Sea Monster Imperial Stout is a new version of an old favorite. This hearty stout is black as the abyss and clocks in at a whopping 10% ABV, a real monster. The flavors of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are complamented by a velvety smoothness from the addition of un-malted barley and oats. Colombus and Amarillo hops help to balance out the huge malt character of this flavor bomb. Be careful the alcohol is well hidden and will sneak up on you if you donít watch out. Like most scary monsters, it can be a little intimidating, but have no fear.

From a 22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Inky black with a moderate brown head that dissipated over the next two minutes. Nice lacing on the glass as I drink this. Aroma is first chocolate, then a mellow roasted coffee takes over. Hint of caramel. Lightly bitter, full body and thick on the palate. A little sticky. Very nice, but just short of great. If only a couple of itís traits would have been more aggressive, especially in the aroma, this would have easily been a 4+ for sure. That said, itís very enjoyable and I think would be easy to drink for someone who is not accustomed to imperial stouts. 10% ABV, but no hint of alcohol at all. Iíve read other reviews that said this was rather boozy. But those were likely other versions of this beer that are brewed in whiskey and rum barrels as special editions. Trust me ... the alcohol is completely hidden, which to me, in a beer, is a good thing.

appearance: silky near black, with a big, creamy, medium tan head. aroma: milk and dark chocolate, molasses, soy sauce, espresso, herbal hops. taste: dark chocolate pudding, espresso, vanilla, wood, caramel, molasses, soy sauce, slightly citrus hops. finish: fulsome, silky, with boozy heat not shy about joining the party. notes: A big, rich stout. I like them a little more balanced, a little less boozy. Still excellent. Bottle from Sarah for Beerthday 2015.

Bottle that I had purchased several years ago. Even though the "enjoy by" date was a year and half ago, age has not harmed this beer! Pours an opaque black with a tan head that dissipates rapidly leaving a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma is coffee forward. Taste follows suit with undertones of chocolate, annis and dark fruits. Overall, a very good imperial stout.

A very nice imperial. Dark brown pour, frothy tan head. Palate more like storm king - on the regular stout end, but flavor is imperial. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate notes. Decent finish. Very drinkable 10% alcohol well hidden.
