COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Clear brilliant oranges under a slightly off-white head which fades slowly and purposefully into a thin collar bordering a soft blanket. Lovely layers of lace linger and remain mostly undisturbed with a few teasatory swirls.
Nose: Massive grapefruit, key lime, and lemon esters abound – take whole fruits, cut, peel, squeeze, enjoy. Grapefruit is the dominant citrus which directs and carries the key lime and lemon. Pine needles and fir trees underneath. Whisper of mint leaf in the back. Crunchy white table crackers. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass as far as the nose can smell in-between row after row of citrus trees equally dew-dropped with fruit hanging low.
Palate: Grapefruit abounds – pink, white, and yellow – fresh, tart, sweet, and bright. Mint, fir trees, and pine needles in the finish. Bracing parching cleansing finish. Cut dew-dropped green grass. Closing the eyes I envision myself amidst rows of citrus trees hanging heavy and damp forests of vivid green fir and pine trees. Crisp, clean, and brilliant. Rind lingers atop my tongue after each swallow.
Final Thoughts: I’d drunk many a glass of Sculpin from Ballast Point before I realized I had yet to take tasting notes. Oops. Guess I’ll just have to “suffer” through another glass, and so I did and here we are now. Amidst it all I seem to have developed a mighty thirst and I know exactly why. Make mine a Sculpin, please and thanks.

22oz bomber. Pours a bright gold/orange color with a frothy white head. Aroma has a strong hop presence of citrus, pine, and tropical fruits. Taste has lots of citrus, and pine. Slightly resinous up front, and lots of grapefruit bitterness follows in the finish.

NYC Trip Beer #8. Nothing like following your very first AleSmith IPA with your first Sculpin. Between the two, I far preferred the Sculpin. Pours a pale orange with a lovely white head head. Beautiful Citrus scents and flavor. Well carbonated with a crisp hop finish. Bought some to bring back to the A. Bottle - Guilty Goose - New York, NY

A new top five ipa for me. Orange, lemon, grapefruit, and something like toasted peach jelly. Wonderfully flavorful bite, light body but perfect amount of alchohol gives the flavor depth. Yes sir.

Pours orange with tall white head. All sorts of citrus and melon wafting from the glass. Not very malty which is the way I like ’em. Mango, peaches, pineapple, absolutely delicious, almost perfection in a glass for this IPA lover. Rather expensive (like Ruination) but you bet I’ll be buying it now that it’s available in Texas. If you like the Southern California style of citrusy IPA, you will LOVE this one.

Pours clear light amber with an orange hue. Not much head, no real retention. Bubbles are streaming up from the bottom of the glass. Soapy wet lace. Nose is good deep caramel malt, breaddy and it smells really smooth. Hops are fruity and tropical. Mango, hints of citrus, very floral and tea like and just a touch of pine for depth. Peaches too. The malt is really captivating me and I love malt. Taste is scrumptious. It drinks light and fruity and like iced tea. Body is supple but not biting, carbonation is ample but soft. The malt is so smooth and offers plenty of bread and a little cracker. It doesn’t outshine the hops though which remain delicate as the fruit takes over the palate. It’s juicy and sweet. It isn’t too oily or resinous but it has a good bitter and it it’s almost dry but not quite. It has perfect balance and it isn’t too sweet and the bitter isn’t all there is.

This was so well done. The malt was immediate, always near at hand. The hops were civilized and cultivated in this drink. It was bold but not audacious. This was extraordinary.

Excellent, reminds me a lot of two hearted. Great citrus, great balance. One of the best ipas I had. Tasty, complex, balanced. I like a strong citrus flavor and nose like this one. Very reminiscent if a dipa, not sure where ipa ends and dipa begins...good nonetheless.

Looks a nice copper with lots of lace. Smells a bit oniony, with some tropical fruit notes, faint rubber smells. Weird. Tastes a bit rubbery at first followed bit fruity notes. Mouthfeel is rich and fine. Overall an over the top IPA with a bit too much hop extract, pellets to the point of sulfur. A good run of the mill IPA but nothing amazing as ratings suggest. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I know that we are not to rate on style, but purely on if we like it. Too bad. Even though I am not a fan of west-coast hop bombs, I must say that this is one of the best highly-hopped brews out there. Lots of apricot and citrus. Amazing aroma. Hard to find, but worth the search. Did I mention the aroma? Wow.
