COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

UPDATED: JUL 10, 2012 Draft at rattle. Pours a deep hazy purple red body with thin pink lacing. Aroma is light fruits. Mouthfeel is light but finishes dry with light fruit tart notes. Nearly completely different beer on draft. Sour fruit comes through much more, especially in the nose. +0.7

Fruity aroma with some lactic sour. Taste is on the light side but full flavored. Bit of a barnyard funk in the finish, but may be some of the fermented berry flavors. Tart finish. Not sweet, fruit sugars seem to be mostly fermented out. Different for sure but a great Berliner like beer with fruit. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Ballast Point Tasting Room. Clear deep red/ruby color, almost no head. Malty caramel aroma, blackberries, lingon berries, sourish, caramel, some citrus. Sour blackberry flavor, caramel, strawberries, lingon berries, citrus, floral, tart, lots of berries. Good beer.

Draft at Bierkraft’s ballast point tasting. So sour! This drinks more like a cocktail to me than a beer: fruity, light on carbonation and a pretty reddish color. In fact, after I made the mental adjustment to "cocktail" and not "beer" I enjoyed it more.

Draft at Khyber Pass. Hazy dark orange pour with a foamy tan head. Some lacing at the start. Mild fruity sour. Thankfully not sweet. Tasting the full unfiltered blackberries - stems, seeds, the lot. Feels like a slightly toasted wheat beer in the background. Buttermilk biscuits with blackberry jam. Maybe a little black cherry in there as well. Bit watery. Not bad, but I have had way too many better sours.

Pours a slight red to brown with no head. Aroma of berry and maltiness but really a mess for whatever reason. Taste is just middle of the road in terms of fruit forward and sour. Some straw but nothing defining this beer from a cheap Bevmo contract brew "sour".

Draft at Bainbridge, pours a cranberry cloudy red with fizzy clearish head, aromas of really unique and weird funk, cheese, blackberry, ultra funky yeast. Taste is very funky, underripe bannana, berries, wheat, lots of sour yeasts and vinegar. Ok, but just way too out there for a sour.

Aroma of tart blackberry, stilton cheese, magic marker. Pours hazy purple with bubble film. Taste is clean with light blackberry, slight blue cheese and cellar funk. Very pleasant.

Red murky, no head, small murky bubbles. Aomra is malty, slightly sour, berries. Taste like sweet berry juice, raspberry, slightly tart, nut, wild berries, very refreshing, wheat, decarbonated sourness. Not too awesome but still enjoyable.
