Draft @ the brewery. Pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. Has a fruity malty smoky aroma. Fruity malty smoky flavor. Has a swetish malty grainy smoky finish.

Tap @ Toronado San Diego... Poured cloudy, bright, pale yellow with a moderate, fizzy, white head. Nose had a hint of smoked meats. Had malt sweetness with charred ashes and smokiness through the middle to the finish. Some sweetness for balance, low hop character and a moderate yeast tone. But quite clean with a lingering smokiness in the finish.

Draft fron Valhalla. Golden pour white head - its a helles. Classic rauchbier bacon bits. I liked it.

Growler from Bierkraft. (I have the beginnings of a cold). Hazy pale straw color with white head. Bready citrusy grassy aroma with mild underlying smoke. Mildly sweet with unexpected prominent citrus sweet and tangy bitterness and yeasty and underlying smoke. Nice refreshing light body and carbonation. This really didn’t taste like a helles to me, but it was still very good. It seemed more like a hoppy golden smoked ale (which is what the fantastic Barrier Frau Blucher is). My friend’s wife, who doesn’t give a crap what style it is supposed to be, said it was "fantastic."

Tap. Pours clear yellow with a medium white head and nice lacing. Aroma is a lot like smoked fish, strangely enough. Taste is smoky (not fishy :)), with notes of grain. Lightly sweet, no real bitterness, with the smoke coming through on the finish with a sweet note. Light bodied and interesting.

Interesting that they can create it, but not my thing. It’s a thin body brown beer that tastes like pork bbq. not for me.

On tap at Sam’s, Durham, during the May smoked brew bonanza. Very nice pour, vibrant gold and well carbonated. Nose was intriguing, with understated smoke complementing yeast and moderate hops. Some lager characteristics came to the fore a bit more during the tasting, giving things a brightness and occasional bitterness that brought out different dimensions of the smoke. Enjoyed it.
