Draft at O’Brien’s. Black, small off white head. Bittersweet oatmeal stout with some mild bourbon barrel, subtle coffee, and a bit of a twang- barrel oxidation or unclean lines?Medium/full body, smooth.

Sample at the Linda Vista location. This beer pours brownish-black with a thin and bubbly light brown head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon and chocolate, along with some malt in the background. Rich body with flavors of whiskey and malt primarily, and notes of chocolate and hops supporting. The finish is oaky and malty with a lingering alcohol aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

I really like this. Sea Monster is a bit bland for my taste on it’s own, but when aged in the JD whiskey barrels, this stout really comes around. Great thick, creaminess with a moderate sour taste from the JD. I’m a big fan.

On tap at brewery. Black with a creamy tan head. Chocolate and whiskey aroma. Bright palate. Tangy citrus, milk chocolate, roasty, and mildly whiskey taste.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 FoolishMortal (981) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 21, 2007
Tap at 11th anniversary. Opaque black with a thick tan nitro head. Heavy hazelnut and bakers chocolate aroma. Mocha, chocolate flavors up front. Prominant vanilla, liquor character combines with rich malty sweetness. Nutty sweetness lasts in the finish, with hints of coffee and the last vestiges of the barrel characters. Mouthfeel is heavy, slick, and smooth.

Tried from tap at Ballast Point’s 11th anniversary celebration. Bourbon barrel on nitro. The most popular with the crowd. Pitch black color. Great tan microbubble head (of course with nitro), but reduced aroma from the nitro. When tasted, the aroma is more apparent..some bourbon, sweet malt, and some vanilla. Sweet. delicious. Super easy to drink. No roastiness. My second favorite of the event.

On tap @ Stone for "Meet the brewers of CA" night (on nitro) - IMO, the best beer of the evening. Pours a dark brown color with a thin creamy light tan head that lasts to the finish. Nice lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and oak/bourbon. Flavor was exactly the same. No one component overpowered the other. A very smooth, medium to full body beer. My wife really liked this one too. An excellent beer.

Tap at the brewery’s 10th anniversary celebration. Love the nitro display for this pour. Aroma of roasty malt, coffee and a hint of bourbon. Flavor follows nose with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Very nice.

On tap at the 10 th Anniversary party. Had it on nitro. A beautiful black pour with a creamy white head. It was very smooth and tasty, definitely a well down imperial
3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 alafito (334) - tijuana, MEXICO - OCT 15, 2006
Tap at 10th Aniv. Poured like tar but disaponingly watery when sipped. Way too much bouron and oak in the flavor, i think they even poured some bourbon into this. Lots of fruits and mollases too. I drank this side to side with the Marlin Porter witch was much better. Not very Stoutlike flavor lots of fruit, vannilla, bourbon and honey, and lacking in roasted malts, smokeyness, chocolate ,hops and a strong body. Its a low quality stout with some bourbon poured into it. The aroma and appearance fooled me though.
