Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

Draft at Bierkraft’s ballast point tasting. So sour! This drinks more like a cocktail to me than a beer: fruity, light on carbonation and a pretty reddish color. In fact, after I made the mental adjustment to "cocktail" and not "beer" I enjoyed it more.

Appearance :

Draft at SB. Pours a murky and very dark purple, nearly black, with that pinkish purple foam on top, settling quickly. Big sweet nose, jammy, tons of berries, minimal lemony counterpoint. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Brilliant sweet crystal clear forward powerful jammy blackberry notes all over the mid palate, tart, just slightly puckery. Finish is just slightly puckery. Very, very nice beer.

Listed simply as Ballast Point Sour Wench. Draft pour pint at Special Brews. Was unsure on the variation, until the first sio, then it was obvious. Pours an almost purple color with a thin bubbly head. Sour red grape, and mixed berry aroma. Flavor closely matches. Sour wheat finish. A little on the strong side. I’m suprised. Does not have any different feel than the typical sub 5% berliner. Thick body, full flavor. Quite tasty.

Draft. Deep cranberry hue with a fluffy pink-speckled head. The aroma leads with sweet Marion blackberry, followed closely by wheat, lemon peel and lactic acid. Some peppercorns as well. The flavor’s very clean, with a snappy tartness that remains in balance with the fruit. The blackberries are a little subtle for me, though. Could use a boost in flavor, as it’s a little lifeless.

Had on tap at National in Calgary. Pours a bright purplish red with no head but for a few off white bubbles. The nose is tart, fruity, a bit sweet and rather mild with a pinch of acetic sourness. Light, refreshing and oh so easy drinking like juice almost. The finish is a bit tart with light sour notes. Very easy going!

Dark purple beer. It smell sweet with a few stone fruits. Taste like sour blackberry candy with a hint of lacto in the end.
