COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Clear brilliant oranges under a slightly off-white head which fades slowly and purposefully into a thin collar bordering a soft blanket. Lovely layers of lace linger and remain mostly undisturbed with a few teasatory swirls.
Nose: Massive grapefruit, key lime, and lemon esters abound – take whole fruits, cut, peel, squeeze, enjoy. Grapefruit is the dominant citrus which directs and carries the key lime and lemon. Pine needles and fir trees underneath. Whisper of mint leaf in the back. Crunchy white table crackers. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass as far as the nose can smell in-between row after row of citrus trees equally dew-dropped with fruit hanging low.
Palate: Grapefruit abounds – pink, white, and yellow – fresh, tart, sweet, and bright. Mint, fir trees, and pine needles in the finish. Bracing parching cleansing finish. Cut dew-dropped green grass. Closing the eyes I envision myself amidst rows of citrus trees hanging heavy and damp forests of vivid green fir and pine trees. Crisp, clean, and brilliant. Rind lingers atop my tongue after each swallow.
Final Thoughts: I’d drunk many a glass of Sculpin from Ballast Point before I realized I had yet to take tasting notes. Oops. Guess I’ll just have to “suffer” through another glass, and so I did and here we are now. Amidst it all I seem to have developed a mighty thirst and I know exactly why. Make mine a Sculpin, please and thanks.

Great nose and a good initial taste with an acceptable body but quite a poor finish and aftertaste was lacking.

bottle at home courtesy of Saeglopur. bottled on 05.01.2015. orange, clear color. small white head. smells fruity, pines, grass, mango, citric. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. taste of pines, grass, some sweetness, citric, grapefruit, oranges, light herbal. citric / herbal bitter finish. citric notes and some pines on the aftertaste. quite nice, not as refreshing as other ipas though, probably because the carbonation is quite soft, or its not soo fresh anymore.

pours a semi murky gold with a decent bubbly off white head. Aroma is floral and fruity. Some orange citrus, also some mango or other tropical fruit. Taste is complex. Some orange and other fruits. Some moderate hop bitter kicks in, but there’s some faint sweetness there too. Long full finish with pleasant nasal linger. Solid.

355ml bottle. Clear, orangey, deep golden colour with average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, long lasting, fairly lacing, white head. Super clean, citrusy hoppy aroma, notes of grapefruit, orange, tangerine, lemon, pineapple. Crisp, bitter and citrusy hoppy aroma, more jelly bear-like than caramel malty background, notes of grapefruit, pineapple, orange, tangerine; some pine and sweaty resin in the deposit containing last sip (yeah!). A bit more "dirty" than the Grapefruit version, but still too clean for me (cf. Kernel as counterexample). Still a very good one, of course.

Cloudy amber with small beige head. Tremendous and huge aroma - sweetened grapefruit, strong malt, mango, passionfruit, paw paw/papaya. The taste is also huge, non-subtle, but awesome, with the same flavours that the smell assaults with. Light in body and ridiculously drinkable. In no way understated but an artful hop punch in the face.

12oz tap pour in The Goat Hill Tavern, Costa Mesa (Orange County) on 11th May 2015. Orange body, white topping. How do you like your hops? If the answer is by the hand full: this is a beer for you. No subtly here, just a very hoppy IPA with plenty of bitterness. I had the Sculpin Grapefruit next, no real citrus feel to this, the original version compared to the Grapefruit option.
