COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

( Draught ) Pours a deep red body with a small pink head. Aroma of mustiness, garbage can, and fruity syrup. Flavor of sugary syrup, earth, and sweet berries with a dry finish.

Stone Sour Fest. What a giant mess of a beer. Not much aroma (turns out a to be a good thing), and just a horrible flavor. Muddled, vinegary, nasty rancid mess going on here. Would much rather spend all day drinking PBR or even Bud Light than this nastiness. Avoid.

On tap at the Stone Sourfest. Pours with a red body and an off-white head. Aroma of merlot, grapes, wheat. Taste is apple, cinnamon, bread, vinegar and berries. Kind of bland on that day with so many other great beers. Light bubbles.

Draught at the brewery. red color with a light pink head. Rotting fruit and berry aroma. Sour berries and sour grain with a dry, very grassy finish. Light bodied with high carbonation. Grass was really the dominant note here, with some sour old fruit. Not that great.

Growler courtesy of hophead22. Pours ruby red with a nice pinkish head. Smells of berries and dry malt. Tastes of dry malt, some berries, some nice tartness. Resfreshing mouthfeel and finish.

Tap at ACBF 2009: Ruby pour with a dense pink head- Sour mash aroma with lots of lactic character- tart berries (yogurt like). Fluffy feel but a vacant flavor- slightly tart fruity character but mainly nondescript. A hint of vague lactic character on the back. Not bad, just very boring and lacking depth.

Draft. An unclear dark red beer with a thin pinkish head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt and blackberries. The flavor is sweet and acidic with strong notes of blackberries, leading to a dry and lightly tart finish, where the berry notes lingers.

On draft at ACBF09. Wow, this was a frightening beer. Pours a clear red/brown with a small white head. Aroma of old cheese, rancid yogurt, and sweaty socks. Nasty. Flavor of sweet blackberry initially with the yogurt/cheese/sweat finish. Basically it tasted like blackberry yogurt, which I wasn’t really a fan of. A little better flavor than aroma, but still...Yuck. 4/4/6/3/11 (2.8/5)
