Had on tap sometime during RBSG 2008 in SoCal. Smell was mealy with some peaty alcohol apparent. Ruby black in the glass with a dusting of head. I really enjoyed what I termed "whiskey sourness" in this beer, a complement to the dark malts. I tasted apricots and sour apples in the acidity, corn and roastiness in the malts. The sourness and carbonation prick lingered on the tongue after the swallow, which was enjoyable. The carbonation overall was perfect, fizzy then softly foamy. Slightly oily on some sips, but overall the beer was nicely expansive for being so big. I remember this one getting mixed reviews, but mine was positive.

On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe for Big Wood 2013, pours black with a medium creamy tan head. Nose brings out intense whiskey notes, with subdued vanilla and a touch of roast. Flavour is insanely whiskey-dominated - there’s nothing left of the base beer here. Something weird about this that makes it difficult to drink - maybe some aniseed / mouthwash. Quite boozy and barrel-heavy. Difficult to drink much off. Off the mark to me.

Pours dark clear brown with tan head that dissipates quickly. Smells of woodsy and coffee notes. Tastes of bourbon with light coffe and cream. Ends the perfect kind of coffee bitter.

Tap at Churchill’s for SDBW. Pours ink, low foam. Nose is bigger, sweet bourbon, sweet cherry, mild tomato paste. Taste is stickier, sweet cherry, thicker butterscotch candy, Drinkable but sweet and boozy. No finesse.

Draft. From notes. Loads of bourbony oak with chocolate and vanilla. I could easily drink this every day.

On tap at Aces and Ales in Las Vegas. The bourbon aroma is overwhelming and in a good way. Tastes of bourbon and and SMG (sweet malty goodness). A little bit of alcohol burn, besides that it's fantastic. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On cask at rock n brew in manhattan beach. Pours black with a thick tan head which was gone quickly. Slight lacing but not terribly interesting in that regard. Cask temperature helped get t the aromas quickly. Obvious liquor and chocolate. Barrel was prominent. Aroma and flavor similar but a bit more bitter than i expected. Palate was ok but not what i would expect from a beer this big. Certainly a good beer and worth imbibing

On tap at the Moth. Black with a tan head. The aroma is full of whiskey and chocolate. The flavor is similar. I get some charred oak notes at first, but those are quickly replaced by some big chocolate and whiskey notes. There is also a little bit of anise like I get in the regular version of this beer. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On tap at Old Grove. Pours a pitch black with a small kakhi head with decent lacing. Aroma is of bourbon, roasted malts, bakers coco, and some dark fruits. Taste is of bourbon, roasted malts, coco, some coffee, dark fruits caramel, some molasses, and a little booze. Has a medium-full body with a creamy, velvety mouthfeel, and a semi bitter, slighty boozy finish. Overall, a tasty BBA stout that is actually better then the orginal.
