big and bold with big astringency.
