San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz. bottle courtesy of agl108. Pours a hazy gold with a smallish off-white head. A powerful aroma of grapefruits, apricots, peaches, lemons, and resiny pine. Medium-bodied and sticky. Tongue-strippingly harsh. There is a touch of caramel upfront taste-wise, but the flavor is predominantly hoppy. Loads of grapefruits, apricots, and peaches in the mix. A bit of warming alcohol throughout. Quite tasty.

Great I.P.A. This one was a bit travelled and I will definitely try it again and re-rate it fresh. fruity aromas and flavours, more diverse than the standard citrus/pine US IPA and nice underlaying maltiness.

Bottle. Pours yellowish golden, clear, sticky lacing and a head. Nose is big on citrusy hops, slight vanilla, some pine. Flavor is more of the same with bigger bitter astringency, very good.

A hazy golden beer with a small head. The aroma is amazing, it is wonderful with loads of fruit & some grass in there-lovely. After the aroma I was expecting the taste to match up to that aroma, but oddly it was not as great but still good with some of that fruit & grass showing up with a smooth ending. This IPA is all about aroma, aroma.

22 oz. bottle as an extra in a trade with fidelis83- thanks again, Jeremiah! Pours a cloudy gold color with a frothy eggshell white head that leaves a little lacing in the glass. Aroma is led by orange citrus and piney hops, followed by other fruit notes like mango and apricot, in addition to some floral and caramel notes. Flavor of pine resin, floral hops, orange and grapefruit citrus, caramel malts, and soap. Light-medium bodied, with fizzy carbonation and a malty mouthfeel and bitter finish. Very nice IPA.

Pours a nearly clear peachy orange with a 3 finger, chunky eggshell head that has great retention. Aroma is citrus, big mango and tropical notes, tart pitted fruit, pine sap, pear, light caramel a touch of floral honey, vanilla and sweetened cereal. Flavor is caramel and a hint of biscuit up front, quickly overshadowed by a big bunch of bitter orange, rind covered grapefruit, bready yeast, hints of pine and potpouri floral notes. Finishes with bitter citrus, faint fruity sweetness and a little woody hops. Palate is pretty light bodied, somewhat creamy on entry, dry in the middle and very dry, even astringent to the finish with a light, moderately sharp carbonation to break things up. I definitely enjoyed this IPA, but it’s a little to dry and bitter in it’s extremely long finish. Fantastic aroma though.

Bottle: Poured a hazy orangey color ale with a large frothy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrus hops with deep caramel malt backbone is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by loads of citrus hops with some floral undertones though no grapefruit notes and a deep and solid caramel malt backbone with balanced sweetness level. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done with great balance between malt and hops.

Bottle - Man, if this beer tasted as good as it smelled, it would be one of my all-time faves. As it stands, it’s still pretty good. Pours light amber with small white head. Aroma is fresh, bright melon hops with a honey sweetness that reminds me of Hopslam. Taste is maltier than the smell, enough to balance it all out, but much grassier and bitter on the finish. Smooth and velvety carbonation make it easy to drink. Had this at a tasting, but would love to try a full bottle (or three) of this.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2014 Light Golden honey color, just very slightly cloudy with small head that lasts and just a little lacing on Tap at Mad Mex. Very nice full mouth with all kinds of hops for good balance. Funky aromatic mop tastes and of course a great bitter clean finish 2011 Bottle every bit as good except lacing was great too. 6/14 On tap light golden color and seemed not as big. still a good drink
