3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From a 22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Inky black with a moderate brown head that dissipated over the next two minutes. Nice lacing on the glass as I drink this. Aroma is first chocolate, then a mellow roasted coffee takes over. Hint of caramel. Lightly bitter, full body and thick on the palate. A little sticky. Very nice, but just short of great. If only a couple of itís traits would have been more aggressive, especially in the aroma, this would have easily been a 4+ for sure. That said, itís very enjoyable and I think would be easy to drink for someone who is not accustomed to imperial stouts. 10% ABV, but no hint of alcohol at all. Iíve read other reviews that said this was rather boozy. But those were likely other versions of this beer that are brewed in whiskey and rum barrels as special editions. Trust me ... the alcohol is completely hidden, which to me, in a beer, is a good thing.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22o bottle pours inky dark brown black with a finger of offwhite head. Nose has big roast dark fruit and bitter chocolate with some dry licorice and a touch of char. Medium body. Taste is similar with big charred dark cocoa with a touch of fruitiness. Finishes dry with medium high bitterness, roasty dark licorice fruit and some round malt char. Ok. Doesnít touch Victory at Sea.

3.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap it is really smooth but looses some of the rich flavor. In the bottle it is more harsh but the rich flavor is great. Deep black and heavy tongue feel.

[2/20/15] Draught at Ballast Point Old Grove in San Diego. Black with a nice tan head. Aroma of licorice, roast, chocolate and some fruit notes. Roasty flavor with licorice, a bit of chocolate, a fruity touch and a bitter finish. medium to full-bodied.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2013 bottle, from March of that year.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking black color with a slim fingerís worth of white to off white foamy head that quickly dissipated leaving some light clingy lacing.
The smell had a sweet cocoa to sticky licorice, light roast of coffee and an ample amount of anise settling nicely underneath my nose.
The taste was mainly sweet and roasty. A light vanilla did help to balance out. An even-ed out delicate delivery of balanced vanilla licorice boozy aftertaste lead to a semi - sweet and wet finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation, what carbonation, is it there? Not really, but for the style and age, Iím not worried. Itís good stuff.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good D/IS that I would have again.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Yes please, Iíll have some more of that. Dark, inky pour with a big, thick dark tan head. Smells like dry unsweetened cocoa and coffee and some other roasted goodness. Smooth, velvety on the tongue, powerful chocolate and coffee and everything you are looking for in a big, unapologetic stout. Lots of alcohol balanced by so much of everything else. I will buy this again (and again...) Beautiful beer.

Lots of roasty musk and a good dose of coffee and dark chocolate. Pours black with good head and lacing. Medium bitter finish with some caramel sweetness, rich on palate. Creamy texture. Tap at Churchkey.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
22 oz bottle. Aroma: malty, roasty, and boozy, with hints of chocolate and leather. Taste/Palate: creamy and sweet; finishes slightly astringent. Best beer I have ever had. Seriously.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Very dense and dark with a thick head & great lace. Very dark roasted nose. Coffee, cocoa but also a huge lift of hops. Looks like bittering hops. Inky. Char. very dense. Dry to off dry. Not sour but very bitter.
This beer had massive flavor but it lacks the creamy, chocolate of some other great Imperial Stouts. Itís a different twist and one that uses hops to balance the over the top flavor.
Fair showing of hops aromatically.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark brown in color with virtually no head or lacing. Smells of bittersweet chocolate, coco, and booze. No carbonation to speak of with this mostly full bodied brew. Tastes of chocolate, burnt wood, booze, and maybe a little coffee. Overall, a pretty good stout.
