Sea Monster Imperial Stout is a new version of an old favorite. This hearty stout is black as the abyss and clocks in at a whopping 10% ABV, a real monster. The flavors of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are complamented by a velvety smoothness from the addition of un-malted barley and oats. Colombus and Amarillo hops help to balance out the huge malt character of this flavor bomb. Be careful the alcohol is well hidden and will sneak up on you if you don’t watch out. Like most scary monsters, it can be a little intimidating, but have no fear.

Decent tan head with sticky lacing down the sides of the glass. Aroma is thick and massive malt, oat, a touch of roast/char, and earthy hops. Taste is coffee, chocolate, noticeable bitter hops, a raisin/malty sweetness toward the back, and alcohol. I’ve had this in bottles and via tap multiple times and it usually comes across as a bit rough. I believe this particular bottle is the most recent batch and it seems a bit smoother but I think it could use a few years in the bottle to even out. I’ll have to remember to grab one and stash it away.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly lasting. Body is black (non-opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (dark chocolate, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (apricot), with light notes of vanilla, cassis, and alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A simple but fairly solid rendition. Not a lot in the nose other than the usual stouty stuff, maybe a little berry, not terribly "Imperial", just a plain stout nose with a touch more alcohol. Decent balance, and maybe a little watery but fair mouthfeel. All in all pretty rudimentary and unexciting, but no flaws so that’s good.

My Bottom Line:
Milk chocolate and dried cranberries become roasted coffee beans and caramel until green hop resins, roasted bitterness and fruity acidity coalesce in the finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the darkest brown.
-This is one not of those new world impys. It is not sugar-heavy and is actually based on a blend of specialty malts and fermentation character which leads an intelligent, smooth interplay of fruity acidity and delicate roasted cereal flavors.
-A light alcohol bite accompanies the pleasant acidity and bitterness.
-This is complex and harmonious throughout.

Black pour with khaki head. Dark fruit, licorice, cocoa powder and moderate hops. Flavor is licorice and dark fruit, giving way to hops, roast malt and more licorice. Nice oatmeal mouthfeel.

Imperial stout with the addition of oatmeal helps smooth out this monster. Abv is well hidden, too well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
