COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Pointís original Master Brewer Peter AíHearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, itís a great bridge beer into the Sour Styleís.

>> Sour wrench. Huge pink foam, clear deep purple. Great retention. Nose is fresh berry blend, sugary blackberry, robust. Taste is quite thin, soapy, some sour mash character. No acidity at all, seltzer type soda bland body. Slight butyric note. Needs work.

I have been loving sours but this one just isnt doing it for me. Could be the carbonation, which is nearly absent. Still not sure if I should ask for a refund. I'll just consider it extremely light natural fermentation and go with it. The blueberry mash flavor is very apparent, definitely in the realm of fruity. Drinking at Pine Box in Bushwick. Will get the other sour next time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg at the Little Italy taproom, 12/11/14. Clear claret with no head. Nose is tangy berries, sweet notes with a little sourness, tartened blackberries. Taste comprises tangy blackberry, straw, subtle acidity, red berry sours. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a gentle puckering effect. Decent enough íLinner, would have preferred it tuned up a little more in a sharper more acidic sense.

Straightforward. The blackberry is strong on the nose, followed by simple, lactic sour. Refreshing.

On tap at Ballast Point Tasting Room. This was batch 11. Pours pinkish red with a thin pink head. Aroma is berries with sweet blackberries. Flavor is sour and very tart. Very bitter. Decent but bitterness overpowers. Overall refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap @ Bagby. Dark cherry color with no head (or carbonation). Tart, medicinal sweetness and berry in the aroma. Taste a bit dryer than the aroma suggests with tart notes, sourness, and some berry accents. Somewhat clean mouthfeel. Not bad in small doses.

Not too sour, just a bit of tartness underlying the pretty nice blackberry. The fruit tastesd and smells natural, and itís a pretty good warm weather brew."
