San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Clear brilliant oranges under a slightly off-white head which fades slowly and purposefully into a thin collar bordering a soft blanket. Lovely layers of lace linger and remain mostly undisturbed with a few teasatory swirls.
Nose: Massive grapefruit, key lime, and lemon esters abound take whole fruits, cut, peel, squeeze, enjoy. Grapefruit is the dominant citrus which directs and carries the key lime and lemon. Pine needles and fir trees underneath. Whisper of mint leaf in the back. Crunchy white table crackers. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass as far as the nose can smell in-between row after row of citrus trees equally dew-dropped with fruit hanging low.
Palate: Grapefruit abounds pink, white, and yellow fresh, tart, sweet, and bright. Mint, fir trees, and pine needles in the finish. Bracing parching cleansing finish. Cut dew-dropped green grass. Closing the eyes I envision myself amidst rows of citrus trees hanging heavy and damp forests of vivid green fir and pine trees. Crisp, clean, and brilliant. Rind lingers atop my tongue after each swallow.
Final Thoughts: Id drunk many a glass of Sculpin from Ballast Point before I realized I had yet to take tasting notes. Oops. Guess Ill just have to suffer through another glass, and so I did and here we are now. Amidst it all I seem to have developed a mighty thirst and I know exactly why. Make mine a Sculpin, please and thanks.

One of my favorite IPAs. Very fragrant with fruity hops and really well balanced with a nice bitterness to the finish. Price point is only major downfall of this beer. Have only had this one in cans.

Poured from 2 bombers into a pint glass. This is the first time I rated beer in the opposite, usually I go to places and buy beer, drink it, and then rate it. This time I found a highly rated beer, sought it out, and then drank it. Its funny how expectations change things because after reading the reviews of this beer I guess I must have been expecting a genie to fly out of the bottle and grant me three wishes. Well since this did not happen I will tell you what those wishes would have been. 1.) I wish this beer was $12 a six pack instead of $9 a bomber. b.) I wish this beer was a bit stronger maybe closer to 8% for the price. 3.) I wish I could taste any of the fruit listed on the side of the bottle that was mirrored in many of the reviews. I have had $100 a bottle cognac and can appreciate the reasons why it was 3 times the price, this is not the same, there are better IPA for cheaper. Its good not legendary.

This IPA does live up to the hype. Medium bodied with a nice mouthfeel. Hoppy with notes of grapefruit and a good bitter finish.

Bottle at Brewdog Stockholm, april 18th 2014. Hazy orange body with a nice white head. Finally getting to try this hyped beer, and it delivers. Citrusy pine aroma with a late apricot and peach kick, taste is floral with grapefruit and apricot, subtle balance of caramel, hay, strong bitter finish, with a dry clean lemon and apricot aftertaste. Very nice!

I really enjoyed this one...just a great balance of subtle sweet smoothness with the citrusy bite; top notch IPA for me; too bad it's 15.99 for a six pack. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Amazing flavor and aroma, dominated by citrus but with a lot of depth. A little fruit sweetness that balances the bitterness nicely. Not quite a DIPA, but a strong IPA - this level of ABV & IBUs really allows you to savor each flavor without anything being too overwhelming.

Alengrin (1716) - BELGIUM - SEP 4, 2014
Typical East Coast IPA with stable, coarse, off-white head and deep orange blonde colour, clear. Strong and resinous hops in the nose, tonic water, grapefruit peel, spices, bitter honey, orange zest, thyme, gin, white pepper, apple peel. Fresh citrussy onset with elegant and appetizing fruitiness, some apricot, minerals, slick and clean mouthfeel, with a very powerful, spicy, grapefruity, leafy hop bitterness drying the mouth and making for a very long and dry, complex finish without becoming too agressive. One of the best balanced IPAs I had so far, very memorable.
