COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours hella red with a huge pink and white head and a fruity aroma. There is a sour berry flavor with a very dry finish. Not as sour as the name implies nad a bit thin on malt.

On tap at RnH with Andy and Pixa. Dark red/wine pour with small head. Aroma is juicy berries and slight tartness with a kind of wateriness to it. Taste is blackberry and other berries, red fruits. Not a crazy palate but tastes good with very little aftertaste. Not sour.

Tap at rattle n hum. Pour is ruby with some colorful froath... Looks like a frambroise. Taste is tart berry flavor... Notes of pomegranate and blackberry. Crisp and refreshing, juicy, somewhat flavorful but lacking much complexity.

UPDATED: JUL 10, 2012 Draft at rattle. Pours a deep hazy purple red body with thin pink lacing. Aroma is light fruits. Mouthfeel is light but finishes dry with light fruit tart notes. Nearly completely different beer on draft. Sour fruit comes through much more, especially in the nose. +0.7

In taster at urge gastro pub. Looks cherry red with off red head. Smells of sour. Tastes of sour at first then some berry complexions. Overall 7.5 of 10. I am getting more and more used to the sour style.

tap at homebrew location-pours almost purple with a fizzy pink head-nose is sour berries, very tart. Lots of tart berry flavors but a bit on the husky side. Its a pretty cool beer and i have never had anything like it. lite sourness on the finish but mostly tart berries-really cool! pretty well put together. finish fades into long grain notes. Pretty decent!~

No lacing, pretty but cloudy purple. Very brambly fruit and clean, quite sour at first and full bodied. Nice.

I had this sometime during RBSG in SoCal a couple-few years ago. Intense nettle-y sour on the first sip, with lingering berry skins, nettles, lemon seed, and spinach in the finish. The blackberries are wonderfully full in the middle, rich and bursting like you crushed an actual berry in your mouth after taking a sip of beer. The finish also had some kriek-ish, yeasty things going on. The smell was dominated by dark berries with a note of cherries in milk; it reminded me of Kasteel Kriek. Head is big and foamy pink, just like Todd "daSilky1", who wrote on this page of my notes, "I Love pre-pubescent girls." I didn’t notice that annotation until I got home, so I could never ask him if he was speaking for himself, or immitating me. And now we’ll never know . . .

Growler from the Home Brew Mart. Pours a beautiful raspberry hue, almost like liquid ruby joy. No foam but lots of bubbles racing up the side of the glass. Aroma is all dark musky berries, rasp, black, cran... it’s like they’re all in here, along with a pleasantly musty, just the edge of sour, scent. Super sour initial taste, like cranberry juice with tart apple infusion, sweet kiwi mixture, and a blast of blackberries at the end. Whew! Worth the trip and the wait. Great, great stuff. Unlike a lot of sours, one I could keep on drinking. The only knock on it is that the finish seems a little muddled... Not really, just not what it could be. Still, top, top-notch stuff.
