Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

On tap At O’Brien’s in San Diego on 08/01/2008 on the RBSG Friday Pub Crawl. Cloudy red body with a medium frothy pink head. Vinegar and fruity aroma. Very dry fruit flavor, fades into fruit punch. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

From tap at OBrians. Pours hazy to murky purple with a creamy pink head. Mild acidic and spiced blackberry aroma. Flavour is quite acidic/citric with a nice berry fruity flavour. Lingering fruity and citric finish.

Sampled at O’Briens - RBSG ’08. Pours murky, cloudy dark red/cranberry with a light pink head. There’s a hint of Hawaiian Punch juice in the nose along with berries, of course. Fairly tart with notes of raspberry and blackberry - medium sourness (no brett/funk, really). There’s a little sweetness in there, but not too much. Pretty well-attenuated, medium/light body with moderate carbonation. Very drinkable. Solid stuff.

On tap at O’Brien’s. Pours a bright pinkish red, with creamy pink head and thick filmy lacing. Blackberry nose, vanilla, some slight tart notes. Tart cherries and blackberries in the flavor, heavy malt backbone, dry finish. Basic but good, nice and balanced, not too tart. Could pound a lot of these.

red body with a light red head.nice blend of blackberry,cherry and funk.very smooth and a bit light in the palate category.

Pours a dark red maroon, with a big, foamy, purple/pink head. Smells pretty fruity, grapes and plums really stand out. Some light acidity is noticeable as well. The flavor was tart, but wouldnt call it sour. Very much on the fruity side, with almost a vinuous wine-like consistency to it. Almost like a poor man’s Bon Chien 05, but not nearly as intense or well crafted. Not that great, but drinkable.

Tap @ O’Briens. Poured a hazed red with a light pink head. The aroma is of sweet and mildly tart raspberry. The flavor has just a hint of tartness. So much for the name. Also some wheaty notes with mild raspberry. Light bodied.

Looks like bubbly cranberry juice with a big, rock pink head. Sweet rasberry nose. Refreshingly sour taste. Lots of rasberry more than blackberry flavors with a sweet malt back. Approaches the taste of a rasberry cobbler, but without the sugar. At least it made it fun to try something differrent.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2009 On tap@ O’Brien’s: Deep purple color with a small creamy lavender head. Light sour berry aroma. Flavor starts tangy tart followed by a taste of blackberry and a light dry bitterness in the finish. Light body is watery with lively carbonation.

A dark red beer with fully covered pink tinted froth. Aroma of cherry cake frosting and candied pineapple and cherries. Flavors tended to be more fruity than sour to the point of being fairly candy-like, with pineapple and cherry dominating. Its nice though as its a clean fruity ale with an added bonus of having a fun sour background. It’s not fairly complex by any means and the body is on the thin side...but its a fun beer and even better, its rather spritzy.
