3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber. Pours inky black with a medium tan head with good retention. Aroma is a little muted right now--hopefully it will open up--but itís a little doughy, a little like pepperoni pizza (WTF?), vanilla, toasted marshmallow. Taste is sweet and a little tart, finishing lightly bitter. Has a bit of an alcoholic chocolate milk flavor; tobacco/ash come out after it warms up. Mouthfeel is creamy, body is a little thinner than it should be for something of this caliber. This is good, but it seems pretty basic for an impy stout. Itís hard to believe that the same brewers who created such an unforgettable dark beer as Victory at Sea created such a pedestrian brew as this. Itís not bad--itís actually pretty good--just a little average after tasting that aforementioned beer right before this.

Bottle. Dark brown with a short brown head, some retention. Dark caramel and chocolate malt, coffee grounds, nougat aroma impression. Lightly nutty with subtler herbal cola / vanilla. Full bodied, rich and chewy and malty. Lightly sweet chocolate malt approach turning more to black malt / char late. Savory burnt toast / bread crustiness late, the finish is dry and bitter and quenching.

Not great....The Ballast Point IPA is better, and its rare that i would prefer any IPA to a stout.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Confused. I thought I had tried this before (draft) and loved it. Maybe not. Maybe the lower rating because this is a bottled in 2013 tried in 2014. Pours a deep dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is weak but pleasant: bread, floral, and leather. Palate is okay. Kind of lame.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle shared with my dad, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of chocolate, dark cocoa, roast, hints of caramel, toffee, some slight spicy notes into some nice coffee tones. Taste is a mix of chocolate, coffee, roast, hints of slight dark fruit into a bit of caramel, some earthy tones, finishing slightly roasted, bitter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz. bottle. Aroma of dark, roasty malts, sweetened coffee, dark chocolate, faint prune, toffee and molasses, tinge of green, floral hops in the background as well. Solid ebony in color with a very fine, lasting, khaki head and matching lace. Flavor profile is sweet, roasty, alcoholic and moderately bitter, with suggestions of chocolate cake, espresso, raisin and earthy, spicy hop. Effervescent, generously warming and lightly acidic on the palate, body is very full. Fairly average for the style, certainly not bad, though.
