COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Very consistent, right now I’m drinking this on a nightly basis. This is pretty much IPA perfection, and is pretty much everything I want in an IPA. Decidedly better in bottle than on tap. Unfortunately I can’t find it in bottle anywhere other than Julio’s Liquors. Will stock up soon for the summer before going back home, thinking ~20 bottles, ~$200, hope that will be enough.

Clear amber; medium frothy white head; appetizing appearance. Incredible aroma, lots of grapefruit, passionfruit. Easy to gulp down; medium bitterness, white grapefruit, slightly powdery texture. On the dry side but carrying a lot of flavor. This hits you in the same way that peeling a grapefruit releases its aromatics. Exceptional IPA.

translucent gold with a thick dense head. medium-full body with high carbonation.

aroma: bright citrusy apricot slight-pine hops, sweet pale malt with a rather helles-like character.

taste: grassy piney hop bitterness, a definite woody note, pale malt, mild minerality, and a touch of yeastiness.

Always wanted to try this - finally - supremely balanced - quite a malt bite to it but lovely hop load - wish I could get a regular dose here in Oz....! But our Hop Hog just beats it for me.

This is a near perfect beer. Smell and taste the fruit. Apricot holds true to the description. Great tasting IPA but don’t be deceived. This is not your typical IPA. This one is a rarity.

This reminds me of two of my other all-time favorite IPAs with the great parts of each blended together; Port Wipeout and Nugget Nectar. It has a great floral, fresh hop flavor that sticks to your palate. Unmatched freshness and plenty of citric and somewhat sweet hop flavors make up the profile but there are many subtleties. Why don’t I live in California?

Poured a hazy orange with a thick 3 finger head. Nice lacing. Aroma is incredible, citrus and floral hops. Light to medium body. Light to medium carbonation. Good mix of grapefruit, mango and pine. Very drinkable. This just might be my favorite IPA yet.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2013 Holy cow, this might be my new favorite beer. Smooth and delicious with a juicy grapefruit aroma. Oozes hops, and delicious IPA flavor. Incredible. VERY smooth drinking for such a big beer. If this were more readily available, I’d drink it all the time. Near perfection in my book. I’ve never had anything better.

Bottle; shared many thanks with Angelo. WOW. Massive hoppy nose, hold out so well in the fridge, great lacing, slightly hazy coppy pale appearance, lovely yeast clean yeast strain, strong tropical fruits and grapefruit, really big and bold and aggressive on the tongue, lovely US bittereness, hops are just bang on gorgeous, I enjoyed this more than Pilny, baby this rocks. Loads of candy, great dry fruity finish, succulant down the throat and damn damn drinkable. One hell of an insane top big bold US ipa which should be setting titanic waves accross the industry. Stunning. Thanks mate. Legend. Damn I need to cool down.
