COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Pointís original Master Brewer Peter AíHearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, itís a great bridge beer into the Sour Styleís.

My Bottom Line:
Pomegranate-like fruitiness grows into blackberries before awkward lactic emanations fall into a dry and mildly tart finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-Sumptuous foam crowns the pink-laced luminous red haze.
-The aroma had strange yogurt-like funk coming from the sour mash (I suppose). Not the most appealing incarnation of lactobacillus, letís say...
-Lots of small bubbles help drinkability.
-The fruit character mostly comes off as juicy and simple.
-With a name like Sour Wench, I admit I was expecting more tartness (which I got in their wonderful Hout Black Currant though).

Raspberry and cranberry flavors mixed in with the blackberry flavors. Drank on tap at the brewery. Red pink in color, very fizzy. An excellent beer.

Appearance: Pours a clear maroon red with a white ring of head.

Aroma: Tart and sweet berry goodness.

Taste: Dark ripe blackberry with a tart finish.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy and refreshing.

Overall: Easy going, very easy on the sour to the point that I wouldnít consider it a sour at all. Great summer drinking.

Crushed with Honkeybra at GABF. Eh, definitely sour but not very pleasant. Cloying and without the mouth-watering goodness of a decent sour ale, or niceness of a solid fruit beer.

2008 version. A beet red ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a light sour berry with light wooden notes. In mouth, a rather weak and dissapointing sour ale, with light cherries, a bit of epsom salt, chalkey notes, boring. On tap at Ballast Point 13 Anniv. Beer Festival , Oct. 24 2009.

Sampled at GABF. Red pour with pink head. Aroma of sour fruit, Iím guessing blackberries. Lightly sour, somewhat sweet. Iím not going to hate too much on this, because for a fruit beer its pretty decent.

On tap at GABF 2009. Next to Victory at Sea, this was really not all that impressive. Bright red in color with a small pinkish head. Aroma is blackberries and raspberries, a little like a fruit candy, sweet and only mildly sour. Flavor is not too exciting, a little funky with blackberries and other berries, red grapes, sugar, and a little tartness. Body is medium-light and palate is rather boring for what is supposed to be a sour beer.

Pours ruby. Nose is lactic tartness, funk, sweet ripe berries, sugar, wine, grain. Flavor is slightly thin but pretty tart, unripe fruit tartness, grapey, berries.
