Sea Monster Imperial Stout is a new version of an old favorite. This hearty stout is black as the abyss and clocks in at a whopping 10% ABV, a real monster. The flavors of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are complamented by a velvety smoothness from the addition of un-malted barley and oats. Colombus and Amarillo hops help to balance out the huge malt character of this flavor bomb. Be careful the alcohol is well hidden and will sneak up on you if you don’t watch out. Like most scary monsters, it can be a little intimidating, but have no fear.

Bomber. Pours inky black with a medium tan head with good retention. Aroma is a little muted right now--hopefully it will open up--but it’s a little doughy, a little like pepperoni pizza (WTF?), vanilla, toasted marshmallow. Taste is sweet and a little tart, finishing lightly bitter. Has a bit of an alcoholic chocolate milk flavor; tobacco/ash come out after it warms up. Mouthfeel is creamy, body is a little thinner than it should be for something of this caliber. This is good, but it seems pretty basic for an impy stout. It’s hard to believe that the same brewers who created such an unforgettable dark beer as Victory at Sea created such a pedestrian brew as this. It’s not bad--it’s actually pretty good--just a little average after tasting that aforementioned beer right before this.

Loads of anise in the nose and taste. Also in the nose is marshmallow, a bit of coffee, and dark chocolate. Appearance is dark, thin head, spotty lacing. Mouthfeel is oily, nice carbonation feel, the warmth is in the back, at the end. Pretty smooth and restrained considering it is 10% It is a nice sipper.

This is a great beer! So easy to drink. Near the top for imperial oatmeal stouts. Definitely grab again. My daughter picked it out based on only the angler fish on the bottle and although not overly hyped like the under performing sculptin ipa this came through! Good beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a thick black with a chocolate head. Aroma is of anise, coffee, cocoa powder, milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, and a little boozy. Taste is of sweet milk chocolate turning into caramel macchiato, with espresso, to a bitter bakers chocolate finish. Very smooth. Very velvety on the palate. Great beer.

Bottle probably a couple of years old. Black with a small tan head on top. Dark fruit, coffee, molasses, and a little chocolate in the scent. The dark fruit stands out most. The flavor follows, showing a strong dark fruit character with the introduction of some black licorice. The coffee sits in the background. Plenty of caramel and a touch of molasses here to sweeten it up much more than it needs to be, especially with the dark fruit already taking care of that. Light oats mingle in with some bitter chocolate but the whole package is much too sweet. As another reviewer points out, I probably should have opened this one up fresher although I don’t know if that would have made much of a difference. It’s somewhat oxidized and there’s not enough hops or roast character to counter all the sweetness.

I believe this is a 2011 bottle. Aroma has quite a dark fruit character including raisin, plum, prune and fig. Medium roast with some licorice. Medium light cardboard oxidation and hints of honey. Light chocolate notes and moderate roast. Pours black with some faint, dark brown highlights and a small, medium thick, dark tan head. Head recedes quickly to the edges where a thin film lingers a bit. Light lacing and medium long legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with medium light chocolate and moderate roast. Some light dark fruit character with some fig, prune and raisin. Moderate oxidation with a bit of cardboard and honey. Moderate bitterness and a hint of alcohol spice. Slightly vegetal character. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall this is definitely a beer that does not stand the test of time. The age really muted the malt character and accentuated the fruit notes and oxidation. Some bitter chocolate and coffee but it has definitely faded.

Dense brown top. Black. Sweetish nutty aroma with notes of milk chocolate. Silky mouthfeel. Full body. Complex and well balanced. Gently sweet cocoa, espresso, dark malts, dark fruits and citussy bitterness. Nice all over. [Shared bottle at RBNG2014]

Good. Not on the same level as their imperial porter but still good. Strong roasted and coffee aroma. Very dark with a tan head. Bubbles covered the glass. Weighty and smooth but carbonated higher than most of this style. Solid blend of flavors leaning toward the malty end. A touch of coffee and chocolate as well. Enjoyed it. Alcohol covered well.
