San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Clear brilliant oranges under a slightly off-white head which fades slowly and purposefully into a thin collar bordering a soft blanket. Lovely layers of lace linger and remain mostly undisturbed with a few teasatory swirls.
Nose: Massive grapefruit, key lime, and lemon esters abound – take whole fruits, cut, peel, squeeze, enjoy. Grapefruit is the dominant citrus which directs and carries the key lime and lemon. Pine needles and fir trees underneath. Whisper of mint leaf in the back. Crunchy white table crackers. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass as far as the nose can smell in-between row after row of citrus trees equally dew-dropped with fruit hanging low.
Palate: Grapefruit abounds – pink, white, and yellow – fresh, tart, sweet, and bright. Mint, fir trees, and pine needles in the finish. Bracing parching cleansing finish. Cut dew-dropped green grass. Closing the eyes I envision myself amidst rows of citrus trees hanging heavy and damp forests of vivid green fir and pine trees. Crisp, clean, and brilliant. Rind lingers atop my tongue after each swallow.
Final Thoughts: I’d drunk many a glass of Sculpin from Ballast Point before I realized I had yet to take tasting notes. Oops. Guess I’ll just have to “suffer” through another glass, and so I did and here we are now. Amidst it all I seem to have developed a mighty thirst and I know exactly why. Make mine a Sculpin, please and thanks.

Top notch IPA, might be the best regular IPA i have ever had. Pours clear light copper toned. Aroma is unique, SO much tropical notes and citrus it´s really insane, all this while still being able to pick up the malts in the back end. Taste is just as expected, rich tones of tropical frutis with hints of pinyness on the end. Just perfect amount of bitterness too. Had this one earlier this summer from the same batch as now, it might have lost some of it´s hop aromas but still leaves me wanting more. Insanely good IPA. Bottle from SB.

Bottle from Beverage Warehouse of Vermont (Winooski). Aroma: citrus, peaches (mango?), grapefruits, pines, resin. App: mid hazy-mid clear orange with small white head. Taste and palate: medium-heavy bitter, light body, average carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Awesome aroma, aroma has everything I’m looking for. Taste is pretty good too. If you can get it in can, than don’t think twice and take it. I preferred this beer in can over the bottle.

Color is golden, decent head supported by good lacing. Aroma is citrusy with tropical fruits (a hint of starfruit) - great aromas. Grapefruit and starfruit on the palate, with some caramel malts and leathery flavours reeling it back; a very hop driven beer though. Body is light/medium with moderate to high carbonation. Very punchy, long finish. I enjoyed the hell out of this brew and might just grab a 6 pack just to see how sessionable it is.

Ballast Point Sculpin has a thin, white head, a clear, slightly bubbly, orange-gold appearance, and fairly heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is of strong piney hop resin, grapefruit, and generalized citrus. Taste is of all that, with sweet, white bread, and strong, but certainly not harsh bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium, and there is a bit of an unfortunate chalky aspect. The finish is dry and easy drinking. RJT

Crisp grapefruit aroma. Amber body with a hint of gold. Bubbly head that lingers nicely about an inch thick. Bitter at first sip but not blasted away. Has a sweet malt background. Mild fruit finish.

Bottle at Dolphin Hotel, Orlando, 9th November 14. Poured almost clear, the aroma is bitter hops, citrus, grapefruit. Taste is smooth, good balance, bitter, not overly sweet, good IPA, didn’t blow me away through

Bottle poured into pint glass. Great looking, light, slowly dissapating head with strong citrus aroma. Tasted great, a for sure staple in my rotation and a recommendation for any IPA fan.

Extraordinary nose with pine, mango, citrus. A blast of bitter and hops and then ..... nothing. Swallow and it’s just a bland bitterness. A good beer but not among the classics.
