COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2012 the aroma right off the bat was the citrus of the hops and as it warmed some i picked up the apricot and peach...what a wonderful scent to have in this beer...medium bodied and smooooooth...hops do no over power this beer at all..the citrus flavor and the apricot are forefront on this one and the smoothness as it goes down. on the back end you do get a bit of the lemon blended with the bitterness of the hops and it works...very very good beer.

Pours clear copper with a big puffy beige head, very good lacing, excellent retention. Aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral notes, bread, grass. Medium body, creamy. Lightly sweet, a hint of citrus, full bitter finish, but not over-the-top. Nice fruity-hop IPA.

Appearance: clear light orange, with a finger of near white creamy head. Aroma: smelled pretty good--grapefruit, orange pith, resin, pine, floral honey, light graham cracker, apricots (marmalade?). Taste: okaaaay--grapefruit, mango, pineapple, maybe some passion fruit, with light caramel, then a wave of apricot and pine. Finish: lingering bitterness, palate seems almost watery. Notes: Clearly mine will be an apostate opinion, but this to me just didn’t live up to the hype. Especially when compared to similar items like Hopslam or Two Hearted, or even Dogfish 120, it just didn’t compare. Plan to try again, based on reputation. Bottle from Total Wine & More, Fairfax, Virginia (Pickett Center).

Near clear straw colour pour. Small lasting light beige head. Sadly it is clear right away that this is an old bottle.. I can see that this was great once but it has become a malty Sculpin I’m afraid... I get some fruity hops on the nose but a pretty malty base on the palate. Potentially a much higher rating but have to settle for 3.8 now. I’ll be back. I hope.

Grapefruit hoppy aroma come from this clear pale yellow brew. Sweet grapefruit taste with an underlying bitterness which combines well with the light body and crispness of this ipa

Bottle to tall glass. Appearance: light golden color. Medium white head. Aroma is pine hops, citrus, grass, . Taste is also pine, hops, citrus, grass. Touch of ash. Very smooth and well balanced. Feel is light, medium carbonation. A nice beer. Thought I had rated this a few months ago on my last 6-pack, but I saw I did not when rating the grapefruit version.

Gold in color with tiny bubbles rising to the surface. Off white head that froths around the top and settles to a slight layer of bigger bubbles. Lacing is evident along the edges of glass as it slides down. Smell is of pine and some citrus is found in the background. Tastes of pine, grass, citrus and maybe some bitter hops are dancing on the tongue. Smooth on the palate and slightly creamy with the bitterness finishing it off. Overall, a fantastic IPA to indulge upon!
