Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

Pours reddish pink with white head. Aroma is tart berries. Taste starts strong with tart/sour berries but quickly fades to an adjunct maltness. Finish is strangely bland. Body is thin. Drain pour.

On draft poured a dark red color, aromas of tart blackberries. Flavor is the same but not overpowering tartness. It was a nice blend of blackberries and tartness that went well on a hot day in the sun.

Nothing too exciting about this beer. There was nothing wrong with it but nothing to stand out. Seem fruit and tartness in a red murky liquid.

Tap at the ColLAboration Winterfest 2012. It pours ruby, with a thin pink head. The nose is sweet blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry. The taste is sour blackberry, blackcurrant, Granny Smith apple, pear, red apple, raspberry and wood, with pear in the finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Nice fruity tartness. Not particularly complex, but utterly drinkable. Delicious.

Draught at Tadg’s. Glowing blood crimson with lace. Aroma of blackberry, with slight funk and acid. Super dry flavor with light yogurt and wood, blackberry, and a nice sourness. Some caramel Interesting and drinkable with good sourness and dryness overall.

Draft at Beer Revolution - Absolutely gorgeous pinkish head. Ruby red body. Aroma of a milk shake. Clear sour flavor of berries. Not sour yeasts though. Thinnish body. Tartness on the palate in the aftertaste. Reminds me of a huckleberry beer I made once.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2015 Draft. Pours almost purple. Rich berry notes, relatively mild sweetness, light acidity, and a fresh tart fruity finish. Very enjoyable.

sample at GABF on 9/30/11. red / pink pour with small white head. cherry / blackberry nose with a light sourness. light to medium bright body. more light fruit notes throughout - semi-sour. dry sweet finish.

Fruity, winelike aroma. Rouge pour. Fresh fruit and grain taste - sour cherry, blackberry. Nice. On tap at Rattle’n’Hum.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours hella red with a huge pink and white head and a fruity aroma. There is a sour berry flavor with a very dry finish. Not as sour as the name implies nad a bit thin on malt.
