Tap at the brewery. Pours clear dark brown with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light roast malt, earthy and spicy hops, woody hop notes and prunes. Flavor is lightly bitter dark malt and fruits, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Light body and medium carbonation.

Draft. Pours brown with a beige head. Chocolate malts, light sweetness, some faint spicy hoppy notes, and cocoa chocolate notes in the sweetness. Not a California Common, but not bad.

Tap at Gingerman. Dark brown pour with bitter chocolate nose. tastes of chocolate, grapefruit, touch of soy, hay, and bitter pine. maybe some vegetal on the palate.

"A pretty cool hybrid type beer. A hopped up schwarz that exhibits mainly characteristics of that sttyle...dry, roasty, caramel...but is hopped not quite like a black ipa, but starting to head in that direction. Nice, unique brew."

Draft. Lots of smoke and dark roasted grains in the aroma, long dry finish and a pretty hoppy taste. I think it’s the combo of the hops and burnt that gives you the long lingering bitter. Once it warms up some chocolate and coffee come forward but it’s still pretty mild.

Light black with a moderate tan swirl and edgework.
Nose is red berry fruit, dark malts, light pine, hint of tropical fruit.
Taste comprises roasty tones, pine bite, mineral pangs, bitter grapefruit, liqourice, light spice, hoppy tones.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close.
Decent CDA - yup CDA .... you don’t always have to hang off how the brewer markets it !!!

Draught at Ballast Point Old Grove, San Diego. All black beer with a very nice lasting beige head. Hoppy roasted aroma, wort, licorice, chocolate, some grapes. Hoppy roasted flavor, grassy, floral, dark chocolate, hay notes. A bit odd.

On tap at Capitol Beer &Tap Room. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a chocolate aroma. There is a chocolate and dark molasses flavor with a dry finish. Lots of flavor.

[Tap] Pours a very dark brown color. Pinecone and good amount of roasty malt in the aroma. Toffee, molasses, milk chocolate and citrus hops in the taste. Kinda odd with the yeast choice, but not too bad. Tasting notes from 2/2014.

Dark hazy brown, good head. Smells grainy... and even chemy. Tastes like chalky cocoa and malt with a medium body. Blah!
