San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Clear brilliant oranges under a slightly off-white head which fades slowly and purposefully into a thin collar bordering a soft blanket. Lovely layers of lace linger and remain mostly undisturbed with a few teasatory swirls.
Nose: Massive grapefruit, key lime, and lemon esters abound take whole fruits, cut, peel, squeeze, enjoy. Grapefruit is the dominant citrus which directs and carries the key lime and lemon. Pine needles and fir trees underneath. Whisper of mint leaf in the back. Crunchy white table crackers. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass as far as the nose can smell in-between row after row of citrus trees equally dew-dropped with fruit hanging low.
Palate: Grapefruit abounds pink, white, and yellow fresh, tart, sweet, and bright. Mint, fir trees, and pine needles in the finish. Bracing parching cleansing finish. Cut dew-dropped green grass. Closing the eyes I envision myself amidst rows of citrus trees hanging heavy and damp forests of vivid green fir and pine trees. Crisp, clean, and brilliant. Rind lingers atop my tongue after each swallow.
Final Thoughts: Id drunk many a glass of Sculpin from Ballast Point before I realized I had yet to take tasting notes. Oops. Guess Ill just have to suffer through another glass, and so I did and here we are now. Amidst it all I seem to have developed a mighty thirst and I know exactly why. Make mine a Sculpin, please and thanks.

(12 Oz. Btl) - Pours a nice wedding gown white frothy head. Strong aroma of pine resin. Body is a dark apricot color. Flavors of sour orange and apricot. Bitterness lingers on the palate. Nicely done. But, its definately a sipping beer!

Bomber to the dome. Pours very hazy Orange with a medium to small white pillowy head. Orange is orange zest and fruity. Tate is orange marmalade and jarmy. Very quenching with a light peppery finish with slight warning in the ears. Lots of bt in this one. Or fusels. Hips are pleasant and well done.

355ml bottle. Copper colored, clear, nice small bubbles in the glass, medium, high white head. The aroma of grass, cookies and honey. Fresh hoppy taste, fairly light body, smooth in the mouth, sweet notes of orange marmalade and bitter grapefruit peel. A rather dry and bitter finish, meduim long aftertaste. Nice one this!

Glorious. Pours a glowing orange gold with a thick frothy head of hop based froth. The nose is pure citrus and pine resin with a ton of lemon zest and pineapple. Fruity and sweet with light grapefruit bitterness and caramel malts. Good balance overall with a beauty hop profile that screams fresh.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Orange in color, not much in the way of head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Smooth to drink, bitter at first ending with a taste of pine and citrus.

Poured from a bomber, Copper body with a non-lingering head. Smells of citrus and pine. First notes are sweet to a nice hop bite. Another classic from Ballast Point. The feeling of this beer is heavy IPA due to the malt. Some doubles are easier to "session". Yet again this is not a beer to session, but to enjoy.
